Revival thread #2

about GoS
/jp/ has discussed this game before, a rather long, difficult touhou rpg, translated. Awhile ago it received some updates that greatly improved stability and performance, the game was rather crashy with the English patch before these patches, so it's worth updating.

The whole game prepatched with the translation and game manual (5 parts)
http://www.mediafire.com/?a8c1by6btaid7

If you already have the game it's most likely at version 2.06. You can get the 2.07 and 2.08 patches here: http://www.gensoukyou.org/bose02/game02/update.html
and the 2.09 patch here http://www.gensoukyou.org/bose02/update.html
After updating to 2.09 the game task bar will still read 2.08 for some reason.
The english files to copy over for 2.09 http://www.mediafire.com/?hwfe9kaur3d08c3
If you updated your game you'll need to run the exe in your save folder to convert your saved games to work with the new engine.

Desperately need tips for those fucking birds in Yuuka's garden. They just keep spamming petra breath until my entire party is petrified. If I get the first turn I can use Sanae's RES up, then I get a slightly better chances, but they use the same breath attack every turn, so it's still only a matter of time until it goes through on everyone. I can use Aya's breath reflect to keep her alive, but that doesn't really do any good because I'm just forced to re cast it every turn while everyone else is petrified.

And then after dying for the 5th time in a row to the same set of enemies, the game has the balls to give me the tip, "When strong enemies appear, it would be best to escape." No shit, too bad it doesn't work when half your party is petrified on turn 0.

Also, how do Mokou's spells that have the grants reraise effect work, do they only just revive you at full health if you die the turn they're used?

do you have the Formation "Sonic Stream"? (use Aya scan on a couple enemies and go to your shrine circle). It grants you insane initiative in exchange for a big def penalty.

then put at least Marisa and Patchouli in that Formation and fry those fuckers before you're all stone.

By the way, your Satori needs to be 30 to learn that awesome Petro Breath. 1% chance is really fucking low, but they use it all the time anyway so...

I feel bad about never finishing this. I think the last boss I beat was reimu's turtle. the enemies were too frustrating and I felt like I couldn't advance without grinding a ton.

Both games are grindfests. Although if you think stuff through, you can beat DoD without grinding much. And in DoD, all magic is done through Shikigami or Last Words, and some weapons do have magical attributes.

>> No.8737367

>people think GoS requires grinding and not correct strategy

If you run dungeons with the right setup, even when underlevelled you'll be okay. Grinding 5 levels won't make a difference when you're using the wrong party, skills, equips and growth tree.

>> No.8737449

Sanae carried my through the whole game with her buffs and healing.

>> No.8737460

the only point in maingame GoS where you might consider grinding is before the final boss. And that doesn't take THAT terribly long, it's not worse than, say, leveling up a bit in your favorite MMO.

>>8737367
I wanted the more powerful spells though and getting them meant grinding 10+ levels. I had been using the same ones for a long time and it was getting boring.

>> No.8737465

GoS requires almost no grinding.

I got to the final stage/Gorgon Barrier in the 49-53 range from what I remember. And beat Lithos close to that range as well. I literally used strategy to blast past through every boss fight and every dungeon was at least 50% juking mobs while collecting treasure chests.

But then I grinded like a fucker for the final boss which on second thought might've not been necessary since I beat her on my first serious try of a particular strategy. Actually might've been necessary due to how much power I needed to optimize Mokou's and Youmu's growth trees.

>> No.8737562

Just when I wanted to talk about this.
I FINALLY got out of Yuuka's garden. Those fucking birds with Petra Breath were annoying. And I had to walk around for what I think were hours until I finally realized where the path to Yuuka was.
Then I had problems with Medicine (no weakness) until I realized I could pulverize her with Youmu.

One thing is bothering me. Either I'm using a patched executable, or I'm getting too lucky. How could I check if I'm using the drop rate patch?

>> No.8737613

Are you being lucky with material drops or lucky with equipment drops?

Material drops are the only thing that's modified in the drop patch. Equipment drops all have a decent 5/10% rate from what I know.

DoD is considerably less grindy than GoS, in fact just killing every enemy in a region will give you enough levels to always get a bit less from encounters because you're a bit overleveled. And then you get to the final dungeon and yeah, I guess you will need to grind a bit... and then the final boss and oh boy I hope you enjoy killing Yukkuri Kings.
At least you won't ever need to grind for items in this game - in fact, you can pretty much craft every weapon you find a recipe for and never run out of materials, at least until you get to the Orichalcum/Adamantite stuff, because there are only five of each in the game and you can't find more of them.

