I can understand his hate of Touhou, but if he likes anime and manga, I can't really grasp why he'd hate VNs and figures. I'm not really a fan of either but I'd think anyone could see the appeal, or see that they're just different forms of media.

I imagine he probably disliked them because of the fanbase. Or was joking to some extent.

It really makes me wonder...

Inevitably, everyone who is passionate about Japanese games/manga or whatever will try to learn Japanese. /jp/ was created in 2008. The people who started learning in 2008 and 2009 should be more or less fluent by now. The people who started learning in 2010 and 2011 should be getting there.

Assuming they didn't stop browsing /jp/... eventually, the board will be full of people who can read Japanese with no effort, and this will increase the amount of translated materials we get each year.

Who knows... by 2016, we might be getting one fully translated VN a month.

New userbase, new generations. Look at those survey threads. Granted they're not representative of /jp/ since a lot of bored lurkers from other boards post in them, but the average age is surprisingly low. Usually about 19-20. I'm not naive enough to say kids don't visit /a/, but chances are these people haven't been on 4chan for more than a couple of years.

Anyway, I first decided I wanted to learn Japanese when I was 12. I looked up some hiragana charts and practised writing them. That is the furthest I have gotten, and that was 15 years ago.

Well my basis is the quality and volume of the posts. You could post about earth shaking news relevant to everyone on /jp/ and it would get a lot of replies, but from no more than a couple dozen people. Make a survey thread, you get 100 unique posts within a relatively short timespan. Many of them quite clearly from off-boarders, since they use stupid memes. And post in survey threads. Like LOSERS.

ARE YOU KIDDING ME?!
BACK IN THE DAY WE HAD LIKE MAYBE 3 TRANSLATED VN, AND THAT WAS IT. And we all liked them.
Now there are hundreds of them, the fan translation group is huge. Those threads that list all the VN being translated blows my mind every single time I see it.

I remember that there was a time when I honestly thought to myself "Well I pretty much read every VN that was translated, that's it I guess. Maybe a year from now another will be translated."
And now there are so many I get overwhelmed and hardly read any. I can just pick and choose those which cater to my interests.

I can get anime that is still airing translated in under one day, that also blows my mind. We have come a long way.

I practice Japanese so that I too may one day become a part of the translation machine. It's pretty amazing.

I don't want to sound like a weeaboo but they didn't really have the adult themes and engaging stories that some VNs have. Most adventure games were designed for 11-12 year olds and were not meant to invoke any deep feelings.

I'm sure some guys here had to deal with only having True Love and Nocturnal Illusion. Back when you could buy Hentai at Blockbuster, next to the Dreamcast games.
Most translations back then were official ones.

Brave Soul was translated in 2003.
Back then, the gameplay was fucking amazing for an eroge. It was one of my favorites.
Recently I recommend it for a good game for beginners and was told the gameplay and graphics looked too old.

I did mean around 2002-2004. You would get most of your stuff from official Peach Princess and G-Collection translations. Obviously I didn't buy them even back then, but that was more because I was a kid still with my parents. I bought all my video games back then but I couldn't find a way to buy hentai games. Well, by "bills like ACTA" I meant legislation against copyright infringement that would require knowledge to get around if it were implemented the way our governments want. If such legislation were to be implemented successfully, as they seem to be pushing, I would doubt that the status quo would remain in place for pirating.

Especially for translators; no offense, but you sound like you think they can do/know everything themselves. I don't know if that's what you really think, but I'm fairly certain most of them just translate what is passed to them. I am a translator myself(not VNs) and I'm more or less just a cog in the wheel. You don't need any knowledge but Japanese, and I know many current translators are teenagers(you can tell just by the way they write). At the end of the day things aren't going to get translated if the translators don't feel safe, and I refuse to believe that most translators are particularly tech literate(if that's a point you strongly disagree with then we'd might as well not have this discussion).

I won't deny that as long as IRC stays as a safe option they aren't going to stop anything, however.

I agree with what you're saying, but consider this:
The lobbyists are stupid. They don't know what they're doing. Senator John doesn't know the difference between the Bill and the Internet. The Bill authors may use some technical jargon, but it's still far too narrow or far too wide to have any effect. They could ban BitTorrent, IRC, even all unauthorized HTTP traffic, but a week later every teenager on YouTube would know how to use FTP. I have no doubt that translators aren't the most tech-savvy people in the world, and I didn't mean to imply that the people who translate are also the people fiddling with hex editors and extraction tools. But even then, they know how to use IRC and FTP and whatever else. They know how to hide their real life identity online. Even if some law made it so complicated to pirate that it could only be done by some crazy wizardry that involved routing your traffic through twelve different countries and sending files using IP Over Avian Carriers, groups like the EFF would write a program to automate it by the end of the month.
People are smart and fast. Companies are dumb and slow, but unfortunately very powerful.

I think /jp/ was fun when suigin, arc, BOOF and such were still hanging around. I wonder if they still lurk anonymously or if they just grew tired of all the crap we like to obssess over and started doing something productive with their life. I hope so.

Goddamn, it really does feel like /jp/ was created way more recently like that, but at the same time the board feels very different than it did in 2008.

No. Just no.
BOOF was a fucking disaster of a poster. I've never felt such a disgust against any other tripfag than that sack of dumb shit. Even the pre-captcha spam script had more intellect in it than him.
