You should really learn a "real" text editor. pico/nano might seem good if you're coming from Windows (and indeed, that was one of the intentions of the original pico), but you will be a lot better off if you know how to use emacs or vi.
Also scrot sucks. Screenshot functionality is pretty much built into X11 through xwininfo/xwd/xwdtopnm/pnmtopng. Or you could use ImageMagick's import program.
