I've been actually waiting for this (new) thread to come for a couple of days now. I hate intruding to post in already long threads...

I have started playing touhou games for the first time ever, like 3 or 4 days ago. I had no previous experience whatsoever with danmaku games, so I thought even easymodo was hard (go ahead and laugh)
After some training though, I have improved A LOT, however I still can't manage to beat the games without continuing, even in easy mode. Oh and now I've been training in normal mode too, but it's not like I've played the games that much...
Touhou は、ほんとにたのしいですね!

I've gotten touhous 6,7,8,9 and 10, but 8 and specially 9 had very weird gameplays, so I've stuck with mainly 6 and 7 for now...

pic related, why is sakuya so superior to the other touhous, gameplay-wise?

Feels great to be somewhat part of the community now... :3

I'm curious, /jp/, where exactly do you look on the screen when you've got a barrage of faster, smaller bullets coming at you?
For example, Satori's "Border of Wave and Particle".
I find that I usually die on these cards because I get so panicky and dodge terribly.

>> No.8602134

>>8602102
I usually just stare at the middle of the screen, without focusing on one single point.
This may need some training, but for me it's essential in spellcards like these, because it moves too fast for my eyes to capture anything.
You should just try a bit (maybe on a lower difficulty) and see which method suits you best.

It's inside her bullet spawning area, yes. It's to the right of Sakuya, so close you'll probably hit her a few times before you find the right spot.

Eternal Meek isn't really a hard card, it just requires to specific brain skill of mental danmaku projection of predicting in your head where each bullet is going to go and where your character is which not everybody has.

It's pretty much the ultimate test of dodging without looking at your character and only at bullets.

>> No.8602386

One of the biggest things about Eternal Meek is that it's Stage 6, and if I've got any bombs left I'm always like "fuck it, I'm not chancing this". That goes for all of Remilia's spell cards as well though, except for maybe if I get a lucky break on the Vampire Illusion.

Red ones give you a fragment of life if you destroy them and another one if you fill them.
Green ones give you a full Bomb if you fill them and a bomb fragment if you destroy them.
Blue ones give you a X8 score multiplier if you fill them, 4X if you hal fill them and 2X if you just destroy them without filling them.
Finally Rainbow UFOs transform all point blue tokens into power red tokens and viceversa. If you destroy them you get a colour changing UFO to collect, If you fill them you get another.

People already have scoring paths made up for these games, it's silly to not copy them, and I don't think anybody will be able to come up with better paths without many years of practice. You can watch these paths, copy them, and once you get the skill, improve on them. Plus, you might be missing some extremely small, yet simple detail that you would never figure out without watching a superplay.

Watching people better than you play the game will give you a much better idea on how to play, and this goes for any genre, really.

At a high level of play everyone watches replays, therefore you don't gain an unfair advantage by watching replays, therefore watching replays is not cheating.

You can use them with a program called hourglass.

I never got it working myself, and stage practice was always good enough for me. I only ever used save states in MAME and for the PC-98 touhou games.

And honestly, it makes me infinitely confused seeing somebody 2-ALL DOJWL, perfecting hibachi and all, but struggle with Hisoutensoku/SWR after hundreds of hours of consistent practice. Ok
On the stage you do a lot of mistakes. For example, just before Chen you waste 2 bombs that are not necesary by any means, the 4 fairies barrage can be avoided just by standing in the middle and shooting, and the one that comes after that is just moving backwards but no as fast as you did, just slow.

During Chen you shouldn't need any bombs, All her spells and non spells are very easy.Blue Oni Red Oni is just streaming as you are doing but more slow. You should learn how to dodge Flying Bishamonten, it just consists of going through her close turn barrage so you don't get trapped.

After Chen the stage is very easy and you do a silly dead for moving too much, PCB extra / phantasm is one of the most sidestepping stages I have faced, you should only side step, faster or slower but only side step.

During Ran now I didn't saw many mistakes aside from:

- Charming Siege From All Sides, you should stand closer or you are going to get clipped.
-Princess Tenko -Illusion-, Just do diagonal upward dodge, diagonal downward dodge, diagonal downward dodge again, and repeat.

That makes it for the playthrough since it was your first time playing the other cards.
Now some other tips.

1 - This is the most important, stop using the 4 bomb option from the menu, turn it back to defaul or it´s not a 1CC/ legit clear, same goes for lives.
2 - Stream more, you hug the floor like 80% of the time and that takes a lot of movility out of you.
3 - Graze more, you will get more score which is always good and you will also get more lives.
4 - Get away from Sakuya A, she is easy to play, sure, but she is awful at scoring and also her bombs are crap.

/ constructive criticism.

Having 4 bombs is a property of Sakuya. You can't change this in the options.

Graze does absolutely nothing for lives.

Sakuya has 4 bombs by default
>3 - Graze more, you will get more score which is always good and you will also get more lives.
You get extends from collecting certain amount of point items in pcb. And on the games that give you extends based on your score you'll get them all in a 1cc survival run (for example in MoF you'll get all the extends even if you bomb literally every spellcard in the game).

I like to think that this boss is a cruel joke by the developers. The pattern is designed to be extremely brutal, requiring the most twitch dodging until pachi, and he's positioned at a critical time; If you bomb him or die, you don't get the maximum bonus for an entire stage, because stage 1 doesn't have any bombs.

>> No.8650892

Indeed, I should probably use save states so I can actually have some practice with both the 1-5 and 1-6 boss. And so I can actually learn the second loop instead of bomb spamming my way through 2-1, 2-2, and 2-3. I actually think ura suicide bullets are even more of a cruel joke to be honest.

It also doesn't help that I've been really inconsistent recently, dying to absolutely trivial bullshit like the teleporting ships in 1-3, and 1-4 boss drill pattern. I died five times in a row to 1-3 ships before I got the run pictured above, and I dropped a shit load of chains before 1-3, which lead to even more restarting. That's just one of the things about this game. When you get better at it, you will learn to deal with it. It will never completely go away, because you will always be doing something you aren't quite good enough to get just yet. I still have heart attacks when I get to Byakuren in some of my handicapped runs. That run in my picture took me months to get, now it is trivial. One day, getting that 1cc will be trivial to you. Just keep practicing. If you had a lot of resources, you will always at least know that you had a great chance at it. You know that you are close, which is much better than not being anywhere near the goal. If you keep trying, you are sure to get it right. Then it will all be worth it. If it's too hard at the moment, go and practice in another game. When you come back, you will be amazed at how you breeze through the patterns. You will eventually get good enough that you don't need to practice, and you already know everything.

It's made even worse by the fact that Kanako and Queen Bee the third are some of the easiest final bosses in their respective games. I don't get how I can consistently clear DDP's first loop, but still get wrecked in an easy game like MoF, maybe I'm underestimating it or something.

Since I got my CRT, I always played in fullscreen mode. When I was playing on my LCD, played windowed and used a program called Sizer to adjust the window. There are many pickup thingies in all of the games:

The red ones give you shot power. They give you +1 power in most games, but give +5 power in MoF/SA.

The blue items give you points. These are usually not relevant to gameplay, but they can help you get powerups in the earlier games. They also affect rank in EoSD/PCB.

There are also things like ufo tokens, green items, divine spirits, cherry items, time orbs, and other powerups which vary by their respective game. You can look all of that up in the wiki.
