Some Post-Rock is like that though. Mass of the Fermenting Dregs and Tortoise are really energetic and fast-paced.

>> No.9164633

>>9164586

Mass of the Fermenting Dregs aren't "post rock". Post rock is generally something that isn't rock music but using sounds familiar to rock music.

MotFD are alternative rock, some shoegaze and post punk influence there. "RAT" could easily be a Boris track too.

Maybe you mistook post rock for post punk? Totally different genres.

Even the wiki article will give you an idea:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Post_rock

Post Rock is kind of like if Steve Reich tried to make an epic rock album. That's the best way I can describe it. It's a bit more about building up a soundscape, though using more traditional guitar sounds generally.

Mass of the Fermenting Dregs are an edgy rock band. I can't see how you would call them post rock. They don't have any songs to my knowledge that have that sort of thing going on and you're probably mistaking the softer shoegazey elements for post rock. Post Rock bands tend to use vocals more sparingly too.

I'm a music writer, so I'm a bit anal about these things. Genres can be bullshit though, one famous example they still joke about on /mu/ was calling Gorillaz - Plastic Beach "Post Dubstep".

And another thing: Post-Rock is almost always generally slower paced (6-10 min songs on average), and contains no vocals, or at least if it does, uses it as more as an instrument than lyrical delivery (e.g., Sigur Ros).

No, but you just did.
Post-punk is far from MotFD. Post-punk is stuff like The Cure, Bauhaus, Joy Division, etc etc.
Post-rock is MotFD, Mogwai, World's End Girlfriend, Mono, shit like that.

And since we're using wikipedia anyway

Look at what's under the "Genre" label.

Not OP, but as a general rule: Originals > Remasters

I'm a bit biased though, since i've noticed that when a song has multiple versions that differ slightly from each other, I almost always prefer the one i've been exposed to first, which is usually the original.

Look, that's just wrong. Maybe MotFD have some Post-Rock elements but do you have anything more to back up the idea that they fit in with acts like Explosions, Mogwai, Godspeed in the first place? I can't imagine what "Shit like That" would be like since aside from some breakdowns, Mogwai and MotFD sound nothing alike.

What you're describing is the proto-goth set of "Post Punk". Post Punk also means things like Gang of Four(harsher), the Chameleons(more poppy, studenty sounding), etc. Post Punk is essentially the bridge between Punk and more late 80s/90s styled Alternative Rock. it IS a genre broad enough where you'll hear two bands almost as different as Mogwai and MotFD.

MotFD aren't much more post rock than, for example, Opeth's Orchid.

Yeah, Wikipedia is totally the only thing saying they're post-rock.
Also, when you link to wikipedia first in an argument as proof, you're not really in any position to pull the "wikipedia isn't a legit source" card.

IFA Surfer is not post rock. The other track, yeah, that's pretty Mogwai sounding. But that's about as close as it gets.

MotfD is not "post rock". It's just another case of people misappropriating labels and it sticking.

Fuck, do you seriously believe this? Anyway, to know if something is representative of a genre or not, one just has to use their ears. The fact that you can't argue for yourself whether it's post-rock or not shows that you really don't know much about the genre.

This single band also isn't like a widely known subject like biology, where community-given general information would more or less be true since errors would be immediately obvious and pointed out. I suspect this is more of a "so-and-so supposedly reputable source said it's true so it must be so, even though i've never listened to a MotFD song before".

One time I decided to drop acid and do nothing but listen to shoegaze with headphones on.

It was probably the most relaxed trip I ever had. I barely moved and didn't have any of the mindfuck circular thoughts that plagued most of my psychedelic experiences.

Until about 7 hours into it and I was listening to 'Loveless' and my stereo started malfunctioning and switching from CD to Spanish Talk Radio. If you are familiar with (1) Spanish, (2) My Bloody Valentine, and/or (3) LSD, you can imagine the humor that I found in this.

I laughed and laughed until I literally started throwing up.