We told you, bro.
It's not like it's hard to keep everyone almost evenly leveled, too - and even if you really want to only use the same party for every dungeon, there's the commander slot so you can keep your level 1 characters safe.
I actually like how this is a RPG where you're required to use your entire party instead of just focusing on a few characters you like.
>>8738024
Most of her attacks target a column, so try putting your tank in a formation like Hinotori something or Poison Shield. Also, get Sakuya's personal weapon that has slayer effect on beasts and enjoy your bunny butter.

And thanks, I hadn't seen that Reisen's attack was one-column.
With Tewi, I just debuffed her with Byakuren's ACC down, and then Youmu took care of the rest. Maybe I was lucky, but with the debuff she didn't hit in three or more turns.

Sanae has a (somewhat expensive) RES spell, so use that whenever there are squids on screen. If you have 25 power points you can get it down to 6 or so MP, though, so abuse that if you can.
Also, they're pretty weak to instant death and stab attacks, so get a few spears, guns, or Sakuyas to help you. An Aya is nice too.

I used the walkthrough and it helped me quite a bit, though it is spotty in some areas. All the bosses seem to be more strategy dependent than power dependent so the walkthrough saves a lot of frustration in trial and error. With it I never had to grind until the final boss where I just didn't have some of the skills it recommended I have. For personal satisfaction I was proud of the fact that I was constantly underleveled throughout the whole game to the point where I was constantly getting bonus experience. It was somewhat enjoyable when I was at the Gorgon Barrier and was getting triple experience despite the fact I kept my party very evenly leveled throughout the game so nobody was lagging in levels.

What's the problem with Tewi by the way? I don't remember having too much trouble during that fight.

The most troubling boss fight in the game for me was Tenshi due to the walkthrough not having any mention of Sakuya's Great Maid at the time I was at that point personally though it seems to have that mentioned now.

Ancient Duper. Every now and them, bam everyone dies. Thankfully enough, it has low accuracy, and you can make it never ever hit with an EVA buff and by reducing her accuracy.
As for Tenshi, I had trouble once... because I gave Alice the wrong shield. In fact, getting Sakuya's Great Maid didn't even help that much in that fight.
>>8739125
I thought of making one and posting it on the wiki's weapon page when I got to the end of the post-expansion game, but laziness was stronger than me (and I never really got there). The sprites are probably in a sprite pack somewhere in the world, but I doubt it has the weapons attached to their users.

Actually no.
After checking the walkthrough, I figured that she was a gimmick boss and that low accuracy thing applied to all her attacks, and if I just had Sanae boost my dodge I'd be fine.
Well, I avoided her Ancient Duper just fine, but that didn't stop her from shredding my squishy mage party with her basic attacks, which never missed once.
Oh, and she has an AoE sleep move. Go figure.

Did you try those glowing circles on the ground? Those bring your characters back to full MP and bombs when you step in them.

Also land is different from the field. The field is basically a slot for one effect that lasts however long it does. If there is a field effect going on, you can see its effect and duration by canceling out of the first character in the action select queue. There can only ever be one field effect at any moment, if another is cast while one is going on then the previous field effect gets overwritten. Land has nothing to do with field effects. Though there are some field effects that affect land. Land is the general indicator of a particular element's dominance in any given battle. You can see it in the upper right corner of the screen when canceling out of the first action select. There are 3 meters representing the diametrically opposed fire/water, air/earth, and light/dark. If a bunch of fire spells are cast in a single battle, then the meter for fire/water goes up in the fire direction. It would then take a whole lot more water spells to cancel that out and bring it into the water side. There are spells by Patchouli for specifically affecting the land. Also some skills can only be used when the land is in a certain state. Enemy skills mostly so if you ever see insufficient land power when an enemy fails to do something it's because they tried to cast something that requires a certain land percentage. Also regeneration effects are common for enemies with affinities to certain elements if the land gets boosted for that element. So if you want Mokou's regen then you need to use fire spells or use her fire aligned skills when she gets them.

I love the amount of strategy I need in GoS. It's not even luck or brute strength or anything. One tactic can get you brutally slaughtered while another will make you invincible.

