I watched kampfer half way through. The first episode annoyed me but then I started laughing at how lazy and formulaic the plot was. It's like they didn't even try. The protagonist can transform into a girl for some reason! He fights other random weapon using magical girls, because! He's in a school filled with beautiful girls who are in love with the girl version of him, because! He gets put in skimpy outfits, because!

I wrote a Wing Commander fanfic when I was in grade school more subtle than kampfer. It was just a piece of paper with a circle and some triangles shooting at the circle. I labeled the circle "Deth Star"

Except they don't. They're not even done well. I get that people must like them how they are, but they look very shoddy. Are they made out of foam or something? Why not use a better material? Why do the faces always look so derpy? Why do they add depth to noses and lips but make everything else look flat?

The net result is a shoddily-made, uncanny valley mess that I cannot fathom why people like. Again I don't deny these have an audience, but I can only assume you're the kind of people who like "freaky" things like members of "alternative" subcultures.

I can't tell if you're a troll or not.

They're made out of fiber reenforced plastic, (a strong, light material) and cost hundreds of dollars to make. One of the more popular makers has a career in making anime figurines. Many kigurumi costumes have hair that's styled many times better than most cosplayers, and very nice costumes. If you honestly think they look shoddy, I don't think I can say anything more to convince you, but I think you are not looking hard enough here. Have you ever even seen an anime figurine before? The flatness also varies by maker and how they choose to go about the cheeks and such.

>> No.8575645

>>8575597
Not trolling. I just genuinely think these look cheap (though I gathered they were expensive to make and buy) and freaky. To be honest I don't like the majority of figs either, but I'm sure I'm in the minority. I only own about ten.

I will admit the hair is nice though. Has a very natural or at least anime-ish look to it. I just think the faces are creepy as hell at worst and poor adaptations at best. Though I can concede it's a matter of taste, since you guys obviously like this sort of thing.

>> No.8575704

>>8575645
I'm not into alternative or freaky anything, by the way. I was drawn to it because I like anime figurines and cosplay, and I consider it a cool extension of both.

Maybe you consider it freaky because they have to have forward-facing eyes with neutral expressions? Though, if someone is predispositioned to fear masks, there's not really much to say after that. I don't know. A lot of times though, people will have a "generic model" altered to look like the character by changing the eyes and hair, so that may be where it looks off.

But like, things like the miku at the top? it looks almost just like her actual character art if you ask me, though the hair could be better.

I think way too many people settle for "poor adaptions" though. I have to have it looking just like the character. Face shape, eye style, everything. I can't understand how people can buy say, a Wyu-made mask and not even ask to change it from her usual eye style. Compare the awesome Riza earlier to this one. It could at least looked ANYTHING like her had they not gone with eyes that don't look like hers at all.
(maybe this will at least add perspective?)

One's individual feelings about Wyu aside, it's just a mystery to me why someone would shell out the serious money to get something that doesn't look like the character at all. Then again, I know people that save art that looks like crap, so maybe they just plain can't tell. If you have an OC and like the maker's style then okay sure, but I wouldn't want a "cosplay" type mask on an Sigma Ena base (see: that one particular Tsukasa) or a Wyu base or anything like that. It's just too obvious. I think Nukopan's generics are the only ones that really work decently. Maybe Dolphin's new style, but only for "modern" moe style characters. It's just too bad sigma originals just aren't possible for a westerner.

Yeah it seems that way. It's probably much easier to just go for the ones that speak english. That, and a lot of masks are bought for -personal- reasons and never see the light of a camera once mailed, so looking perfect isn't important to them. I can't imagine how many Enas are sold in Japan just for bedroom purposes.
But that's neither here nor there, since there's plenty of people who go public with less-than-great masks. If they made their own that's a little different, but when you have the choice on who to spend 1000 bucks on...

I ramble though. I'd love a custom sigma too. There was actually one on yahoo.co.jp recently but even the seller only wanted to ship locally. At least kigurumi doesn't discriminate against age, maybe one day the doors will open.

I guess the biggest issue is the language barrier. That and the fact that Sigma is very paranoid about sending masks overseas. I also wonder how many Enas have been made. Does Sigma keep all the moulds of the custom masks they make? Having a documentary on the production of a custom Sigma mask would be awesome.

I've also been thinking of the performer's age. Is the current generation of dollers going to be replaced by a younger generation? How old are the veterans? How much longer would kigurumi be around?

Looking a decade ago, it's changed quite a bit. What will the next decade show us?

Yeah. Even people that WILL sell to westerners can be scary to approach, because you may need to compose something legible in Japanese, and if you can't find someone to translate, reading a response would be even more hopeless.

I wonder how much Sigma recycles, actually. I understand an artist's style always shows through, but I get a feeling that maybe some customs are still altered from a base model. And yeah, a video or something would be super cool.

I think the hobby is only going to grow from here. I saw a post on /cgl/ a while back that was saying that kigs were "all over" at some cons like it was old news!
I'm bracing for a serious influx of younger people and newbies. When I first found the community, it was mostly older folk and pretty tightly knit. Now I feel like it's impossible to escape the perils of younger internet users. I'm just hoping that the small amount of talented, cool people that come along will be worth it. Who knows, maybe we'll get pro sculptors and cosplay accessory makers to start responding to the demand. Hell there's that helmet-making guy that asks questions in here sometimes.

The uncanny valley is traditionally described as "very close to human, but not quite, therefore disturbing" This includes corpses, love dolls, and The Last Express.

I do not consider anime characters to be anything close to human, so I'm not bothered at all. The idea of masks and mascot characters also don't bother me, nor do clowns. I believe the revulsion some people have to kigurumi characters is actually just an aversion to people in masks, mistaken for the "uncanny valley". I just see them as cute anime characters, so it's no different than looking at Idolm@ster models or something like that.

Of course there's some poorly-made ones I find creepy-looking, but that's about it.

The thing with SIGMA is that they take payments through the Japanese banking system, which is notoriously insular. It's a real hassle to transfer money from an overseas bank account, so they require you to have a Japanese bank account before you can get the mask.

(Well, the actual requirement is that you are "staying in Japan for the entire length of time that is required to produce your mask", but considering these masks take over a month to make, in that case you are more than likely to have a bank account and residential address anyway.)

Are there any answers to these questions? I would certainly like to know what the age demographic is at in the West

Odette is the biggest FAIL kigurumi I know. The masks he/she makes look bad. They can't even make a Japanese mask look good.

I was never one for bunny outfits, but coordinated costumes + relevant scenery is a very nice touch.
