Maybe the mother breastfed them for too long, or not long enough.

I wouldn't say it's pseudoscience, it's just these things are hard to quantify. We can obviously say being depressed is abnormal and needs treatment (as many doctors have for millennia), but where do we draw the line? These problems come up a lot, and I'm surprised they even manage to publish books.

Not to mention a lot of them rely on social norms. People go to parties and sit on their phones all evening. It's possible that within a few generations being a hikikomori will be completely fine, and disorders like "social anxiety disorder" are just a normal part of functioning. Maybe "social extraversion" will be a disorder a century from now.

It's just dumb, and I stand by the idea that if it doesn't severely impair your everyday functioning or inhibit your ability to do something, it's not a disorder. This is usually one of the criteria, but people are happy to say, "Oh you downloaded CP pictures and fapped to them last week. Guess you have DSM-recognized pedophilia!"