For the left side, you need to figure out the eternal corridor.
The solution is Go into the upper door right next to the door with the lights next to it, then go down twice. I think. The wiki walkthrough actually gets this part right, if you need more help.
For the right side, you need to go back outside and search the forest more thoroughly. There's some fairly obvious hidden passages in the bamboo.
Both parties should search their area thoroughly, in fact. There's some very nice treasure hidden around the place. Be sure to check for hidden passages under the overhanging roof.

The chance of recruiting a Hagure Yukkuri is 0.1%. The chance of recruiting Yukkuri Sisters/King/Metal is around 0.4%. At least items in chests go back to them if you die.
>>8740392
That's the idea, hunting for character-specific synthesis items is not something you're really supposed to do in this game, at least before the expansion. The best rate you'll get for them is 1% with the most bullshit monsters in the final dungeon, too, so good luck if you want to try that. In the expansion, there are quests that always reward you with one of those items and have a 25% chance to give you an extra one, and a 1% chance of dropping a super crafting item, so don't worry about that too much.

The very basics of using Satori at the beginning means going to the Magic Forest and getting her some elemental spells off the mage fairies.

The most basic stuff to get are single target elemental spells of all types as well as multi target ones as well.

She's useful in that she's capable of carrying all elements like Patchouli into battle.

Satori's use ultimately depends on which spells you're willing to grind for however. If you don't have it, get the learning patch. Some skills are a 1% chance to learn and that only gets boosted to 3% if you max out her learning tree. If you don't want to spend several hours doing essentially the same mind numbing task of waiting for things to hit Satori then get the learning patch.

Also, Satori only has a chance to learn a particular skill once per battle. If she doesn't get it the first time, she won't get it no matter what during that specific battle so you have to run away. Also keep in mind, you have to finish the battle if you do learn a skill to actually learn it. If you die or run away it doesn't count.

Satori can cover a wide range of uses. From status inflicter, elemental caster, support, and debuffer. She can do all of these depending on what you spend the time to learn.

For status inflicting, start off with mind blast from mind flayers.
For elemental casting, start with mage fairies and foreign gods.
For support, start off with mass heal from the priests in the netherworld.

Use the JP wiki for treasure checking. You've probably missed a few already. You can check how many treasures you have collected in records. By Kaguya and Eirin you should have a total of 197.

Also since you're in Eientei, consider learning Acid Storm for a cheap multi target water spell that causes -PDEF. It's also possible to learn time stop, but that requires Satori to be level 30.

Also Alice just simply makes life a lot easier in this game. Though I reckon she isn't absolutely necessary for normal mobs until the Gorgon Barrier. There, you need her or you will get wiped unless you use Byakuren as commander, go all out every single battle as fast as possible and head back to the healing circle to replenish bombs repeatedly. Some mobs are still capable of screwing you over right from turn 1 though like queen flayers, machine dragons, and any of the rare spawns. But that's a long ways away.

See, I'd just use Alice and have my party never die at all. Also the party can eventually run out of lives, it does happen. Ironically on my battle against post game Alice. Mokou can tank, but isn't really meant for it. She has no skills that allows her to take a hit for somebody else. And against enemy multi target skills like breaths, she doesn't do jackshit to help keep anybody from dying unless she casts XuFu's on other people which is honestly a bit of a waste. Her party autoraise skill is nice, but costs two bombs and has a long cool down which prevents her from using Fujiyama Volcano for a bit. Resurrecting people is nice, but ultimately isn't a thing that needs to be done in the first place if nobody ever dies. It's also better because cooldowns don't move while a person is dead, so they still have to wait even after they've been revived. There's also the matter of all buffs disappearing even if the character was under the effect of an auto raise skill.

If you ever want to field Patchouli, Satori, or Marisa late game, you have to use Alice or they'll very likely get taken out by the first multi target enemy skill each battle. Patchouli gets some stuff to help deal with magic attacks, but the breaths still destroy her.

Mind blast is a magic attack and petro breath is a breath so both their accuracies are pretty high. Satori has very little problems with MP honestly. She has quite a lot and she has MP use reductions in her growth trees.

Those two skill's main use is in inflicting status. Paralyze and petrify respectively. However Petro Breath won't inflict much damage due to Satori's lack of strength and the fact you'll likely go staves on her due to her eyes taking iron.

