I just got the first Higurashi game in the series (Ch 1-4), and I'm trying to find the sound and graphics patches...however, everyplace I look offered them through MegaUpload, which I obviously can't get to.

Anyone know of any place I can get these patches?

That site solves the music patch problem, but the graphics patch there is still from MegaUpload.

Seriously, don't use the graphics patch. You get used to the hands quickly, and the expressions are actually better in the original.

Seriously, don't hurt your experience, read Higurashi as it was meant to, not the easier to digest commercialized version, it's worth it.

Is there anything missing from the Mangagamer translations besides some sound/music? Like for example I noticed there was no all-cast review section in chapters 5-8, is that how it was in the original release?

I don't really feel like playing the VN. Is the Anime an acceptable substitute?

No, because the VN is spooky scary while the anime falls short of being very enjoyable.

>> No.8681864

Personally, I think that the VN is overrated. The anime is fine, as is the manga, but the VN is terribly draw, terribly voiced, and does a terrible job in making the mood. It's also annoying to have to sit through all those shit transitions.

>> No.8681880

It has never been truly blessed with what some would call a fair translation but they are very enjoyable. At least give it a chance before you dismiss it completely.

>> No.8681886

>>8681864

Sorry VN fans. I agree with this. Even if the VN executes the theme and plot a bit better, there is really nothing wrong with the anime and you're all just being defensive for very little reasons.

Its overrated.

>> No.8681914

I thought the anime's pacing was awkward, and if I watched it before playing the VN, I wouldn't even have cared about the characters. There's a huge, incomparable difference between the end of the first chapter in the VN and in the anime.

I watched the anime before reading the VN. I wish I hadn't because it spoiled the story without presenting it nearly as well or as completely as the VN.

I always thought it was just horrible. Might have captured a few moments greatly but overall was was just pale when compared to the VN,

As someone who watched both seasons, I'm personally putting off playing the VN as long as possible. I definitely plan to play it, but not while the details are still somewhat fresh in my mind (this same problem really spoiled my enjoyment of the Kanon VN). Not like I have any lack of backlog anyway.

Shame that from the sound of it, I shouldn't expect a soundtrack on par with Umineko.

There are some great tracks. Not as good overall, but still enjoyable, specially on the answer arcs where he got dedicated music instead of free stuff from the internet. Make sure to get the patches, or even better, play the j version.

I put the novels off since... well, since Mangagamer released them. And now that I'm finally reading them, I'm glad it's been years since I watched the series. Of course I laugh at everything 34 says, but most of the details I forgot. For example, I had no idea what was happening in Watanagashi with Shion and Mion. "Wait, why does K1 think they are the same person? ...Maybe they are switching places or something?". All in all, I'm enjoying the mystery again.

The anime is very different and for most people strictly inferior experience to the VN, but as it uses the same plot reading/watching one will spoil plot points for the other.

Overall, the anime feels rushed and is lacking in atmosphere and characterization. It's easier to watch (as most scenes that some would consider 'boring' are skipped over) but at the same time harder to understand (some of those 'boring' scenes are pretty vital to the plot), and will cause less immersion (although 'killer lolis xD' is an exaggeration, it is true that you will sooner consider the murders 'awesome' than 'tragic' when watching the anime as you do not really feel much for the characters).

If you wish to experience the atmosphere and characterization that Higurashi is praised for, read the VN. If you want an interesting horror flick with kids killing each other, watch the anime.

Personally, if you're completely unspoiled, I urge you to at least read episode 1 of the VN if you're just going to watch the anime for the rest. Although the first half may seem boring at times, the latter half is an experience you won't forget.
