Do places like Hinamizawa exist anywhere in America? A small town, with no (or few) paved roads, out in the middle of nowhere, in the middle of a forest, perhaps surrounded by mountains. No loud noises of the big, or even moderately sized city, no bright lights drowning out the stars...

As far as I can tell, the only "small towns" like that are basically farm towns with a mile between every building, and all of them are located in the bible belt. I don't want that (especially the bible belt part), I want a small, but closely-knit village.

Or do happy little villages only exist in Japan?

>> No.8537250

what, so you want to be demoned away anytime soon?

>> No.8537257

Speaking of japan and small towns. Apparently there is no demand for furusato houses and you can buy one for a few grand. You could technically own a small town worth of houses for a years worth of work. Id like to do it, problem is visa and stuff.

>> No.8537258

You should look for a country with mountains where they build houses close like that in the valleys.

I live in Europe, but in my country it's the same, basically no villages like that. The people in the countryside here tend to live quite far from each other as well. Maybe some middle-European country?

Dude. I live in an apartment building with THE most gossipy people in the fucking world. Recent example:
- My neighbor came over to borrow some tea bags.
- This one neighbor who doesn't like me or my mom gets all nasty with us, insisting that we were dealing drugs (we don't).
- Someone overhears this, tells another neighbor, who in turn tells the woman my mom babysits for that we were dealing drugs.
- The woman calls up my mom, and asks if this is true. We tell her it's bullshit and everything is fine.
- Mom tells her friend about the situation.
- It comes back to my mom that her friend had told someone, who told someone, who told this other friend of my mom's that she was fired from babysitting because she's a drug dealer.
- We insist that no, this is entirely bullshit.
- That person that we just told it was bullshit to tells the person who told them about it that it was bullshit.
- Somehow this gets back around to us that our friend (the last person we spoke to) said that we were drug dealers.
- We call them and they confirm that they said no such thing.

ALL OF THIS SHIT
OVER FUCKING TEA BAGS
AND NONE OF IT WAS TRUE

Alaska is a very boring state. The free handouts are nice but aren't going to amount to much more than a month's salary. No taxes are alright, but it really doesn't matter given how much more expensive everything is here(according to many of my acquaintances). Still, it's a hell of a lot better than nothing.

But there really is nothing to do. Competitive online gaming is bad due to lag, competitive offline gaming is lame because the communities are small and there's nobody good besides one player, the internet is monopolized and there is nothing faster than a slow DSL which has unlimited bandwidth. GCI has a complete monopoly on fast internet here.

That being said, if you like the outdoors or and/or are OK with either being gouged for internet or dealing with slow speed and bandwidth caps, it's not a bad place to live.

A mountainous area in Japan is a hell of a lot different from Alaska. We're an entire nation's distance from the rest of the nation, and we have the lowest population in the entire nation despite having the largest area last time I checked. That's also part of why things are more expensive here in general. I might also mention that a large percentage of our population is natives who don't know and don't really care about the internet.

Amongst the beautiful landscape of Alaska, nestled in the snowy mountains lies an isolated Victorian mansion. It's occupants are a quiet, friendly bunch from a place called /jp/ who like to keep to themselves and talk about their favorite visual novels and Touhous.

But during the 30 days of night that comes by every year in the northern plains, as the soft blue night blankets the landscape and the beautiful stars and aurora borealis dance in the sky for an entire month on end, a scream is heard and a dead body of one of our dearest friends shows up in the foyer. One hidden among us has gone mad and plans to bring us all to a one way trip to Gensokyo!
Not only that, but they have cut all outside communications off, cut our internet cables, and slashed the gas tanks of our cars. We are now stuck, isolated in our own little world. Even the maid is suspect.

The fucking culprit since it took so long for that dumbass detective to find out.

That kind of thing happens up North in Sweden and Alaska and such because of the Earth's tilt.
That's probably why they are all depressed.

I remember this one Conan episode where the same thing happened.

It turned out that the fat guy actually wasn't fat, so he was the murderer.

Why not just make it an island? Have the only boat off the island get sunk by the culprit and set up the story so that there would be no reason for anyone to assume that people were on the island.

And then after like 2 people die, some dumbass tries to jump off the island and swim to shore, but because it's fucking Alaska, he dies of hypothermia before he can even get out of their sight, much less make it to shore.

Eh, yeah, he's outdated, but I like his ideas about humanity as a whole.

btw, wasn't Jung a disciple of Freud?
>>8537659
That is a good idea. I kinda get Umineko vibes from it though since it involves explosives and killing people in a certain manner though, but it is a good idea.

Or you could go with the first one if you want, I'm just saying that what matters the most is if it was fun writing the mystery for you.
>>8537657
I'm not trying to ruin the idea, I'm just saying a little something here and there.

Feel free to ignore me.

WHAT IF THE DETECTIVE WAS THE CULPRIT ALL ALONG?!

>> No.8537687

>>8537678
That's a good idea, except make it so that the guy who tries to swim to shore was actually the real murderer (he committed suicide or something, I don't know). The rest of the murders happen out of paranoia and self-defense.

You're not getting that anywhere but possibly the far north where there is no internet(as far as we're concerned).

Also, it comes with a good 30 days or so of daytime around June, and that happens even in southern Alaska. Winters have long nights, summers have exceptionally long or unending days(only go to dusk, not night).

>> No.8537686

>>8537670
Oh but wait, then it turns out that the last person that got killed was the culprit, they survived and ran away, leaving the detective to kill the guy that defended himself against the murderer. Or the detective was killing people in his sleep all along etc etc.

4. The detective himself, or one of the official investigators, should never turn out to be the culprit. This is bald trickery, on a par with offering some one a bright penny for a five-dollar gold piece. It's false pretenses.

Are we knox or dine?
More importantly, does the writer want to follow these rules at all?

Sure, a set of rules would be able to streamline the creation of a story very well, but does it restrain the writer's creativity in any way?

I would hope that you guys do not write a third-rate MYSTERY.

Knox and Van Dine had a lot of good points. I think that anything that violates their rules (except maybe the whole uh, Chinaman thing) is probably not a good idea.

>> No.8537698

>>8537691
I won't say whether I think it's a good idea or not, but I think such things are acceptable with proper foreshadowing. The pretenses shouldn't matter as much as whether there was enough information for the audience to figure it out by the end.

A cop being the culprit is fine, provided there is foreshadowing.
The DETECTIVE being the culprit is complete bullshit though.

I feel your pain. I used to live a few hundred kilometers away from an astronomical observatory, so the sky was almost always clear and beautiful. I even bought a telescope. Now I can barely see venus.

Spain here, we have a lot of small towns like Hinanamizawa, the problem is there aren't so green like.
They are quite yellowish.
I'm sure there are places like Hinanamizawa in America, just search OP.

>> No.8541820

I lived in such a town. All other children my age were girls, too, including my sister with whom we were frequently mistaken as twins. That's the reason I grew up so feminine, I guess.

Those were good days, during spring I could pick maybe half a kilogram of various fruit and nuts from nearby trees while walking home from school.
