The Naruto anime aired in 2002, dude. Bleach aired in 2004. The average /jp/ poster is in their early twenties. There is a good chance either were a lot of people's first anime.

In fact unless you're 30+ or got really lucky in your naive youth and discovered [insert good anime here] by accident, I'd be more shocked if Naruto *wasn't* your "gateway anime".

What do you guys mean by "gateway anime"? I watched Pokémon and Dragon Ball and whatever else was on TV, and I was probably aware it was "anime", but it was Outlaw Star that got me into it.

I didn't grow up in America, but my gateway anime was the anime that aired in the 90s. Things like Doraemon and Lupin, Cat's Eye, Shin-Chan, Sakura Wars, Gatekeepers, Sazae-san, all that stuff.

first marathoned anime was escaflowne, then watched akira and NGE.

My gateway Anime was Super Dimensional Fortress Macross that I watched 15 years or so ago dubbed in Greek.

And also a bunch of other obscure weird shit like "Battleship Yamato", "Plawres Jumaru", " Igano Kabamaru " and some strange shit about a kid that moves with his father in their truck to the city and fuck if I remember anything more.

I watched Dragonball and shit, then stopped for a long time.

When I started watching again, I only watched mature shows for mature viewers such as myself. Like GitS, NGE and stuff.

Then I watched FLCL, realized I've been missing the point, and started watching everything without prejudice, embracing all the weirdness and silliness it had to offer. So I guess that was my gateway anime.

I think the first animes I watched were Shurato and Dragon Quest Dai no Daibouken

My first anime was about some android guy that wanted to be human, and he had a belt that spun and turned him into a robot. He also had robot brothers that he killed one episode saying he didn't care about them, and that shocked me enough to think it was the worst thing ever. The series portrayed him as a good guy, but why would a good guy do something like that, it was crazy. Then he had sex with a girl one episode, and the cartoon silhouette of them having sex gave me a boner.
That show was on around the same time Hack Sign was also on, and I also watched that, but mostly because the intro song to the show was so damn catchy. Those were the first anime I watched, but what really got me into it was Yugioh, when it first aired on US TV in 2000, I remember watching the first episode with my cousin, and the next month we bought yugioh starter decks of yugi and kaiba.

does anyone know the name of that android show I described though? I think I've asked on /jp/ before...
