Revival thread #6
(partially) Copied from the last OP:

about GoS
/jp/ has discussed this game before, a rather long, difficult touhou rpg, translated. Awhile ago it received some updates that greatly improved stability and performance, the game was rather crashy with the English patch before these patches, so it's worth updating.

The whole game prepatched with the translation and game manual (5 parts)
http://www.mediafire.com/?a8c1by6btaid7

If you already have the game it's most likely at version 2.06. You can get the 2.07 and 2.08 patches here: http://www.gensoukyou.org/bose02/game02/update.html
and the 2.09 patch here http://www.gensoukyou.org/bose02/update.html
After updating to 2.09 the game task bar will still read 2.08 for some reason.
The english files to copy over for 2.09 http://www.mediafire.com/?hwfe9kaur3d08c3
If you updated your game you'll need to run the exe in your save folder to convert your saved games to work with the new engine.

Oh sweet, another thread
just stopping by to say that learning Raise Dead is a bitch.

>> No.8911967

A while back in the first series of threads I read something like "The main game is around 100 hours".
I remember I didn't really believe that. I thought that was an exaggeration, or maybe it was "100 hours to 100% the whole game".
Now I'm up to Stage 18 with 70+ hours of playtime, and I don't know where the hell those hours went.
After this, I can safely say videogame companies have no excuse to make boring games. Compared to this doujin game, the battle systems for most high-profile RPGs are plain pieces of shit.
"So we have ten million dollars for this project? Well, of course the only useful aspects of the battle system will be Attack/Skill! We won't even need to put a Defend command because bosses will barely scratch the characters, and the equipment will consist of one stat for attack and one for defense! Quickly, we have to market this as the ultimate game!"

you can take quite some liberties, as long as you keep in mind that:
-the first party gets both enemies with both physical&magical weaknesses,
-the second party deals with low def enemies, but highly dangerous status effects (pic related, bring Sanae)
-and the third party has enemies with weaknesses to magic.

If you don't feel confident about all this, you could play it safe and clear one path at a time. I for one juked like there was no tomorrow

Beginner here, I've just downloaded it.

Akyu has told me that I can recruit Byakuren at the Shrine, and I heard that waiting at the shrine for an hour triggers the event. However, I've been waiting for over an our at the shrine and it's not happening.

Any reason for this to happen? Even though Byakuren's not a favorite of mine, I'd feel kinda weird if I started without all available characters recruited.

Thanks in advance.

So I tried a bit of RNG "manipulating". That's not very nice and easy, but I DID get something out of it. Even if it was only steel. 15monster-groups in the room = 15steel. (pic) Not too bad. aside from the foreign gods, there are pretty much no particularly resilient enemies in there. Every battle is like a quick draw. Even Sanae can't help you with the sheer barrage of permanent&quick effects (what kind of Time Stop deals damage...?). Reimu can, but only for one round. You decide what's best. I had the best results using Sonic Stream and blasting everything with the area magic+chaser combo.

No. This game has TONS of material grinding as well as "secondary party leveling". To have all your touhous leveled up, you basically have to go through all dungeons twice. And then the drops..
It's not exaggerated that most of this game IS grinding in a way. It's just not the "I can't beat the boss, I need to level up now" grind. Although that will happen if you actually think, you don't have to level all of your party. You can cheeseball dungeons, but NOT bosses after all.

This doesn't make the game bad, but.. there is grinding. Definitely.

I was generally exaggerating, those 190 hours come from many idle activities. Whether those are necessary to beat the main storyline bosses and all, I can't say for sure, but who wouldn't want his 2hus wearing luxurious items? Who doesn#t want a crazy good Satori? Tose are the things which mean <1%-5% chances that require some grinding.

And of course the infamous final boss. Pretty much everyone arrives with level 50 and gets his face smashed regularly until about 20 levels later when the touhous CAN survive a Stone Shower or something like that.

Anyway, pic related, my Satori swag so far.

The most grindy part about this game is equipment. Getting equipment from the mini-bosses in stage 21 takes so long, even if you reset everytime you run into the wrong monster or don't get a drop. Though one might argue that you don't really need all that equipment anyway.

>> No.8916504

>>8916384
>To have all your touhous leveled up, you basically have to go through all dungeons twice.
Not really, all you need is to abuse the commander slot and change your party often (at least one party for each dungeon is ideal, but switching some members during one is also a good idea, especially if you run out of MP). I did that on my most recent playthrough and I actually got a bit overleveled (then again, that might have been because I grinded some equipment).
Anyway, about those level 1 characters, getting them up to a decent level doesn't need any grinding either, simply because of the commander slot. Just stick whoever you got in there for the next dungeon and they will come out of it ready to kill and survive stuff. Also, even though after stage 2 you get three characters, they can and will do pretty well in stage 3 even if you don't abuse the commander slot, so there's no reason to whine about that either.

Until you get to the post game, which I haven't gotten in to much and thus can't vouch for, or if you want an early Kusanagi, DO NOT grind for materials, even with the drop patch. It is much, much, MUCH more trouble than it's worth.

Even if you kill all but one monster to see if something drops, then run away if nothing does and re-encounter the same mob? That's how I farmed for materials anyway. It was way easier and faster than running from mob to mob, then having to reset the dungeon after you killed everything.

>> No.8917578

>>8917566
No, not even like that. It just isn't worth it, at least in my opinion.
Just killing most everything in your way while going through the dungeon, combined with the stuff you get from chests and smart shopping, should cover your equipment needs. Assuming you're using the drop patch. You should.

