I work as a network admin, latency is equal both ways. Think of it as you and him pulling a rope, if someone cuts the rope in the middle while you both are still pulling then you and him will both fall flat on your asses at the same time.

Don't worry about it, all it takes is to kill the process when that happens. It also crashes when I try to connect to someone and it doesn't work or if I choose to spectate but they're not playing yet, or when I cancel my host. Just some issue in the way Wine handles the networking.

I've no idea. I actually hate the card, it's got such a stupidly long startup, everyone's bound to see it coming from miles away. The only way to properly set it up is if the planets align, you get the Moonson weather and hit your opponent with a d.6C on the corner of the screen, AND you happen to have the card in hand.