I made it a point to keep my characters evenly leveled throughout the game until I couldn't do it any longer at the Gorgon Barrier.

I pretty much just whipped up a team combination using my lowest leveled characters even if it meant a somewhat mediocre team combination.

My favorite characters overall for the regular game would be Alice, Youmu, and Mokou now I guess. I like ludicrous burst damage and tanking.

My favorite formation was Hinotori Skydance, I very rarely used anything else and even those occasions were just for boss battles.

When Gorgon Barrier farming, the best party components seemed to be Alice, Mokou, and Youmu. Whoever's in the last three spots doesn't matter much as Mokou and Youmu are capable of killing everything in the dungeon.

They do what they say. People in particular spots get percentage bonuses and penalties to certain stats depending on the formation. As well as some specific effects for some other formations. You can check the wiki for specific numbers.

http://en.touhouwiki.net/wiki/The_Genius_of_Sappheiros/Formations/Bonuses

Also, everybody's going to die a lot, but you'll never see a character out of lives most of the time since you're likely to run out of bombs or MP much faster and end up going to a healing circle due to it. Also you can't permanently lose characters in this game.

Go into the backup folder of the game. The files in there should be all backup###.sav. Go down to the last one in there that has a long japanese filename and copy it to your current save location. Remember to backup the save you are about to replace it with. Rename the new file "TSD000.sav" and open the game. The save should start you off in the dungeon, moments before you died. Word of caution, the same enemy party you died to will still be the next enemy mob you encounter. If you fight a mob different than you one you died to, the mob will be randomized again. However I've grinded her up to level 60 while farming Lithos's kedama quest and she doesn't seem to have any really decent damage skills. Since we're on the topic. Nitori's, Youmu's, and Sakuya's armors are fairly decent since they also aid their offense. However, with defense not being that relevant as an actual stat since most characters can be categorized in dies in one hit or doesn't die in one hit and most actual hitting being done to your tank optimally, better armor isn't worth being crafted simply due to its defenses being better most of the time.

Alice's armors are also the only heavy armors that give any notable amount of MDEF however you can simply just put a MDEF bracelet in one of her accessory slots for the most part. Even if she takes normal damage from magic, her HP is huge enough that she can still take the hit for the entire party and live in most cases.

She's a good and fun character to use, and the drop rate patch also boosts learning rates. You don't NEED to use her, but you probably should.

probably not essential. My Satori was quite mediocre overall even with stuff like Starlight Barrier and I made it quite far.
She has some broken spells in the expansion - or so I heard.

Her poison build is pretty amazing for the first 16 or so levels, if you don't want to waste too much time grinding her skills.

I never knew where to find poison lily.

Are elemental weapons and attacks elementalized by Byakuren effected by land? Do they effect the land themselves?
If a attack with Sakuya enchanted with fire, will fire levels get boosted and water levels lowered?

Killing an enemy with toxic was easier than I thought, but nothing happened when I went to the healing circle. Why?

I think you need to go there with Alice as your Overworld character.

Forest of Magic 1, 西部北西-I .

The one in the Garden of the Sun? That's weird.

Lucky drops, some chests here and there, I guess, and a post-game quest.

Alice also needs to be in the party when you kill the foes with toxic.

It worked.
God that's obtuse. How are you supposed to find that on your own? Would it be to so hard for Medicine to hint at it or something?

Yes, you can do them over and over again. But there are only a few quest available at the same time and they always change after you finish a quest, so you might need to do some other quest before you can do the same one again.

This can actually be very annoying...

Attacking with weapons that are enchanted with an element will not raise land. When you attack with a Dark Elemental weapon and the land is on maximum light, you will still do normal damage. Land does not influence weapon damage.

I just tried that out using Dark Sword on Youmu and using Reimu to get max. Light.

Yes, no, and no.
Well, actually, I have no idea for the last two questions, but I know that their damage gets stronger with favorable land/Patchuland.

Or not.
What the hell? I was all psyched up for a nightmarish, intense fight. That was pathetic; once I figured out how to deal with her stone shower she never hit for more than 50 damage, and Sakuya and Patchy tore her down in, what, 10 turns?

I am so fucking disappointed.

I'm about to start stage 10 and I decided to collect the treasure I've forgotten to get with the help of the Japanese wiki. God, some of those are in horribly dickish locations, like some of the ones in the Forest of Magic.