>> No.8917650

Throughout my run of the game, I was consistently underleveled enough that I got bonus experience everytime I moved to a new stage.

I always made my party consist of the lowest level characters I had frequently even if it meant a slightly unsafe party.

I also juked monsters like hell. Out of all the monsters running around I'd say I'd juked and ran away from more than half of them. I also picked up every single chest.

I crafted weapons frequently, but never farmed for materials. This was also before the drop rate patch.

The very first time I had to grind was at the final boss. By the time I beat Lithos I was only levels 49-53 I believe.

I did not material farm for iron to grind out Kusanagi either and simply used Youmu's Doujigiri. I did no targetted farming of enemies in the final stage when I did my first grinding so I did not have any of the mini boss drops either, but I did have nearly all the regular enemy drops except for high ribbon and the plasma knife.

Upon my first serious attempt of the final boss and defeat of the first phase of it I cleared it in one try the second and third phase.

I wonder why people easily give up when there's a particular strategy for a boss to defeat it easily. Every boss main game seems to have a fairly simple one.

>> No.8917678

>>8917452

Something similar almost happened to me just seconds ago. I decided to run away on turn 1 because I wanted to encounter more of the mobs that I was trying to learn a skill from, so I could learn it quicker. So I hit run, then a single mind flayer cast mind blast and Satori learned it, at which point I was like "God fucking damnit". But EVERYONE got paralyzed, so I couldn't run. Talk about a lucky break.

Ugh...
Don't worry about dodging. Expelee's Canan or whatever has the worst accuracy in the game. If you aren't frozen, it will miss, and Reimu's circle will block that. Alice can tank Momiji's attacks; give her and any party members she keeps killing slash-resistant items. She can also block Cirno's ice attacks with spectrum mystery, but I remember Momiji doing a lot more damage than Cirno.
Bring Marisa along, give her all her fire skills, drop enough points in her laser tree to give her spells giant/warrior/magician slayer, and give her the staff or purgatory and heatwave amulet (with a frost-resist ring of course)
if you have them. She'll burn Cirno down pretty quick, I think. Nitori is also pretty good if she's got a decent gun. She can also use earth bullets and gun skills to help kill Momiji when Cirno dies.
Momiji's weak to earth, but I don't remember if Patchy is good for that fight or not. If you're taking to much damage, bring Sanae to buff you up, otherwise bring Patchy for her earth and fire skills. I don't know if you'll have her single target earth/fire spells by that point, but if you do...use them. Bring her fire land boost too.
Oh, and use a tight enough formation that Reimu can heal your whole party with 25 points in her healing tree. Poison shield and freefight are good for that, but skydance would probably work too.

after switching out sakuya to Sanae, and sanae's last word ready at the end of round 1....

the fight was a goddamn joke. Nitori's blast crits cirno for 4.5k, Marisa's fire shit did the other half over the two rounds total cirno managed to live. Then youmu's 5 hit attack hits Momo for 800 each hit, critting for 2100 a few times. Sanae's attack up helped, too.

So, while trying to get those physical-resistance acc. drops from those slimes and elephants in stage18/19, I actually got some RNG-abuse going again. This time however with some FAR more useful things.

-Rusty Blades. The room only has 3 monsters though, and I really hope I haven't forgotten how that one works..
-Silver Trays
-fucking Trapezohedron

The last two both after the room with the healing circle at the very beginning of stage19. 15monstergroups there. I also got "steel" going there earlier. No for letting everything respawn.
The only question is, how many of each do I actually need. I doubt there is actually a faster/better way to obtain stuff, even though respawning is annoying. (But I can't just "wait". Any level up could possible mean the attack-sequences don't work anymore..)
Well, anyway, what I currently have (see pic) can't be taken from me and I'm fucking glad.

I think I found a bug.

>> No.8922568

Do you guys think these two teams are balanced? To prepare myself for the Entei party split I'm trying to get a feel for how I can equally distribute my party members.

Party1:
Mokou
Nitori
Youmu
Sanae
Marisa
Aya (Commander)

Party2:
Alice
Reimu
Patchy
Sakuya
Satori
Byakuren (commander)

That's about as balanced as I can think of right now. Anyone have any different opinions on how I could make this more balanced?

-TLDR WARNING-
Here is my rationale for these group compositions.

For group 1, I chose to pair up Mokou with Sanae using Hinotori Skydance formation. Since Mokou can't draw aggro or protect anyone like Alice can, and can only rely on the Hinotori Skydance aggro, I think Sanae should be able to sufficiently back her up in that role on top of giving this party the necessary extra healing potential. Since the monsters are bound to attack whoever they feel like more often, I feel that having her party wide EVA, DEF, and RES buffs will be essential for surviving some battles. Regarding my other choices for DPS, I guestimated that Nitori, Youmu, and Marisa, are roughly as powerful of a DPS combination as Satori, Sakuya, and Patchy. I'm not as confident about their synergy with each other though.

For group 2 I chose Alice to be with Reimu simply because Alice does a good job at preventing damage altogether, so it's much easier for Reimu to keep everyone alive with her sub-par healing. My rationale for picking the DPS members is pretty much the same as it was for group 1. Again I'm not sure if their synergy with each other is necessarily the greatest though.

this early in the game, fights generally shouldn't last longer than 3 rounds or so.

