Just found out that even if I do graduate I won't be able to get into the JET program because they expect you to be very fluent in Japanese

Bonus: I got to a school that doesn't offer foreign language at all, so of course not Japanese. My last "formal" Japanese class (that is, a formal setting) was two years ago.

What do, /jp/?

Uh, what? The only JET position requiring any japanese ability at all is CIR (coordinator for international relations). ALTs can and frequently do have very little Japanese experience.

>> No.8635082

I was always under the impression that JET didn't care that much about your japanese skills but I guess they had to up the bar with faggots applying

>> No.8635079

Not sure when you apply to the JET program, but isn't it sometime in the fall? You can learn a lot from now until then. Anyway, can't you be an ALT without knowing too much Japanese? It's only the other JET positions that require you to know a lot.

Forget about classes. Teach yourself. That's the quickest way.

No they don't. I know someone who was not given a job because they majored in Japanese. They don't want people affiliated with Japan at all.

That is why they ban people who study Japanese in college, or like Japanese culture.

This is unfortunately true, but it's also not a rule. There are plenty of people (5-6 a year in a program that graduates about 20) at my university who get an ALT position after having taken Japanese as a major (3 years of courses).

Still, they really are looking more for people who are outgoing and energetic with a healthy interest in Japan more so than basement dwellers who read eroge.

fuck japan, flip burgers, get money to import physical stuff.

you only want to go there for the animu/doujins, not because you have a yellow fever.

Not to make you feel like shit or panic, but remember that JET is intended as a starting point, as somewhere to move from. You should have a long term plan and some kind of goal for what you're going to do afterwards. This is one of the reasons liberal arts majors are often scorned.

>>8635144
Keep in mind they are expecting you to teach children. If you are someone who can't deal with a social work environment (both with the kids and the primary teacher), then you're not suited for JET. Most of the people I know are the kind of people who would go out and party on weekends, hang out in large groups, almost fraternity-like.

I'm aware of that, though my long term goal is to live in Japan. Scared to admit that though because I already know what's going to be said about that.

I'm social but I'm also not the type of person to go out and party on weekends if only because I'm overly cautious. I did some volunteer work last summer at a camp and all the kids loved me, I was perplexed because I didn't think I did anything special.

They often prefer people who do not know much Japanese, you were given bad information.

However, when they do the interview, it's just like any job interview. If you go in looking like shit, hoodie up, neckbeard displayed, stained sweatpants, and won't make eye contact, yes, your ass will never see Japan on their dime.

You need to at least put up the facade that you are outgoing, open-minded, curious about other cultures, at least semi-professional looking, and love children, but not in the /jp/ way. They need to look at you, and see someone who can assist the teacher in keeping the little mouthbreathers focused.
