For those of you actually on medication for depression, how effective has it been for you? I mean I can't help but facepalm at the thought that pills meant to make you less depressed and/or suicidal may actually make you more so.

Medications just fuck you up in the long run, they don't really help.

I'm afraid all you can do is become comfortable with your insanities.

you need to really want to get better for them to work
im not sure how to explain this but they more like amplify your state of mind than cure you

I happen to be an expert in psychology. The pills do help, they either help produce something you need or inhibit something you don't need.

What this guy said.
Seriously, pills fuck you up even more. Make you feel like complete shit.

I'm taking Sertraline and Risperdal. It's not an instant-happy drug, I can't tell when they're working. I get plenty depressed while on them, and plenty without.

The only things I note are the quick side-effects of drowsiness and hunger. I've gained 20 pounds the past year I've been on these medications bringing my body weight to about 110

See, this is why we can't have nice things.

The effectiveness of SSRIs as opposed to placebos is higher for those with severe depression. http://jama.ama-assn.org/content/303/1/47.short?home

OP here. How good have your docs been at prescribing the right drug(s) for you the first time around? I mean I've heard stories of long trial/error process. The thought of them immediately fucking up and causing permanent damage is intimidating.

>> No.8844239

The effect can be subtle and it can sometimes take a while to find the right drug that works for you. What I'd say is that they won't actually make you happy, it's more that they make it so the lows aren't as low, but also that the highs aren't as high.

If you think emulating happiness or fulfillment by flooding your brain with the chemicals you should be producing yourself by achieving things, go for it.

Its always a long process, and even if you find something that works, you'll always have to titrate the doseage.

Not at all how these things work.

Started with aripiprazole (Abilify), worked pretty well at first. Started about a year ago. Since 4-5 weeks ago though, I abruptly stopped (without even discussing with my doctor), which in retrospect, was a pretty bad idea. But I haven't suffered from any withdrawal symptoms.

I think it was starting to lose effectiveness a few months before I stopped. I constantly had this scratching/grinding feeling in the back of my heart (literally). It was pretty awful.

Now that I'm off them, I feel like I'm back to hating the world again and with no motivation to do any work. I don't care that much though. Maybe I'll restart later on if things get worse. I dunno.

When I first got depressed, I tried seeing a doctor about it.

Ended up trying a ton of different pills. None of them worked, and the side effects killed my will to go on with it.
Any positive effect the pills gave me (If any) were easily overshadowed by the negative ones. Things like constant headaches, even more impaired logical facilities, insomnia, weight gain, appetite shifts, mood swings, increased depression (only a few pills did this), and lack of libido, in most cases just made things worse.

What did work was getting out of my situation. Moving to a new area, throwing away all my old things, a better diet, a chance to pursue my hobbies, and a little self inflection did the trick just fine.

Abilify gave me a twitch that never went away, it's been six years and it's not letting up at all.

I think I can see why you would want to stop taking them.

I took medication for anxiety and ADHD and now I have microchips in my brain the reptilian jews use to monitorate and control my behavior.
It also gave irreversible brain damage.

I take geodon zoloft and xanax. Geodon got rid of the hallucinations so I am glad for that. The other stuff helps too, but nothing works 100%. But I'm definitely better on them then off them. But when I try to stop taking any of them I get horrible withdrawal.

>> No.8844303

I took pills for about one year or more. My psychiatrist changed them at some point and increased the doses too. I took about 4 types but the only one I can remember is Xanax. The only real visible effects were the side effects (dry mouth and such). They seemed to somewhat work at the start and when I switched them as I felt a bit relieved (I was actually able to go to university) but after a month or less I would stop feeling anything from them (and dropped out again).