Make sanae go dps build. I would also recommend getting her python, as the on-hit paralyze helps so much for random encounters, as well as the 20 pt. bonus in it makes your 15 mana snake generally give back more mana than it costs to cast if it can hit 3 guys (and it has a very wide range, so if there are 3 enemies on the field it will most likely hit them all).

For bosses, yes, a balanced party with somebody spec'd for sustain is optimal, but for the randoms, blitzkrieg tactics with a defense formation has always worked best, for me anyway.

Oh, and whenever you switch parties in entei, be sure to switch to he correct formation. The attack up stuff doesn't really help your mages up, and likewise the magic formations for your bruiser squad.

Landed control on it after stalling forever, went to use Elixir on Satori, and promptly found out it does not have Elixir on its control menu, only a plethora of breath attacks and Cosmic Liner (Which I did learn, so not all was lost.)

That having been said, the Wiki outright states this as a way to get Elixir. I’d rather not have to land a lucky control/charm on something while it’s planning to cast Elixir and then have it randomly land on Satori. Sounds like a pain in the ass to do it that way. The drop/learn patch doesn't change drop rates for equipment, you know. It only changes the rates for the basic materials, such as iron, bamboo, steel, gold and so on.
Those slimes drop that item at a 2% chance, by the way, so good luck and don't give up. Also, they're not that rare on some rooms of the rightmost path in stage 18.
>>8927499
Because why not? Everyone knows that the chance to get iron and so on is kind of horrible, and you need tons of it, so why not save some time and enjoy the game a bit better? Same thing for Satori, the only thing you're doing by using the patch is saving time.

Oh, that's good to know. Still the over 150slimes I killed.. well, again, I did get that rare-drop, but... geez. Hopefully it didn't mess up anything and I would've gotten the accessory without the drop-rate patch.

>>8927499

The patch makes things somewhat reasonable. You still don't get a whole lot and still have to farm. The time you have to invest is simply more reasonable than before. I'm talking about balancing here. If the droprate would guarantee drops after x killed enemies, then I would mind such low chances a lot less.

For example dynamic chances. For a 1% chance, it starts way below 1% and gets gradually up for every kill. The formula is made in such a way, that you get an average of 1% drops.

Sadly many developers don't use such systems, which work WAY better than the "normal" one, given the not exactly randomness of RNGs. Actually this game falls flat on its face with its RNG. It uses the same seed whenever the game is started. So you will ALWAYS have the same sequence of random numbers in it. Shitty programming, you don't do this. So if you start the game, encounter the first monster, get a drop and you remember the exact sequence of orders you gave, you can repeat that and get unlimited drops that way. Aside of that it's also very annoying, because, again, it's simply NOT random. You have patterns. Let's say I only fight encounters with slimes and always kill them the same way. If I don't get a drop within 20encounters I reset. That's NOT working. That way I will NEVER get a drop. And that's just shit.

>> No.8930327

>>8930140
Just remember that some of the first encounters in some dungeons are set - for example, the first thing you find in the Sea of Clouds will ALWAYS be three Bentoras, the first encounter in Garden of the Sun will always be two Sunflowers, and so on. No idea if you have really found out all this about the RNG or if you're basing things on encounters, so I thought I should say this just to be safe.

As for dynamic chances, I'm pretty sure I've never seen that in a game, but it does sound better than infinite dice rolls until you've rolled so many times that it's harder to not get a drop than to get it. Seriously, around 90 Gelatinous Matters for a 5% Makai Ring...? Luck is kind of a bitch. I doubt many game designers would care about it, though.

>> No.8930443

>>8930327

Blizzard used that kind of chances for warcraft3. Of course, it's not about drop-chances, but for all those chance-things. (critical hits, attack-triggers.. yeah)
That also means that dota2 also uses the same system. A quote:
>For example, Daedalus has a 25% probability to critical strike for 2.5x damage. On the first attack, however, it will only have an ~8.5% probability to crit. Each subsequent attack without a crit increases this probability by 8.5%. So on the second attack, the chance is 17%, on the third it is 25.5%, etc. After a crit procs, the probability resets to 8.5% on the next attack. These probabilities average out so that, over a moderate period of time, Daedalus will crit very nearly 25% of the time.

I know it's rare, but I don't understand why. Yes, you have to remember how many "misses" you had for an item, but really, the system works a lot better.

As for the RNG, no I meant it like I said it. Close the game in a dungeon in a healing-circle room. Start and remember exactly what you do. The damage-numbers, things triggering and so on. Close the game and do the exact sequence again. Everything will happen just like it happened the last time. Including a drop, if you got one. And that makes it so shitty, if you just want to farm one type of enemy, escape every other encounter and always handle encounters exactly the same way. (Which most do..)

So, tried a bit more to get that -75% strike damage cushion.
The first two attempts failed, even though I actually waited for Byakuren to get her Last Word going. (both 170% ones) The first encounter even had two slimes.

Then came the third. Get rid of the other enemy, and paralyze-attack the enemy with Byakuren's dagger. While it's paralyzed, Patchy and Alice beat up Byakuren into red HP. And then I tried to get her Last Word going. Nope.
After the slime's MP were empty, I used auto-attack. Suddenly it didn't care anymore about the paralyze dagger. Dozens of turns. And no Last Word. When Patchy got killed I had enough and just killed it. Well, pic related...

