Can we have a discussion about Touhou official works?

For starter, chapter 7 of WaHH is just recently translated. What's your opinion on it?

Feel free to talk about other official works if you want.

Yeah the thing with Suika made it all but certain now.

If she got exposed, her plan would come apart, since it relies on manipulating Reimu with her hermit cred, but I think she's also very afraid of ruining their relationship. >Kasen essentially is Ibaraki Douji, an Oni.

Gee, I wonder why she could be saying that.

And the purpose of her hermit facade should be obvious: she's too scared to interact with humans unless they don't know she's a youkai.

Think about it. Oni don't lie. Suika is the only one we know of who would lie even a little (and she rarely does). And here we have Kasen, who has completely thrown away her honor as an Oni, so much so that she constantly lies about who and what she is, and what she thinks about a wide variety of things. And her only real goal is to cut ties between the world above and the world below.

She's given up everything in order to try and protect her friends.

"I'm a hermit" is a gigantic lie. Not only that, but she's already shown that when she preaches to people, she's either just trying to look like a hermit, or trying to secure peace/get people to stay away from the underground. She's incredibly transparent about it too. Oni just don't make good liars.

>>8600891
She's not timid. Overcome by past trauma, perhaps, but she's not timid at all. Did you even read the chapters were she dealt with Komachi and those spirits?

>>8600896
True. However, doesn't her motive for peacekeeping look transparent to anyone else? For example, in the latest chapter she wants to keep humans from continuing their tradition of youkai extermination just so that, if the humans and Oni were to come into contact again (which has already started happening), the humans won't brutally kill her friends like they used to.

She doesn't seem to realize that this tradition continues only in name though. But then again, Reimu does a good job of acting like she's really exterminating youkai.

>Oni were constantly tricked and killed by humans in the past.
>Oni seem to be traumatized by this, enough to cause them to throw away a great deal of their pride in order to flee underground and stay there for hundreds of years.

What crap are you taking out of your ass?

Oni were enemies of the humans because oni used to ''play'' with them and kill them, this angered humans and repelled them into the underground, they made a decree that prohibited oni from leaving the underground. Over time, only the tradition stayed, and eventually Suika escaped to become friends with a human, Reimu.

That thing about Kasen wanting to restore peace does seem about right though.

>> No.8600942

>>8600929

Oni were never prohibited from leaving the underground. Suika is always making sure everyone knows she's an Oni, and just walks around up there plain as day. Why is she able to do that?

And I know very well that Oni were great enemies of humans and extremely dangerous in the past. However, that doesn't mean they enjoyed being tricked and killed when they valued honor and honesty above all else. Obviously, they wouldn't be able to trust humans any longer. And you know, as far as canon texts go, it's always talking about Oni kidnapping humans, not necessarily killing them.

On the contrary, I seem to recall something in PMiSS saying that a human kidnapped by an Oni should be wary of being accidentally killed because the Oni are simply too strong for their own good. It doesn't seem to be saying that they're in danger of being killed intentionally.

Yes, that's how the humans saw things. However, the Oni probably saw things from a completely different perspective.

I doubt they saw things in black and white morality like that, for one thing. Most youkai don't seem to see things in black and white, like humans do.

After all, humans naturally work under the premise of "killing is bad" but youkai are just looking for tasty food and want to be feared (all youkai naturally want to be feared to some extent, after all. for example, just look at Nue's dialogue in TH12, where she states that "it can't be helped" that she scared humans because that's what youkai do).

自分を退治に来る人間も少ない = few humans coming to exterminate them

So the translation is fairly accurate. I think the original is trying to say that the oni preferred the former state of oni/human conflict and didn't like the new, peaceful Gensokyo.

Read up on the history of Gensokyo please... It's only been 126 years since the place was sealed off by the Hakurei Barrier. Before that point, there was no need for the spell card rules. On the other hand, the Oni have been gone from the world above ground for hundreds of years. Nobody even remembers how to exterminate them anymore.

>>8601030
You're going to have to revise that a bit, because it's simply ridiculous.

If you want to quote the Yama, remember that she's also always saying that everyone has their own role in life and that it is a sin not to act according to that role.

And now you are saying that, according to the Yama, it is a sin whether they act according to it or not, because if they don't they're breaking the above rule and if they do they're breaking the one you just stated. Something's got to give here. That's why I'm quite certain you just made that up. If the Yama said that to someone, she either said it to someone who wasn't a youkai, or she had adjusted her definition of the "role of youkai" to account for the fact that youkai in Gensokyo don't actively eat humans.

