1) If you're coming from a long way away, and you're expecting a VERY long wait time, garrison your forces a LONG way away from the front lines. For example, I only have a 4 hour trek to the lines, and I think that the enemy won't be able to capture a square about 10 tiles from the front within that time, so I send them out there first. Then, when they arrive, I inch them closer and closer since the time gets cut and the chances of anything going horribly wrong decreases.
2) If you're planning on staying there, FOR GOD'S SAKE check, double check and TRIPLE check that you have the button "Attack and GARRISON" on. This is very important, and very easily missed.
3) When you think your forces have had enough, you have two options of bringing them back:
a) Go to their home base's command center and order each of them to go home
b) Give them one final order to "Attack and RETURN HOME", which is the option I prefer for obvious reasons.
or c) Actually, you can obviously just let them stay in the tile till the enemy finds them, wastes them and sends them back crying to your base, but why'd you want to do that?

Another problem is only engineer can harm it good.
To wall, warlord do 0% damage, engineer 10%, while other troops 1%.

Bases are already incredibly hard to take out with how the wall and castle system works, if you attack with a large force that takes thirty minutes to get there and manage to destroy one level of wall, they could just rebuild it before you even get back from your period.

What I expected from the game was when you attack and win but don't destroy it, you'll go back to the last tile you were in if it was still your kingdoms territory. Not attack, win, walk all the way back to deployment base.

That "last tile" in your example is supposed to be your secondary base. Your interpretation of a siege is simply not the game's interpretation. I could reason it as "Okay, we wrecked this place with all our strength, we're tired, let's rest up somewhere safe", in which case, the secondary base is supposed to be their comfort spot.

A siege is surrounding the target to prevent reinforcement, escape, or resupply. Winning either by starvation or taking it by force. You can't cut off their resources. you can't build a temporary base, the "attacking in waves" Was supposed to be first attack, fall back to tile you attacked from to rest and attack again.

You can take all of the land around him to cut the shared land bonus, but they can live without that. The only base you can build is a full base, if you attack out of a second/third base, you can't attack with the same force you marched there at once because of command center so you have to spend a ton of time and resources to get it to level 10, you can't attack in waves as your entire army will march back to their base, unless you build your full base right next to their base.

So, with negative food income, after you hit zero, you drop into negative food. Other than that, there were no effects as far as I could see. Which is...odd.

I was going to try joining the tea party from the south but I can't get my warlords through all these 5-8 occupant tiles in the Gi starter area.

They have so much attack power that the odd tile sends my warlords packing their periods all the way back home because one goddamn unit survived even though I was victorious.

Might have to look for a SE entrance or super-long NE entrance route or something. It's an awful lot of tiles to get through in any expedient manner, and all that work could get cut off by a simple tile capture from any of the dozens of players.

Send your warlords -unaccompanied- into mini-castles for a cheap and easy level. Build up your base, build up your forces then come join us for a nice cuppa.

So I didn't play in about 2 days, I've now got an army of 1000 spearmen and a terrible food income. My other resources are maxed. Also, we can only build 2 things at a time now? What gives?
