Nah, it's easy to become a Mahjong professional, even if you picked up the game as an adult. It's like poker.

Go on the other hand ... it is impossible to become a world class Go professional unless you've formally studied and played the game every day since you were a child.

Pic related, "world class" mahjong players will never be as admired and respected as these men.

I don't think so. Many websites in the SEA region (albeit my first hand experience with this only comes from South Korea) uses a form of script that for some reason only works on IE. That's what I've been told when I ran into this issue on various websites over there, so sorry for the high level of abstraction.

I like the currency system in JRM. You might have a goal for yourself like "get to 1800 rating" and who knows, that might take a couple hundred games to accomplish. But the currency lets you have a goal on a smaller scale to save up enough to buy whatever item you want. I'll get angry or happy over winning or losing money in a single game, wheras it takes a lot of games to have any meaningful impact on rating. Plus it's pretty for free, wheras you need to pay for the nice tenhou client. I think it's worth signing up for for those superficial reasons.
