That's bullshit. Using a photo as ref is no different than using an actual model as reference.

No way. If you trace something you straight up trace it. No talent needed at all.

If you reference something, you recreate it from what you visually perceive. Artists look at models all the time, and that's straight up referencing.

You're not competent yet.

It's not "for anyone who picked up a pencil", it's for anyone who is already good enough to draw the things he sees.

The technical skill required in drawing from life/photo reference is the most basic and automatic part of getting to be a good artist, decent artists don't literally trace because they don't have to. Doesn't mean it doesn't take years to do it, but there are still ton of people that can do that.

The only people who throw around the accusations of tracing(instead of copying something you don't have a permission to which is the real ethical problem here) are people who have no understanding of art.

I mean, fuck, Norman Rockwell used photos to pretty same degree this picture does in his paintings.

The difference? He staged and took his own reference photos.

Also, judging by how well he drew the hair and clothes, he's clearly skilled enough that he doesn't need to trace.

The pillows aren't exactly the same. It might be hard to tell, but look at the folds, for example.

Anyway, the point is that at his skill level whether he traced or not is pretty much irrelevant anyway, since the final result would be about the same. The only complaint you could have here is the lack of originality, since he pretty much just copied an already existing work.

Why can't you guys accept that some people are actually quite good at drawing and don't need to trace?
