Well, the big lights and stuff aren't really an american thing, its totally a tokyo thing.

If you want the opposite of that you should probably get out of tokyo, Kyoto is breathtaking and has tons of shrines and parks and stuff to see.

If you have to stay in Tokyo, find any festivals you can to go to if at all possible. I really enjoyed going to castles a lot, check out if there are any nearby where you will be, and ALWAYS have lunch at the smallest hole in the wall noodle shop/stand you see. =)