I kind of have the feeling, the game has a long shitty RNG-sequence in it, somewhere near the beginning after you start the game. The paralyze-effect not working at all for such a LONG time is just weird. Those slimes can be easily paralyzed.. normally that is. Although the dagger isn't too good. Aya's stun blow tends to work way better for me.

So, to get back to my question, how many Super Slimes I still had to beat up: 4.

GoS has a lot of fake-difficulty. Some sort of lowering wouldn't be bad. I'm especially talking about the bosses.
Many of them have some kind of cheap tricks. Basically what you need to do is fight them over and over again and die whenever they do something nasty, re-arrange your equipment, and try again. That's not difficulty. A difficult battle should be very well winnable with all the information the player has. The first time.

Maybe some hint-signs should be placed in the stages which tell you about some nasty attacks of the boss, their weakness, or whatever else.
Or simply make the battles "easier" in taking the cheapness out of them. Because most boss-fights aren't hard at all, if you KNOW what the boss can do. There are a few exceptions and I love them. But they are rare.

As for random-encounters.. my biggest problem with them is that they take too long. At least halving the HP would be nice. Maybe, in exchange, adding some offensive powers or something like that... but yeah. Enemies have too much hp. (And ironically some bosses not enough..)
Alternatively making enemies weaknesses hurt them more would be possible as well. I'm thinking "SMT"-like. In most cases in GoS it's just ~150% damage you deal, which feels a bit underwhelming.

Although I hope it's some rebalancing like that, and it could be called "easier", I kind of doubt it. Well, not like you have to play the easier version. Although I can see a possibly adjusted droprate might be nice to have instead of our "patch".

They do. They give you hints when you die.
They gave you a save point before boss fight.
How easy do you want the game to be?
GoS is probably the best RPG that I have play in years gameplay wise. Rest of the commercial RPG series outside of SMT is just press X to win.

Something as easy as DoD.

Super high drop rates.
Enemies have low hp.
Bosses have low hp.
You don't lose item drops when you die in a dungeon anymore.
You can run from battles 100% of the time.

I'm sure lots of those changes will make it to GoS. I'll just take a guess and say they increase Satori's learning rate a lot too. If people still have problems with a boss they will patch it just like they did with the final boss for DoD.

Wow, hints of you die. That's what I said. You have to do some trial and error and that's NOT difficulty.
It's fine to get surprised by some nastiness, but in GoS you can't react. If your main-attacker is suddenly blind, you might as well restart. Or if the boss opens up instantly killing half your party. Those things happen with bossfights and are EASILY avoided if you KNOW about it.
It would be better if the nastyness is actually nasty but can be survived and adapted to.
Some bosses, even with complete knowledge about them, are still pretty tough. And those are the best bossfights in GoS. Not the "you die 2-3times and then the boss isn't worth being called a boss anymore" ones.

I really think there is enough in GoS to improve. Escaping is actually another example. I'd simply use those currently unimportant lives for that. Enemies could have a fleeing-cost of x lives you have to pay to run away. The total cost will be evenly subtracted from all currently living party-members. (So a one-girl group might be able to run away from a five-enemy group once, but then she's out of lives and that's that)
Running away would then never fail as long as you have the needed lives and otherwise be completely impossible.
Lives could also be used to "surprise" the enemy or cancel an enemy-ambush. It would cost the same as escaping and would add a strategic element. (And take away bad luck game-overs)
Surprising an enemy would be decided on the map and only work on "normal" monster-sprites on the map. No "whoops I encountered something nasty, gimme a free turn". There you'd need to run away.

>> No.8937162

>>8936981
How else do you expect a RPG to be difficult if you're not dying? They're turn-based, there's no way they can just expect you to improve your skills during a boss fight. You're supposed to be well-geared, well-leveled and have a decent strategy (even if it means just bruteforcing the boss). That's just how (good) RPGs are: if you are not prepared (and you most likely will never be on the first time you fight a boss), you WILL die. Then, you rearrange your party, revise your strategy and try again. Even in the final dungeon with all of its bullshit enemies, if you have a decent party, decent gear and know what you are doing, you can survive even those minibosses (and if you can't, they have a 90% escape rate, so you shouldn't have too much trouble).
Or do you mean that it's a hard game because enemies use random attacks? Like they do in pretty much every turn-based RPG? Yeah, the RNG is always a bitch, but that is true for every video game. Actually, even in GoS bosses follow a pattern (with random skills for each turn, obviously), so don't complain about that.

Anyway, I'm.. curious about this easy mode GoS they're releasing. Can't say I'm really looking forward to it because I also found GoS to be my absolute favorite RPG, even with all of its difficulty, but I'm willing to give it a try to see how much will change.
I wonder if it's going to be released this upcoming Reitaisai as well.

I don't know when I should start using the character specific mats that i'm getting from chests (fuck farming for them, they may as well not exist outside from chests). I recall that if you tried to make every tier of everyones weapon, every time they became available, then you would run out of character specific mats very quickly and not have any left for end-game weapons and armor. Not that it's even possible to make every tier anyway. I made one Marisa's early tier brooms because, well, its Marisa and she needs her brooms. I also made a katana for Youmu because her starter sword is shit and she's obviously useless without a good katana, and lastly I made some Youmu-only armor for her. They both gave +crit rate so I figured they'd be good for awhile. But that's it, I've only made three character specific items total so far because I'm afraid of not having enough mats left over for higher end weapons later in the game. What are the best weapons to make that'll last a good while? I just beat Reisen and Tewi, so I'm about to get started on stage 10, and that's where I'm at right now.

