OP, try Keio Flying Squadron. The first game is a kind of parodius like shmup, the second game is a platformer. Both games have extremely high WTF factor. (the main antagonist is a 4000 year old Raccoon with an IQ of 1400, a fetish for cats, and Greenpeace membership)

Both games are set in Keio period japan, and the japanese versions use kanji even for numbers. There's a third game, a board game for the playstation, but it was never localized.

While on the Saturn, you may also check the Sakura Taisen games, or Cotton 2 and Cotton Boomerang. And any of the Parodius games.

Puyo Puyo Sun was the pinnacle of the series.

I still don't understand how they play it at so high level. Anything beyond basic 3-4 hit combos are beyond me.

Madou Monogatari for Sega Saturn is also pretty cool. One of my favorite RPGs on the system. Too bad they changed Dracos outfit.

Waku Waku Puyo Puyo Dungeon is also OK, but can be impossible to play if you don't know wtf you are doing.

Seriously that's all you need to know. Instead of dropping that forth puyo there, add three of a different colour on top, then one of the original. Now when the top layer pops the last puyo for the original will drop into place. Rinse and repeat across the whole screen for easy 10+ chains, in endless mode at least. You'll need some tactics to keep your opponent in check in two player modes.

Learning pattens only serves to keep your screen manageable. The fundamental concept of offsetting always applies.
