No they arent, in Japan Mahjong is a predomently male oriented sport. Women play, but they are in the minorities (like the WNBA).

Yes, I called it a sport. And your family is not an accurate representation of Japan's mahjong playerbase no matter how important you think you are.

>> No.90203

why are there tiles missing from the dead wall?

>> No.90207

mahjong will always be second to pachinko in terms of gambling popularity, though

>> No.90209

In 1998, in the interest of changing mahjong from an illegal gambling game to an approved 'healthy sport', the China State Sports Commission published a new set of rules, now generally referred to as Chinese Official rules or International Tournament rules. The principles of the new, ‘healthy’ mahjong are: no gambling – no drinking – no smoking. In international tournaments, players are often grouped in teams to emphasize that mahjong from now on is considered a sport.

>> No.90213

Mahjong is played by all age groups and sexes with perhaps the exception of kids under 16.

It's played by:
Teens
Men from their 30s-50s
Women from their mid 40s onwards

>> No.90221

>>90203

It's not, alot of people do this now days where the last replacement tile in the deadwall is moved to the left. See how there are still 4 replacement tiles? I have no idea why they do this though, but all the professional matches I see they do this.

;_; back then in China my parents never allowed me to play Mahjong because they considered as a 'criminal's game', only played by Triad-members and mafiosi-wannabes, and poor bastards who have to pay back their depts to them - and lost more than only their money afterwards...
But actually mahjong is a very fine game - a bit too addictive perhaps, but by all means better than poker!

real mens play mahjong - faggot-cowboys play poker

>> No.90330

First game of mahjong I saw was in that Jackie Chan movie with the drunken boxing.

>> No.91191

In China, Hong-Kong and Singapore, it's also played by diplomats' wives, both native and foreign. Bridge too.

I thought those 4 WERE the replacement tiles to draw from when you form a kan. When you flip a dora, it's flipped on the tile in the other direction. And with that number 4, upon a 4th declaring a 4th kan, the round ends in a draw, so....