They pulled in the people that wanted the game easier and now they want back the people that said the game was too easy. I just don't think it's as easy as they make it sound to balance the game for those two types of people. Unless they add difficulty levels again like they did with some older games. both wrong. At least for most of the main game. I gave Marisa good wands and it was all cool. Youmu can wear Swords, Axes, Lances, ergo everything a fighter needs. She's the same as Mokou in that regard.

Most bosses at your level range are best done with magic, and for that you don't need those weapons. I made lots of shitty weapons (every goddamn inaccurate Sakuya sword) and now need to grind up on Hinotori Wings etc.

The one that gets recommended a lot is Youmu 6th tier, the one with Foreign God slayer: for a very good reason. Pic related is the reason. If you like though you can also make Gungnir or Kusanagi for that occasion.

You don't need any. Marisa can use staffs just fine and Youmu can use swords, axes.. whatever you want.

What would you do, if an enemy boss doesn't care about slash, but is weak to strike? Your katana suddenly became much less effective.
If you want something, you can of course get it, but it's absolutely fine to wait until the last dungeon, before you get anything. (Basically the "best" tier you can reasonably make in the main-game)

Given the place you are.. did you get the death-axe? The first is called "Golden Mattock" and dropped by "#75 Momentus" going by the wiki. If you didn't get it.. get it. And give it Aya. Give her the cheap 5mp pierce skill, stun blow, blind beak, as well as the 7mp, 1bomb hit-all skills. Add to that your two best IND+ accessories as well as some good ACC+.
This will work up to the final dungeon. In there it quickly becomes less and less useful. But that's a LONG time till then and it's very effective in random encounters. You don't know how damn many enemies are actually relatively easily instant killed. And if they aren't, paralyze or blind will usually be devastating for them.
Take the next stage you are visiting. HIGH HP skeleton being annoying? Well, I laughed when Aya first-hit killed the first three I've seen in the stage.
Or those Hein later on people have problems with? You won't understand that with a death-Aya... until you fight one without her. Oh my god.

adding to that guy, if you like using instant death, use Sakuya's Killer World to increase effectiveness. Beware of enemies who use instant death, though. For obvious reasons.
Satori's Wail and Youmu's Dance of Shadows (katana passive) also inflict instant death. Buff them up with Byakuren and reap their souls.

http://en.touhouwiki.net/wiki/The_Genius_of_Sappheiros/Equipment/Weapons
http://en.touhouwiki.net/wiki/The_Genius_of_Sappheiros/Equipment/Armor
Use those as a reference to plan which pieces of equipment you want to make. The best things to craft are some of Sakuya's two-handed swords, Marisa's brooms (only one of them is enough, but you get a lot of shrooms so why not upgrade it every now and then), Reimu's gohei for the extra light damage, some of Nitori's guns (especially the one with Transcendent slayer), Byakuren's IND scroll, and some katanas for Youmu. Mokou's One-Shot Punch is amazing too.
As for armor, you can go most of the game without caring about those. The only notably good armors are Sanae's Dartfrog Clothes; Sakuya's, Patchouli's, Nitori's and Youmu's Youkai Mt. Rock armors; and the Meteorite amors for Satori and Byakuren. All of the third tier and above armors are way too expensive to make and they're often worse than the second tier ones, so making them is a waste of time. You could make the elemental armors as well if you want something generic with a nice defense value and elemental resistance too, if you want to spend a bit of steel.
You get 10 of each character-specific material if you find every chest, by the way.
>>8943950
Getting any of Marisa's brooms and 20 power points gives you a neat 6 MP/turn regen, which means you will never run out of that even if you spam her strongest spells. Also, Blazing Star is a pretty good physical move for a character with such awful STR (and it recovers a ton of MP), so you might want to use it against enemies weak to pierce. Also, bamboos seem to be the easiest material to get even without the patch, so making them is not too hard.
Youmu's katana growth tree is simply way too good to pass up on the opportunity to use it, unless you're seriously in need of iron.

>> No.8944061

You aren't using Aya like that. She doesn't need any help. My setup more or less gives her an about 75% chance to instantly kill whatever doesn't resist it. This is just a guess. But a few examples:

A 4 "weapon-enemy" encounter could get completely wiped with one hit-all skill. Cheap and effective. This was in stage17 for example.
Hein usually died the first hit. The luckiest survived for 3hits.
Out of 5 Elite Mind Flayer, she killed 3.
Out of 10 mini mind flayer (stage17) she killed 9.

There are quite a few enemies who easily die to her. If you don't try to focus on instant killing, it's not "there are a lot of enemies resisting instant death", it's "a lot of enemies simply die to instant death".

There is no need to amplify this, it's simply damn useful on its own, and otherwise you use blind/stun. The good thing is, those skill can also instantly kill. So even if you use blind beak, the enemy can be killed.. or at least blinded.

The rest of the party is supposed to attack and kill whatever doesn't simply die because of Aya. That's why it's no problem that there are enemies highly resistant or immune to death.
I only have problems with her in stage20 now. Before she could either kill most enemies or at least disable them with a very high chance. Stage20.. well. Maybe her unbuffed IND isn't high enough anymore.

Really, a death-Aya could be considered broken.

I am so confused on how I should be using Byakuren. Her buffs are only marginally better than Sanae's, but are just single target, and costs a lot of mana. Her debuffs are only marginally better than Satori's, but again, are just single target. And lastly her offensive spells are just underwhelming, single target, and limited to only holy/dark elements. Yeah, she's great for some boss fights, but what about random encounters? I just can't figure out what she should be doing besides using her starter holy/dark nukes, which are like her only mana efficient spells.

