DBAN - burn the file to a disc, run it, and it permanently erases all data on whichever hard drive you select. Don't smash your old HDD, save them for an emergency or something.

TrueCrypt - create a secure 256bit password virtual hard disk and store / save your images on to them directly. (You can also hide these files but you have to be careful not to overwrite them).

And with Truecrypt you can create a hidden partition and depending on the encryption method the read/write speed is almost the same.

Hell, I hide my Remirias in an external HDD that I let my parents use.
