the reason the us helped south korea was because they believed in containment. they thought a us/russia(china) proxy war in korea could contain communism from spreading. red scares were spreading like wildfires so people honestly wanted to go to war against an idea. korea has always been and always will be a vessel for the desires of more ambitious nations

korea is incredibly modern, they didnt even adopt the hangul alphabet until about 100 years ago, and it took forever to become mainstream. up until then they just used chinese. there's still chinese everywhere. they have nice cities though, very kind people