He buffs are better when you wanna boost a specific character's role in a given fight. If you're relying on one person to do most of the damage, you get more mileage buffing that character than you do with Sanae, who might spend more MP buffing characters who won't even use the boost.

The nature of her single target spells does kind of make her the Youmu of mages - she has an answer to almost every source of damage in the game, meaning you can spec her to shut down any given boss's main source of damage. I always like her for status magic over Satori, too. She can specifically target key enemies more reliably.

I'm not very far in this game though, so I may be wrong on these points.

I.. kind if doubt Byakuren's buffs are "not much better" than Sanae's.
Let's make a little test, shall we?
Reimu, Kusanagi, 406patk. Front of Hinotori Skydance. Skill: Dragon Fang Strike
Enemy: Gigantes (giant, so slayer)
Damage without buffs: 1330
Damage with Sanae: 1692
Damage with Byakuren: 2400

And now for some more fun:
Damage with Byakuren's earth elemental weapon: 3485
Damage with Byakuren, earth + patk: 6091

So, two buffs and Reimu deals over quadruple damage. Sanae can't do that. Sanae isn't bad, but.. Byakuren basically allows one character to REALLY hurt.

Note: Byakuren had 134 IND, Sanae only 20.
Test with Byakuren 59 IND and Sanae 95:

Sanae: 1705 (+13)
Byakuren patk: 2171 (-229)
Byakuren earth: 3417 (-67)
Byakuren both: 5626 (-465)

Now you know everything about buffs. IND doesn't do anything to Sanae, but it does help Byakuren a bit. Though not a whole lot. Nicely balanced I have to say.

As far as I know buffs aren't a percentage. Sanae's res buff saves your ass even if your characters have 0 res.

Byakuren works the same. Her buffs are simply stronger.

You obviously can't count on Last Words. You want to buff as quickly as possible. When you get it: fine, but..
And her 3bomb commander spell is nice for boss-fights, yes. But then you aren't really using her in battle anyway.

I haven't tested amplifying scroll, because I use Byakuren with a dagger. However I'm assuming, all buffs are not a percentage, but simply a static value. For example Youmu's asura stance seems to add about 40patk. This was tested in stage 2, with Youmu having her starting weapon and later a 130patk axe. However I did that test to verify if asura stance is compatible with patk buffs. (it is) Because of that I'm not completely sure if the buffs gave the same amount of patk. Especially because of possible multipliers of the technique I used and stuff.

The one I listed is percentage based. Some have a flat bonus, like the one you mentioned.

Another percentage based one is Sanae's HP buff. It should add around 74-75% hp with everything maxed.

Sanae's RES buff should add 65 RES if you max her passive and have 100IND. I guess you could raise it further using her other buff.

I'm just looking at the final values through an SAL file so there might be some other things added that I can't see.

Wow I did not expect to get this much feedback about Byakuren. I didn't actually know IND amplified the effects of her buffs. But is it true that it doesn't work for Sanae? Anyway, still have a couple of questions about her.

Is it worth it to make the 25 IND scroll for her and will it be useful for a long time?

Also, which other characters does she have the most synergy with when she is buffing? Aya for the +IND so she can inflict death easier with that axe? Marisa for the +MATK? Or Youmu for the +ATK?

And lastly, how should I spec her with 42 POW? Even though you guys pointed out to me that she is a much better buffer than I originally thought, there is still the issue with mana costs. That pretty much means I HAVE to put 16 points into Scroll or 25 into Staves, or she will simply not last more than a few fights. But where should the rest of the points go? The related pic is how she is specced right now.

I have 13 into Status Magic because I like to use petrify with her. She has the accessory that increases the chance to petrify by 33%, so it lands quite frequently, effectively taking out many mobs out of the fight on turn 1, and 1 more per turn after that. Also without that +35 IND that it gives, her IND is just too low, and Aya pretty much HAS to use all of the +IND gear I have or else her death effect never lands. Right now Byakuren has only 52 IND without those accessories, and it seems to be enough to at least land petrify consistently.

And I put 25 into staves because without that regen and +mp her mana won't last long enough to get through any dungeon. But if I made her the +25 IND scroll, and alternatively put 16 points into Scrolls, that would free up 9 more POW and she would still have that mp regen. Does that sound worth it?

>>8946646
A lof of Sanae's final multipliers from IND only have a 25% boost while Byakuren's might be 50%. Then you have some of her skills that have a lower base power so it ends up not making as big as a difference as it would on Byakuren.

Math from the ATK buff I posted earlier
Base Power x Passive x IND bonus(100max)

Sanae 15x1.5x1.25
Byakuren 33x1.4x1.5

So I have to revert to the original japanese files on version 2.08, so I can then patch it to 2.09 and then re-install the translation patch? I'm still confused on how to do this.

First of all I downloaded the game from this link in the OP:

>>8911857
>The whole game prepatched with the translation and game manual (5 parts)

And that gives you the 2.08 version with the translation, so it's not fully patched.

Is exp/power share different if you have, say, 3 instead of 5 in a party?

>> No.8946905

>>8946869
it isn't. So you SHOULD use 5+1 people when grinding so they can all benefit... but there's a 4+1 formation which grants more experience. I don't know if it is useful though - one 2hu less getting xp, and no other bonuses like in Ripple...
POW increase is the same for every single 2hu, in party or not. And the value is absolute unlike XP, which decreases or increases depending on level. POW grinding usually means mowing through the early stages.

