How does Japanese piracy work? Looking for the soundtrack to Love-de-lic's Moon and all I run into are these sites listing file hashes. This seems to be mean that the files exists... somewhere. But where does one go from there? What's with all this anyway? Are anti-piracy laws that much stricter over there?

They use p2p systems like share, winny, perfect dark, etc.

Probably.

Quite a few Japanese people seem to download stuff from NyaaTorrents, and apparently this is the reason (though I find that hard to believe given that they don't have RIAA and MAFIAA to worry about).

A lot of Nips are just voluntarily anti-piracy.

Ah well, it's a start. Guess I just gotta learn how to get it from this: http://hashdb.com/6b0a283d069807dd27a0cb44535979ad58e48788 then. I bet finding translated documentation on illegal japanese software will be a lot of fun.

gotta support those $90 anime dvds for the good of the industry

Anti-piracy isnt strict at all.
People in Japan just have good moral values.
There is hardly any crime and very little rape contrary to the hentai portrayal. You can try dropping your wallet on a street, 99% you can find it back at the nearest koban with your money still intact.
They just dont steal, pirate stuff and buy their eroge and game.
I have never seen any cfw psp or flashcart ds in any of my train trip. I am usually the only gaijin playing pirated games on my PSP. Feels bad man.

while you're right about crime and moral values, you're wrong about piracy. japan has both a huge software piracy "scene" as well as a thriving DIY electronics piracy subculture. i lived there a year and was amazed at how much stuff you could openly acquire there that was so obviously not legit.

Most things worth pirating are on Share/PD/Winny.
Share/PD are anonymous enough in their design, so most jp people feel fine with using it (when properly configured) without having to worry about anything (then some of them are being idiots and post their uploads to 2ch from their home IPs and get busted).

Try starting with wikipedia. I'm sure it has links to english help.

They said this about Wallachia during dracula's time. They're probably scared of the high conviction rate there.

If I recall they work more like WinMX, which most of them are based off of: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/WinMX

Usage-wise, they are similar, but in some ways more specialized (they allow some authentification of uploaders with private keys or with "tripcodes"). Internals/networking wise, they are more like Freenet + Tor than Kazaa, the first one nobody can identify what's going on in the network, while in Kazaa, it's easy for someone to find out what you're serving from your computer, so the difference is mostly in the level of security offered.

But you didnt steal anything.
Finders keeper.

There is no finders keepers in most of the US and UK, you must turn over found property to the police or you are committing a crime.
