Feeling something suspicious about kigs with tails.

Caught a cold and did some unhealthy thinking in a fevered state, and suddenly it struck me that kigs are pretty much full body suits that allow the wearer to depict, pose, and to some extent function as an idealised and highly stylised version of an actual creature. I sort of think of them like extreme cosplays or "puppets" to an extent. The wearer is controlling an anime puppet, in a sense! But yeah people have likened these to fursuits before. Fursuits are just cosplay of animal characters, either way. (be them existing or original characters), so the community does have parallels in that there's also a lot of original character creation, probably because it really lends itself to that. You can't cosplay an original character as well because no one will know who you are, but if you are clearly an anime character, original or not, people will still understand that cosplay is happening.

Though, improvement topics are broad, but at the same time easily noticeable and categorized. Some people need to lose weight, get a better camera, compose and light their photos better, get a better costume/mask/zentai, pose better or take more flattering pics, be less repetitive, etc etc. It's a mix and match of those things, and sometimes one thing is done well while another isn't. There's also a level of subjectivity in favored mask styles or performance styles. Better to just call for critiques than to ask for a ranking.

I've already given crits on mask makers before, I don't know how well I'd do about individual performers though, especially since when it comes to many, it's already obvious to everyone what needs to be improved. I also tend to be more willing to critique performers in person, since when it comes to making masks I feel weird pointing out flaws in what took a lot of money and time to make. Flawed logic, I know. I'd rather they do better for next time, but with performers it's a bit less of an investment to pick up the slack.

Maybe it'd be better to try to pick the more subtle trappings that mid-level players fall into? But, whatever you'd like.

One thing I'll say is that the best thing many people could do would be to light their images better. Nothing ups the creepy/crappy factor like low lighting and grain everywhere. Photography is a big investment and often an unforeseen expense if you get into kig for the pretty pictures, so you have to work best with what you have.

Yeah definitely. As much as people hate to admit it, size -immediately- effects how the entire presentation looks. I know a girl who went from chubby to super thin in half a year, it's possible! Too many people just give up entirely.
It's really hard to talk about this sort of thing without sounding like some sort of "no-fun-allowed" fat-shamer, but if you're REALLY concerned about looking your best, your body plays a huge factor that needs to be considered and it's not something you can't work on.
Though it really can depend on what someone is even in the hobby for. If you just want to run around in an anime mask, or fufill some fantasies, that's cool. But if you want to be a sexy or cute anime girl (or guy) in pretty photos and really -wow- people, your figure is one of THE most important things. So lose weight and pad where you need it and do it properly.
I was going to include the cosplaying aspect in the "just have fun" category, but if someone is going as far to wear a mask to obtain a perfect likeness, the body needs to match too.

It's just not really constructive. Most people who are or look overweight, know that already. Telling them just makes them feel bad, and not in a way that makes them want to work to fix the problem. There are a few people that don't know it, but telling them will just make them freak out and raise drama, which makes this thread suck.

I honestly know very, very little about cosplay, masks, posing, and photography so I don't feel like I could really do anything to help. The only thing I have any idea about is how to diet safely and fairly easily, but even then I'm not really qualified to write an article.

There would also be a huge amount of overlap in advice with any cosplay specific wiki, the only difference is it'd have a zentai and mask pages.

Which of these attitudes are you calling Japanese? Pic related; Neko is awesome and one of the most pivotal Japanese players, especially in the early days, and especially in terms of establishing east/west relations.

No one told her to shut her site down, not in Japan or America. Yeah her costumes were sub-par even for the day, but she was fun to talk to and be around, and she had fun. She still wears some of the early Dolphin masks sometimes, and no one gives a fuck. It's as much about how you carry and view yourself as how you look. There are plenty of people who have perfect figures and high-quality costumes and still look and act like shit.

Also pic related. Hitomi's got a dozen decent costumes, a great bodysuit with a good color match, a SIGMA mask, has the right figure and knows how to pad. High technical execution across the board. But I don't know anyone here who really likes her pictures or follows her blog. There's no personality.

Not that poster but actually doing things. I think the biggest mistake people fall into is just doing shoots of "Hey look I'm a kigurumi" instead of something like "Hey look I'm making toast".

Basically don't just stand around in a kig and do nothing, that's great for showing off that you just got a kig or new outfit but it doesn't add to the character you are doing. I'm not saying it's bad to do this type of shoot but if it's all you ever do you'll never get any personality.

The US community isn't small. It's grown a significant amount over the years. Masks use to be hard to come by. Hardly anyone would sell to the US. Now buying a mask is as easy as getting a paypal account. Not everyone has a eye for good mask craftsmanship, photography, fashion and shape wear let alone the knowledge needed for wig care, marketing or staying in character when doing kigurumi.

Wouldn't it be better to focus and teach the few rather than trying to panhandle for gold? Mentoring and enriching someones kigurumi experience would seem more important than taking the religion route of spreading the gospel of kigurumi.
