Right, because /jp/ doesn't already suffer from a lack of acceptable content

Asking what the J-pop scene is like is hardly off-topic for an OTAKU CULTURE board.

If you're really that concerned about 2hu dumps then fuck off to /bun/.

Then why doesn't he ask that right up front?

I am actually on /bun/.

/mu/ isnt exactly the most knowledgeable of music outside the americas and europe, and I thought this question could fit within /jp/ and /mu/, so just tried it out here

weabu music dominates the jap market

Otaku or anime music or whatever you want to call it is actually overshadowed by actual pop culture in Japan. If anything I'd suggest looking at the weekly music charts over in Japan if they have one.

what about non pop?

pop is what goes in america as well but there is certainly more to the music scene than bieber

If you check the japanese itunes weekly top sellers, you can usually find what is popular in any country, I also recommend the music tab on the front page of niconico. But for the most part, j-pop is the most popular there with US and Korean mainstream music behind. It kinda' sucks cause I love their ska and some of their indie rock scene.
try scadman foundation
midnight.pumpkin
potshot
403forbiddena
hi-standard
and pretty much every ska band they have other than tokyo ska paradise and you'll probably at least 1 song per band you'd want on your playlist.

thanks man, ill definitely check this out. any idea on their electric scene? i hear trip hop and dubstep are becoming popular there

>> No.8638973

>>8638956 cont.
they also have a pretty cool metal scene
I don't pay much attention to it though cause I like some of europe's more
their rap and hip-hop has some of the most flip-flop artists who switch between making amazing tracks and shitty ones
most people involved in vn opening/anison are pretty cool (milktub, kotoko (j-pop), fripside, masaaki endoh, CHERRY BLOSSOM)
and their classical music isn't great, but they have some pretty great orchestral composers,

and then theere are touhou arrangements and remixes which are /jp/ related

people here like denpa
if you are familiar w/ xximmortalmagexx, check out her youtube channel,
frankly I don't pay much attention to where my trance/techno/etc. comes from even though I love it
you could check out the exit trance scene with it's anime song remixes and stuff
You could check out the common vocaloid artists like supercell, deadball P, OSTER project (check out these guys's piano/keyboard songs, they're amazing), azuma, ramaz P, storyteller, dixie flatline, cosMo, hachi, doriko.

dude thanks you are a wealth of knowledge, where did you find all of this out? and would you happen to know which electronic genres are more popular over there?

>> No.8639073

>>8639038
nah, man I'm just going on and on about common niconico stuff, really, I'm not sure what your average japanese kid listens to,
I know bands like Boris are really popular overseas, but I dnn't even know if they are in Japan, the pillows is also a really popular rock band, and it's just that the vn/anime/video game gets alot of good artists involved, which reminds me Konami's stock artists, make AMAZING electronic music (DDR and beatmania game songs)

actually I don't really know too well about electric, I when I said here, I meant /jp/, and I meant to clarify that I didn't know much with the I don't know where my 'lectricmuzik comes from line, but I see what I did,
what I know comes from regualr stuff on here, /a/, youtube, niconico, 4-ch, irc's, futaba, and I find myself not normal enough to fit in on 2ch so I don't go there often.
futaba is a really good place to find this stuff, but it doesn't work if you don't know japanese,
if you really wanted to know about the standard scene, I'd recommend going to 2ch and asking them w/ an auto-translator.

When japan makes jazz, they make GOOD jazz. from what ive heard.
Thatd be the seatbelts, the seatbelts, the seatbelts, the seatbelts, and sleepawlkers.
add /yokko kanno to all the seatbelts.

oooh there's also tokyo brass style and paradise lunch, but it's really just their composers and arrangers that are good in that scene (and I take back what I said about tokyo ska paradise if you like jazz), they have some cool bands, but they lack any crazyshit outstanding brass/sax players, but they are proffesionals nonetheless

>> No.8639131

really liking paradise lunch, hearing a song just now.

Japanese popular music is popular in Japan.

However last time I was in Tower Records the Visual Kei section was almost as large as the 'j-pop' section which had more than just j-pop in it. I couldn't find one of my favourite punk bands from the 80s so I asked the person at the counter and she took me to the 'adult j-pop' section.