However, before Gensokyo was created as a place for them to escape to, they definitely did. Why does nobody understand that, for youkai, it's in their very being to be the enemies of humans? It's what they're known for, it's why humans write legends about them in the first place. Youkai are youkai because they attack humans, and humans naturally taste great to them.

New guy. PMiSS says in that very sentence that as of hundreds of years ago, the numbers of Oni gradually decreased, and when the Hakurei Border was formed they just all decided to leave. Simply put, Oni would challenge humans to contests because it was fun. Naturally though, the Oni would win all the time. As the victor, they would kidnap the humans, and probably eat or otherwise kill them. Obviously, since the humans had no other way of defeating the Oni, they resorted to underhanded tactics to win, and often in the same way tricked Oni into situations where they could be exterminated. While this evened out the playing field somewhat and could have led to a better relationship between the two, the Oni hated lying and scheming and so left the world where they couldn't have any more fun. By the time the Border was created (probably not explicitly because the Border was created), they were mostly gone, and the Tengu took over the mountain.

Oni were pretty damn vicious though; it's pretty terrible that all of them would leave basically because they couldn't do whatever they wanted anymore. In the first place, they would start challenges that were near-impossible for them to lose and were butthurt when the playing field was evened. Suika, being one of the only Oni to not give a damn about outright killing humans, thinks that Oni and humans could reconcile if both sides stop being faggots to each other. What with the current spell card rules, it's probably more likely than ever before.

Wow. I've read the article at least two times in the past, and apparently the detail that "the Oni didn't actually disappear altogether until Gensokyo was sealed off" never really hit me. I guess I'm just an idiot, thanks.

Also I really doubt the Oni would be so quick to kill a human if they were honest. They may be vicious to those who they see as enemies, but if they perceive someone as a friend, then you could be absolutely certain they would never betray you. Oni really do make great friends, because they adhere so strongly to their code of honor, and yet they're still very easy-going (aside from their pride and the way they stick to traditions).

The contests may be unfair, but nobody would challenge someone to a contest that they had a good chance of losing, because that would be stupid. Would this mean the fox disguises as Marisa not only when talking with Reimu, but also on her regular schedule as well?

Could all the Marisas we have ever seen be youkai who only pretend to be Marisa?

Apologies, Yukito-san. I haven't spoken with Hong in all that time either and, sadly, I have no editing experience whatsoever.

If it's any consolation, I've actually finished translating two of the three untranslated chapters, they just... haven't been edited/released.

Sadly, yes. I've got a small stockpile of chapters/doujins I've finished translating that Hong just hasn't actually edited/released yet. That and I don't have any access to UMAD's website. Hong pretty much handled all of that. I just translated.

A quick check shows those two OSP chapters and... wait, where'd that Kaguya doujin I translated go? Ugh. It was a nice little doujin about Kaguya becoming the maid at the SDM. Where'd I put my translation for that? Hrm... Anyway, the majority of it is Baki chapters.

Personally, I enjoyed working on the non-H stuff a bit more than the H stuff a lot of the time. Harder to translate, but less tedious (especially since Hong liked having the sound effects translated and anyone that's ever read an H doujin can imagine how repetitive that can get). If I could get an editor to give me work to do, I'd probably be a little more productive. I have a hard time getting myself to do... well, anything, unless someone else is expecting it. Hong was definitely the driving force behind that, until... well, he wasn't.

...Oh, and here's my Master Mima's Daydreams translation that's no long necessary. Funny. I had the translation done for this one weeks before the other was released. Sigh.

>But she's been like that from the very beginning of CoLA. If anything, most of the "fanon" you speak of was based on it in the first place.

Not quite, fanon ignores Reimu's whole duty-based actions and just goes for ''she wants lots of money to get stuff''. CoLA itself shows how Reimu does not have a proper desire or even knowledge of the monetary values for luxurious uses, according to Kourin.

Fanon mostly does Reimu either doing extorsion or doing actions in exchange of money, the whole food poverty thing also branches from that, none of which the true Reimu does. She says that she does not get any reward for solving incidents so she pretty much gave up and started befriending those whom she's tasked to brutalize and even gives them her own food, i.e: her parties, most relative example being this manga's CH.8.

Akyuu says that Reimu and all of her ancestors' job was to expand the shrine's grounds in order to be able to attract more followers, this is done by gathering donations, which is hard considering the above mentioned youkai-befriending (the reason that is mentioned to be the main one behind Reimu's lack of followers) and the fact that Reimu says that she finds shameful to go to the village and ask for donations in BAiJR.
