Basically old computers only had 95 visible characters for the Latin alphabet, punctuation, and so on. Then someone discovered that more languages have even more letters, and lots of people made their country's computers have their letters. Then someone else realized there were all these letters everywhere, and they would only work in certain countries/programs/computers. So that man made Unicode, a way of combining all the letters into one standard.

Now they have to keep coming up with new letters every day (usually inventing their own) otherwise they're out of a job.

Do typographers have to make all these? I know there are language-specific fonts and software can fall back on them, but what about the basic multilingual plane or whatever it's called? Do people who make my silly anime fonts have to make all the different kinds of "e" with different sizes and diacriticals used in Europe?

There are fonts that support most[1] characters in the standard. The majority of fonts only include Latin-1. The rest are boxes w/ the hex of the codepoint.

Unicode makes me realize how complicated other languages are.

I know not every culture thinks the same way, and no one person can decide how a language works, but why couldn't everyone just use a simple set of characters arranged in different orders like English does? No underdots or diacriticals or any of that bullshite.

Well I know that GNU's Unifont supports all of (?) the BMP, but it's only intended to be an ugly stand-in until proper fonts come along.
