Imagine you are in Napoleon's boots.

What would you do to ensure victory in the battle of Waterloo /jp/?

I wouldn't be able to start considering this, or any kind of military maneuver.
At least half of those infantrymen would have to die. I would be ordering them to go and die. No, I would be ordering to go and die while killing as many enemies as possible.
How did generals cope with that shit?

It's not about the soldier's morale. It's about the general's morals.
When you order a batallion to advance, you are basically telling a bunch of angry men to go die.
You have to be a tough son of a bitch to do that a few dozen times in a day.

And what about the English on the right flank?
They'd turn on your ass and you would be squashed between two armies.
The only way a plan like yours would work is if the English were completely frozen in place with nothing but toy guns.

I would have given command of the detachment sent after the Prussians to Marshal Davout rather than Grouchy. Davout would have been smart enough to rejoin the main body at Waterloo while preventing the Prussians from reinforcing Wellington, and Napoleon would have won.

Pretty much what this anon said. No matter how much I look at it, this battle set is absolutely awful for Blue.

You could try by weakening the enemy with the artillery, but the enemy has artillery to and has the higher ground, which means any attack he will make will be a lot more effective.

Overal I say it was pretty stupid to reach this position and going an a direct confrontation at this unfavorable odds.

The left flank seems to be the only weak and feasible way to push an assault, but it's already to late. Napoleon should have just retreated his main force from a position where they are just sitting ducks.

Pull back the right flank, maintain a front against a Prussian advance. Send a large wave of cavalry to bust through the Dutch and isolate them, circling around Merbraine to block off the cavalry group and menace that artillery formation. Have a second wave of cavalry bust the now mispositioned Dutch and continue crossways to attack Clinton's artillery group, while Reille advances forward towards them. Have the centre group along with the Imperial Guard advance as depicted, and break through and assist the cavalry. Have the right flank assemble along that centre road and cover the centre's advance from Picton's group and the Prussians.

How did I do?

The only way to win this in a Total War game would be to camphill and put your units on different heights so that you can have multiple units firing at the same time.
Also, it would neutralize the charge power of the cavalry.

Another way would be to put two units on the left flank to reinforce it, and use 3-4 units to gain advantage on the right flank, then win by surrounding the over units.

>> No.9090974

>>9090960
that's if you go defensive all the time

I often do battle setups that force me to attack, like giving myself no artillery etc

Also, Maratha Confederacy master race

>> No.9091001

>>9090974
My second solution would be the offensive one since it actually involve advancing and flanking.
Now, it's quite hard to go offensive against a superior force. Unless their weapons, training and moral is worse than yours, all your attempt at moving forward will be countered.
Not to mention that the enemy has a lot of cavalry, and you don't.

>> No.9091011

I never really got into the Total War games. Sure, it's how it played in history, but something about massed formations of dead men walking just didn't click with me, when I've always enjoyed fragmenting my units here there and everywhere...
