Nah, its not heavy racism.

Like yeah, people will be like "lol dude wtf, its some white guy" especially if you're just some tourist, but the japanese people are really nice.

So long as you don't do something stupid they should at least treat you with some consideration.

But expect store clerks and ticket ushers and such to think you're just some stupid fucking foreigner.

By which I mean they'll automatically assume you can't speak japanese, if you try to order off a menu, they'll try to jesture for you to "point" at what you want, and instead of telling you the price of something, they'll type it into a calculator and show you -_-

If you simply show with a quick word exchange that you can speak Japanese it makes things easier, though.

Do you speak Japanese?

If yes try not to talk to salespeople, they'll talk your ear off.
The ones behind the counters are okay, you might have a 1 minute conversation but seeing as you're already buying shit they won't bother buttering you up.

If no expect everyone to be really awkward around you, some people take this as racism but I find they're just trying their hardest to find a way to communicate with you... Most Japanese suck at this in my experience. My host mother would rather just change the topic than try to explain a word I didn't know. NOT VERY HELPFUL.

Once I spoke english to a girl at '7&iholdings' (7/11) on accident and she just froze. I asked one of my Japanese classmates about it and he said she was probably trying her hardest to remember the english she was taught in elementary school and freaking out because she'd forgotten most of it.
I experienced very little racism as a tall white male. Only note worthy thing was that even though I'm considered 'skinny' in my own country and am of the perfect weight for someone of my age and height I was considered fat by the Japanese, some students made a game out of pinching anywhere I had a little bit of pudge, it really pissed me off but they apologised once they realised it actually bothered me.

No muggers on the train, people dont steal, people dont scam you, if you dropped your wallet or passport somewhere they would still be there on the next day and etc? As someone who has gone to Tokyo over the course of my life for family visits, here are some tips.

If you don't impede on anyone else life, they won't to you. It's more or less a mutual respect. Keep to yourself unless you NEED to bother others. People are willing to help. Japanese people are not as xenophobic as the internet says. Just don't be fucking obnoxious.

If you go to Akihabara, go to the backstreets, that is where you will find various doujin shops. Tora and Melon Books are on the main street. White canvas, Mandarake, and a lot of the ones which i don't know the names of are in the back streets.

Enjoy the arcades, it's a rare chance that you get to play someone you don't know then peer around the corner to see the guy who beat you. (Or vice versa)

In Tokyo, expect packed streets, use trains as your primary source of transportation, you will be getting a lot of looks, but that's because you look different, not because people have an underlying hate for you.

OP, more specific information would be nice. Where exactly are you going/ how many people are you going with? I might be able to suggest a few things which might be of itnerest

Not the guy you're responding to, but I spent about 8 months in Japan over the last year. Are you going to be buying a JR rail pass (you can only do this on a tourist visa)? If you are, I'd recommend trying to use it as much as you can and traveling a lot, because you can save fucktons of money (domestic travel is wicked expensive) while still seeing a lot. Tokyo is definitely really exciting, but it's good to get out and see places that aren't so crowded. There's plenty of very cool places around Kyoto/Nara that are worlds apart from Tokyo, and in that area you can also see Osaka and even go down to Kyushu and Shikoku if you feel like it.

Roppongi Skydeck is somewhere you want to go to. Google it. It's a great photo opportunity to capture the beautiful city at nightime.

As I said, Akihabara is somewhere you really want to go to. Don't be afraid to
venture into small stairwells which are beside shops in the back streets. Most of these lead to small second store shops which sell erogae, figures, and sorts. If you;'re a tall person, watch out. Many stairwells are short.

Shibuya has the first ever kaiten sushi restaurant. (The sushi places which rotate around the restaurant on a conveyer belt). Pretty cheap prices, 113 yen/ plate, and it had good quality. I don't remember the exact street, but it's on the street past the scrambled crossing, in between the baskin robins and HMV. If you really want to be a brave man, go inside 109. See what obscure fashion is popular in Shibuya at the moment. It's not really relevant to otaku culture, but it is an interesting experience.

The station right beside Akihabara called Okachimachi has a few streets of side shop markets. Really nice to pick up odds and ends, some clothing, and some street vendor food.

Ramen shops are everywhere. Most of them are pretty good. However, I'm posting my favorite one. It's not too out of the way, it's one station down from Akihabara, and a 10 minute walk from the station. This place specializes in using heavy tonkotsu broth. Disregard the search term, I just needed to use that to find the store.

Westerners in general are so hypersensitive to "racism" that it's scary. Just about any exchange between another race is racism, if you acknowledge race exists then it's racism, if you have a disagreement with someone of another race then it's racism. microwave/oven, rice cooker, hot pot thingy, wii, wii fit...
those I would let go for like 20% of what they cost
nice desk, and a nice chair

free books, some for japanese, some for computer stuff...

if you want the futons, do you have a way to take them with you? they are huge, in my luggage I can only fit one piece, as in, one cover only, so you would have to make a few trips.