Oh, that. It's actually the 2.09 version.
Whoever packed that did update to 2.09 and then applied the translation changes, but the devs forgot to make the 2.08->2.09 patch change the system.ini to show the correct version.
You can change it yourself, it's the second line in system.ini. But the rest of the files are the properly modified 2.09 ones.

Sanae seems to be practically not effected at all. Look at my examples at
>>8945703

Those use the exact same RNG numbers as well. So the difference in damage between 20 and 95IND was just +13. With slayer and a good technique. So probably something around 3patk...
If we assume the buff is really giving a percentage, the increase was about 0.75%, because of Reimu's innate ~400patk. (Which actually makes sense. 100IND = +1%)
As for Byakuren, the difference was much much bigger. Though it seems the elemental weapon isn't as much effected as a normal status skill.

>>8946646

You can buff whoever you want. Just look at my aforementioned example though. For physical attackers her elemental enchantment is way better than a patk buff. (And costs not much more) It seems to add about 100% damage from whatever element you choose. So, provided the enemy has at least one of the four elements it doesn't resist, you should get double damage. If it's weak to one element, it's even more effective.

The idea with her is, just like with Sanae, to use one buff per battle. You look at the encounter and decide with whom you want to deal the most damage. With Sanae you use res+ or something else, if res isn't needed. I was never a fan of IND+, but if it does work for you, go ahead and use it. Though you can simply kill the enemies as well. (Usually)

>> No.8946975

>>8946512

Sakuya can only target(!) one enemy. Yes, it can MAYBE happen that her bomb spells hit other enemies as well. But that's just a big and fat maybe.
That's one of the biggest problems of Sakuya anyway. The whole death-thing is already "maybe" enough, you really shouldn't add a "maybe I'll be hitting that enemy too".

Oh and, about Mokou: Why curse? I used it once a short time ago and completely forgot about the curse-effect canceling any other effect. Bye paralyze. Useless effect is useless. The quick "burn" effect is actually better if you want to argue to give Mokou IND. But.. it's really not a good idea. She hits hard. So give her stuff to hit even harder.
Also I personally don't use Aya in the Byakuren party and Satori not at all. So, no problem. And actually, Byakuren doesn't even need it that much, given that I use her mostly for buffing. 2170 damage without the +75 IND from two accessories, 2400 with them. And the element enchantment is even less effected.

>> No.8946999

>>8946975
regarding Sakuya, it doesn't even have to be only instant death. Try giving her e.g. the Psycho Dagger, which petrifies. Misdirection, half the enemies are dead or petrified. Aya, your move.

regarding Mokou, as I said, the least enemies are resistant against Curse. Like foreign gods or bosses. You can't paralyze those, and only a few select enemies can be petrified. You curse and start ripping with Reisen.
But you're right, it's a shame when something more useful like Paralyze gets overwritten. But you're always in perfect control of your permanents anyway, mixing up those skills shouldn't happen

Yep, without any IND she only gets around 22%. With 100 IND it only goes up to around 27%. It seems like mostly her defensive buffs have good multipliers. Her Physical Def up, Magic Def up, and HP up get 2x multipliers from IND.

Yeah, if you pump all of Marisa's POW into lasers and Sparks, she'll get Warrior/Mage slaying. With a debuff to defense and a buff to MATK from Byakuren, the damage you do should be pretty good to finish them off(the cooldowns are too long for it to be a reliable damaging strategy though). I suggest testing the damage output before attempting this though.

At this early stage of the game I can't really afford to go full Great Magic. I pretty much have to put 16 points into Scrolls, or else she won't have any regen at all. But that leaves me with only 29 points left, so if I drop the rest into Great Magic I won't have anything left for Status Magic or Support Magic. Byakuren has got to be the biggest POW whore in the entire game.

>Congratulations, you're finally understanding why it's a bad idea to simply ignore all character-specific weapons!

I've always been in favor of using character-specific weapons, especially for Marisa, Youmu, and to a lesser extent Sanae, Byakuren and Sakuya. Those four I think are just way better with a good solid character weapon than they are with non-character specific ones.

On an unrelated note, I just realized that I am having more fun playing this game than I would be having with modern RPG's on modern consoles (such as Tales of Graces F)... This just boggles my mind.

So, I heard those Obsidian are rare and you need a lot. And you should farm Hydras. Well, that I did, and after a surprisingly short time I got it working. Maybe took.. 2 hours?
Like always, always starting the game new (no f12!) after each try is mandatory.
So the actually working sequence involves stepping three times on the healing circle (yes, this IS important, very much so), going into the western room, fleeing from the first two encounters (hydra is the third) and then 7 turns of very specific fighting.

Only "downside": Each battle gives almost 5000experience as well. After all a 190% Byakuren Last Word is part of it. (And the 7turns are a bit annoying, but.. well whatever)
Clearing the room takes maybe a good half hour and results in 11 obsidian (pic related). More than good enough.

