I've been seeing more and more people in here recommend DuckDuckGo. Is it another case of viral marketing?

>> No.8756074

Perhaps, or it could be the usual feedback loop of "i herd it wuz gud!" .

>> No.8756080

>>8756067
It might be viral, but only because people like it enough to tell other people. Try it out, and if you don't like it, stop using it. It's not something you make a one-time payment for that really benefits from viral marketing.

It's still Yahoo. Anything else would feel weird to me.

>> No.8756287

None. If I have no pages open, nothing is open. If I have some pages open, some pages are open (the session is kept active from another time the browser was open).

Usually I only keep 1-3 pages open which show some information that I know I will be certainly interested in seeing when I open my browser for the first time.

The point of !bangs (or at least as I see them) are that they're like a list of keywords maintained by other people. You can just guess !imdb and chances are it will work. I used to have a huge list of bookmarks with keywords so I could type "anidb Boku" or "wiki France", but now I've set my address bar keyword.URL to DuckDuckGo, so I just have to type "!touhou Sanae" in my address bar and I get the Touhou Wiki article.
I don't know why Mozilla haven't added the keyword.URL setting to a nice dialog box somewhere. Guess it was part of their agreement with Google.

>> No.8758813

>>8758777
I wouldn't say Google respect my freedom. They remove and tailor search results in ways I have no control over. I have to do things the "Google way" because there's no other option. I'd respect this as their choice IF they respected my privacy, however.

I like that you don't need an account for most Google services though. Of course it's common knowledge by now that you're already profiled even if you DON'T sign up for anything, but I'm just happy they're not going to make me sign up before I can watch YouTube videos any time soon.

>> No.8758824

they remove results in accordance to requests to have it removed, they don't really have control over that considering they're US-based.

I remember when "Active Desktop" was the big new thing in Windows 95 or 98 and you could set a HTML page as your wallpaper. I basically made a very bad GeoCities-esque page complete with marquee tags and flashing links to my favourite sites. Saved me a whole two seconds it would have taken to open Internet Explorer or Netscape, THEN click a link.
