I call doujinshi doujinshi

>> No.9145163

Wait, I always thought "doujin" means more or less "circle", as in to refer to a group or generally the creators.

So doujin soft would be software made by such a specific group, doujin music would be music made by such, and so on.

But is doujin actually a viable term to use in and of itself, without applying it to any word? Can "doujin" mean "doujin works" in general?

I thought it wasn't so. Wikipedia seems to claim otherwise, but it's wikipedia.

Anyone actually fluent and knowledgeable mind clarifying that bit for me?

doujin = group / person
doujinshi = the actual flimsy books they release

Calling a doujinshi a "doujin" is wrong. Just as wrong as calling animated porn "hentai".

>> No.9145188

>>9145173
but we call those doujins ; note the s at the end, which makes it only doujinshi because pluralizing a japanese word is fucking stupid.

You call them doujins because them is plural you stupid fuck. If it was one you would call it a doujin and that is wrong.

So what should I be calling my porno comix folder /jp/?

>> No.9145224

"doujins" is a contraction of "doujinshi".

Can we all be happy now?

>> No.9145228

I remember noticing this a while back. Not sure if it was a sudden or gradual change, but everyone was calling them "doujins" and I just assumed I was wrong.

It's kind of like when you're at a party (ha) and someone keeps pronouncing something wrong. Maybe you all know it. Maybe it's just you and you're wrong. So you let it continue.

We call them doujins because "doujin" is a loan word and we pluralize it using English rules.

But that's completely arbitrary.

Also, why does everyone call commercial eromanga "doujins"?

>> No.9145335

Also interested in this. When does it cease to be a doujin work? I know they don't have to be fan works, but are the official Touhou manga doujinshi?

In before "doujin" suffers the same fate "indie" did in the West.

If only it was just the same fate. Indie had a pretty good fate, at the very least it has never evolved to mean "porn".