I can only recommend this kind of farming method. There is no guarantee of it working, and it IS kind of a hassle. But if you are lucky, you can get a whole lot of materials. (i.e. Hydras also drop Trapezohedron.. which you will probably get a couple of times before you get one Obsidian. Pretty good if you still need some.. I don't)

So far, it looks more like another rebalance/expansion/patch than a casualized version. I'm glad to see that even after changing the engine to something that doesn't suck ass, they still haven't given up on that game.
I'm a bit curious about the details on that EASY MODO though... I mean, are the increased drop rates and easier crafting exclusive to it? If so, can you turn it on, craft stuff, then go back to normal mode; or that thing about the dungeons? Hopefully they will answer all of these questions eventually, even if it means waiting until the release.
I was hoping for some kind of difficulty choice when you start a game, giving better rewards if you play on a harder mode, but if everything is being made easier like this I doubt that will be the case.
ALSO WILL THEY MAKE SATORI LESS GRINDY
>>8952312
Yeah, DoD has always had better monster sprites, possibly to make up for the derpish player sprites (or maybe because the sprite artist from GoS decided to do them this time).

No seriously, can someone tell me how to beat these fuckers without people dying?

They completely ignore Alice's Bait.
They have no significant weakness.
They have tons of HP (2000).
Despite having no RES stat, NOTHING ever afflicts them.
They attack twice, and their second attack is pretty much guaranteed to do enough damage to one shot any caster.
Their attacks completely ignore DEF, making Sanae's DEF buff and Alice's Marrionette Parrar useless.
And lastly they never EVER miss.

They, make, me, so, ANGRY! They are so God damned cheap it's like they are bugged or something.

The same guy that did the monster sprites for GoS also did the monster sprites for DoD. I can tell because his faces all look the same and I've been seeing his sprites in games for many years. I will admit they look much better because of the higher resolution. GoS monster sprites were low rez so they didn't look as good.

I wasn't sure if you were saying the character sprite artist from GoS did them. That's what it read like to me so I might be wrong. I don't know what the character sprite artist from GoS did in DoD, maybe the backgrounds? Maybe a few of the monster sprites? He doesn't really update his blog so it's hard to tell but I think I remember him saying he was doing backgrounds in those developer diaries. He was not the main person in charge of monster sprites.

Character Sprites:
GoS: 猫ペンギン DoD: 瓢箪
Monsters:
GoS: ロドニー DoD: ロドニー
Backgrounds:
GoS: 瓢箪 DoD: 猫ペンギン?

It feels like I've said this before.

The drop/learn rate patch isn't included in the prepatched files and I wouldn't recommend it in the first place since it kind of ruins one of the fun (challenging) part of the game.
Only reason you'd want it is because you absolutely have to get every single skill for Satori and materials aren't that big of a problem as long as you don't go on a spree on making items.

>> No.8956217

>>8956145

What the fuck is challenging in this game? Farming for 100hours is more challenging than farming for 50hours? Really?
I'll never understand this kind of thinking. The drop-rate patch isn't giving you everything you need for free. It's only making it take a more reasonable time. And everything but materials is still dropping normally.

Needing to put more time into farming DOES NOT make the game more challenging. Never ever. Only more annoying.
This is similar to exp grinding. A game doesn't become challenging, just because you have to grind more.

Why don't you try working with what you have instead of cheating and using a patch? Or why not just download an ssg file and give yourself materials if you just want to save time?

Is there a line that some of you won't pass? If the drop patch raised material drop rates to 20% would you still use it?

you -can-, it's simply absurdly difficult then. Those 20 levels for the pre-expansion final boss DO make a difference.

Nevertheless, I would say that unless you think that RNG utterly hates your guts and/or you're willing to manipulate it, I don't think you need the patch. For non-completionists, the standard item drop rate should suffice. Should.

Not really, even though it's glorified and all it doesn't really change much - the only thing it does is change the drop rates of the basic materials such as iron and etc from 5% or so to something more manageable, like 10%. It's not going to help at all if you want to make every single character-specific equipment in the game; at most it will let you make more of the elemental weapons. Also, it has the AMAZING benefit of making Satori a lot less grindy, so she can be more useful for you without needing to grind hours for a 1%(3%) skill. It makes the game slightly easier, yeah, but it doesn't change the experience of it at all.
>>8956455
Buffing Youmu's RES with Byakuren should help a lot with surviving that, and if you really want to make sure she never gets dispelled, cover her every turn.
>>8956480
At least the shikigami system is much more manageable than Satori's blue magic, and much more rewarding as well. I don't think you're supposed to get a 75% damage reduction in everything on the first yukkuri you kill (but yeah, recruiting the monsters right before the final boss is a pain).
>>8956618

My second party was Alice, Youmu, Sanae, Patchouli, and Byakuren. I gave Sanae a MDEF accessory and Youmu a ribbon. Patchouli had one of her robes and Byakuren had her MDEF scroll. The boss did mild nuisance damage to me with its regular magical attacks which was very easily healed by Byakuren or Sanae.

And even then Alice little legioning every other turn while having hourai doll up allows her to soak up the brunt of it.

Nothing multi target from what I remember. I always had Alice keep hourai doll up and I don't remember anybody suddenly getting oneshot.

The final boss's final form's strategy is pretty much spam elemental spells until it gets a land to max then uses drain element, Patchy with null land pretty much nerfs the effectiveness of this tactic entirely.

Also apparently cover works for vortex. So you can use Alice's single target cover ability on turns where Youmu is heavily buffed. Didn't know this during the fight though, but I got rather lucky with the two vortexes dispelling only two buffs total the entire fight. Alice's hourai doll the first time which might've been when she was little legioning and Youmu's elemental shield self buff while she had every single other buff. That still makes me smirk.
