Depends on who's playing against who and how often you play against each other. Our group has a guy of which we know that when he plays a morph, it's either Bane or Exalted Angel. From context it's often possible to deduce which of the two it is.

(Naturally, it still goes off before anybody manages to do anything about it.)

Yeah, you can make it work though. Use Undying creatures, espsecially Strangeroot Geist. Put a Hex Parasite in there, you can use it to remove +1/+1 counters from any creature that came back with undying; effectively giving it undying again.

black/green glissa can work somewhat

you can build around a lot of little interactions like piston sledge, perilous myr, ichor/mycosynth wellsprings, molder beast, and so on.

note that this hasnt really gained anything from innistrad block, and when i say "can work somewhat" i don't mean it could beat "good" decks consistently. still a lot of fun though

Right now I'm running her in a Modern BGW Zombies deck, but all she recurs is Engineered Explosives and Tidehollow Scullers. I feel retarded whenever I PtE something, though.

I wanted to use the Mirrodin spellbombs but I can't really mainboard any and although the white and black ones would be nice in certain matchups, between my Glittering Wishboard and Kataki, the sideboard is full.

>>8809819
It effectively removes flying and first strike from all creatures, and makes double strike less powerful. It doesn't do what it seems to do at first, but it's still a very useful ability if you don't run any flyers and play low-toughness creatures.

Uh, ever heard of Dredge? Put a whole bunch of cards in the graveyard and use reanimation/graveyard effects/graveyard triggers/graveyard as resource? Yesterday I was playing slow multiplayer casual and there was a prick who was trying his new Dredge deck. Long story short, by turn 5 he had over 30 cards in his graveyard, 8 2/2 zombie tokens and four creatures that returned from the graveyard to play with haste at the beginning of each turn. And that with only two lands.

Black-green is not only a commonly used combination, it's even a very tournament-viable combination.

>> No.8810057

Ugh

Okay

SO

Syndromes line was "Once Everyone is Super... No One Will Be"

The card reflects that- because giving EVERYTHING 1st Strike and flying makes those abilities pointless- hence by giving everything those special abilities, it makes those abilities pointless.

It's just a joke card.

This. As the game progressed, they added too many gimmicks. Now you *need* the latest set, because the 5/5 with Flying and Haste you previously thought was cool doesn't have protection against the latest mechanic, Money Sink.

Every TCG has power creep. Magic has it very slowly compared to other TCGs, though. That, combined with the fact that they sometimes take a step back power-wise (Mercadian Masques, Kamigawa, Innistrad) makes MTG very balanced for a TCG. With the introduction of the Mythic rarity it's been going faster, though. I'm not sure if Innistrad is enough of a step back.

As for Legacy and Vintage, they're not valid points of comparison. They're littered with mistakes design made over a span of 19 years. Every set has a couple cards or a mechanic that proves too strong, and the eternal formats combine all of the mistakes made in 19 years * 3+ expansions per year. It's a miracle the formats are even playable.

>> No.8811508

I've always been interested in MTG, but never actually played it. Is there a way I can play it on my PC against the computer? Preferably for free

I think Wizards made an MtG: Online where you pay for cards, but you get the basic sets for free.

There are also programs like Apprentice I think it was called, but they were basically just aids to playing over IRC or IM.

Yeah, Tempest~Urza's Saga was probably the most power-creepy part of magic's history. It's mostly just creatures that have been getting better.

Yes. There's an old win95 game simply called 'Magic: the Gathering' by MicroProse that lets you do exactly that. The game around the card battles is pretty awesome too, you wander around a world traveling from city to city where you can buy cards, you can discover dungeons to search for banned cards, etc. Very much worth playing. The MTG fanbase generally refers to it as 'Shandalar', named after the plane it takes place on. It doesn't contain any of the newer cards, though; only all of 4th Edition and some Alpha/Beta/Unlimited, Arabian Nights and Legends stuff.

There's also the newer 'Duels of the Planeswalkers' games, but they're very limited and don't even allow you to construct your own deck. They're 20$ each on Steam, I think. One is currently 66% off if the offer hasn't expired yet (daily deal or something).

>There's also the newer 'Duels of the Planeswalkers' games, but they're very limited and don't even allow you to construct your own deck.
They allow to modify the existing decks to some extent though.
Nothing spectacular, but still perfectly playable and fun in multiplayer, especially after all the expansions. Was pretty boring initially when you knew what deck enemy is playing after the first land

>> No.8814508

>>8811793
Yes, but it still caters to a very limited range of players. For a large part of the userbase, deck construction is one of the main elements of the game, if not the biggest appeal to the game. If you're the kind of person who just orders the best-performing deck and tries to play it as well as possible, a game like that is fine, but I want to at least be able to say I won using my own deck.

>> No.8819689

>>8819363
You play one land card per turn (if you have one). Land cards give you one mana per turn. This mana can be spent to play creature, artifact, enchantment, instant, sorcery and planeswalker cards. The mana cost for a card is printed in the top right side; icons mean a specific type of mana (for example a fireball means mana from Mountains), a number means any kind of mana will do. {2}{fireball}{fireball} means '2 of any color plus two red mana'.

Once you've played creatures, they can attack the other player. Both players start with 20 life, and creatures deal damage equal to the first number on the bottom right of the card ('2/4' means it will deal 2 damage). To prevent this damage, you can have one of your creatures 'block' the opponent's attacking creature. They deal damage to each other instead of damaging a player. If in one turn a creature is dealt as much or more damage as the second bottom-right number ('2/4' means '2 power, 4 toughness'), it dies.

Almost every creature and many lands also have special effects written in their text box. For example, >>8809793 deals damage before it's dealt damage (first strike), which avoids damage to herself if she kills the other creature first, and any creature she damages dies instantly (deathtouch). Furthermore, if an opponent's creature dies, she can return an already destroyed artifact from the discard pile (graveyard) to the player's hand.

>> No.8819696

(continued from >>8819689)

Artifact and enchantment cards are cards that remain in play until destroyed that can't attack like creatures, but do have effects just like creatures can have them. Instant and sorcery cards are cards that are played once, have an effect, and are then immediately discarded to the graveyard again (for example, 'Shock' for one red mana says simply 'Shock deals 2 damage to target creature.'). Then there's the relatively new type 'Planeswalker', which are played and remain in play like an artifact/enchantment, but have a 'loyalty' (starts at the bottom right number), can be dealt damage to reduce its loyalty, and can use one effect per turn which affects the loyalty by the amount displayed in front of the effect. (The fake >>8809778, for example, has as first effect 'add 3 loyalty counters: exile (remove completely from the game, not even to the graveyard) target permanent (any card that remains in play, so a creature, land, artifact, enchantment or planeswalker)'.

The game ends when all players except one or one team have lost. A loss occurs by having 0 or less life, trying to draw a card while your deck of cards (library) is empty, having 10 'poison counters' (given by specific poisonous creatures), losing the game through a card effect (Door to Nothingness is an artifact with an ability that causes a player to lose the game if used), or having an opponent win the game through a card effect (Epic Struggle is a card that makes you win the game if you have 20 or more creatures at the beginning of your turn).

Players play the game in turns using decks they constructed beforehand according to certain rules (4 copies per card maximum, 60 cards in deck minimum, etc). Players start the game with 7 random cards from the deck and draw an additional card per turn.

>> No.8819698

(continued from >>8819696)

That's pretty much the basics of Magic. As almost every card has different effects and the effects can range widely, even changing the actual game rules, it's incredibly complicated (The comprehensive rules are roughly 200 pages, and for many cards there's specific rulings to clear things up).
