Originally a bunch of arcades were networked together where you would progress with your idol through lessons and auditions against other people throughout Japan. You saved your progress with cards that had a magnetic strip.

You would continue until your idol stopped performing well then she'd have a 'final concert' where she bids farewell to her fans.

The Xbox version kept most of the details, when you play single player it creates fictional 'players' for you to compete against but because it's all AI the game is a lot easier. They also limit the game to one year rather than 'play until you fuck up'. I don't know how that changes the gameplay since I've never played the arcades but I imagine it also makes the Xbox version a bit easier.

In the Xbox version if your idol doesn't perform well on the final concert you get a 'bad end'. Or if you perform well but not on The Dome.

Like Miki who invites Producer in for tea after the performance but he says he's busy and leaves. Or Iori when Producer confesses that he's in love with her but she says 'it's too late for that' and runs off crying to move to Finland.

I don't know how the arcade version plays but I imagine they had the same dialog and just imported them whole cloth.
