Most folklore I've read has it either something that happens after death, something that's transferred vampire-to-vampire, or as a curse from some god or spirit or something. But this height chart is a bit too conservative. Yuugi and Utsuho should be at least 10cm higher, Yukari about 5cm higher.

Conversely, Mokou and Yuyuko should be about 10cm smaller. Youmu should be smaller too, but she's plainly cheating there, anyway.

I might officially announce an order of height if there's a demand (since I set up a height comparison chart in

However, backing up a bit...generally speaking, they're about as tall as girls in their early teens ['10代前半' means 10 to 14 years old]. A
suitable breakdown would be something like:
Tall: Sakuya, Meiling, Yukari
Fairly Tall: Reimu, Yuyuko, Alice, Letty, Ran
Fairly Short: Marisa, Youmu, Patchouli, Lunasa, Merlin
Short: Remilia, Lyrica, Chen, Cirno, Rumia, Flandre
Basically, if we consider the top level as the height of a human in her late teens or older ['10代後半以降' means 15 years old or above] and the bottom
level as the height of a human in her early teens ['10代前半' ], that puts them in a fairly short class (though none of that
level are human). If their sizes appear to be different on the game screen than given above, it's because of
some mystic force like perspective, so pay it no mind. :-)

Well youkai are basically a "species" (or above), so two youkai make youkai babies, or a human and a youkai make a half-human half-youkai baby like Rinnosuke. Since vampires are a type of youkai, I don't see why Mr. and Mrs. Vampire wouldn't have vampire children.

Some other works of fiction make the distinction between "true" vampires (as a species) and humans who become vampires through being bitten. Perhaps Touhou is similar.

We've tried to figure out what the hell is up with Touhou's vampires, and the answer we came up with is "Fuck if we know".

The early works from Japan put Yukari as taller. Could be Yukari sitting all the time, but over the years they swapped places.

I'm fine with it. Ran is supposed to be her bodyguard and having Yukari's advantage over ran being mental/magical rather than physical prowess makes their relationship more interesting than just: "she's older so she's bigger and more powerful and that's the way it works".

It always bothered me that Marisa was shorter than Reimu in this picture.
