have you ever tried it? i whiff a lot when i try to end my combos with j2c. plus i've never been able to special out of it properly. apparently the way you're supposed to do it is j2c into j236b, but the timing is really hard and i've never been able to do it but once or twice in practice mode.

besides, i have worse problems. my normal bnb is 15 hit and i didn't ever do anything more than probably a 11 or 12 hit (not including arc drive of course). even though i can go into practice mode and do it without looking at the screen lol.

Against the good Aoko's I've played, they lay their orbs around the field as much as they can during neutral phase.
If they're playing defensively, just set up orbs in front, on top and at a jump-in angle.

Don't worry in some connections you won't be able to keep combos due to the speed and random spikes. What I do after matches like that is go to training to make sure my shit is together and just chalk it up to experience.

I played many matches where I would do a combo and get random results due to a single shift in speed and it does make me rage.

But you were a bit too passive with Aoko, though she is a zoning character you still need to get in there. I was also getting counter hit by a ton of those air orbs, you need to capitalize on that. Focus on getting out of the corner and keeping me in it.

I know this isn't a general discussion but I want to let off some steam. sorry beforehand.

the fact that normal combos cannot be used for blockstrings blows my fucking mind. the learning curve for this game seems ridiculous! oh well, i have finally found a series of good videos of a skilled H-akiha and I am going to try to redesign my play style around what I see. I am expecting big things from myself, but my execution in real games is still abysmal. My combos are nice and tidy (short for a H groove though) in practice mode but everything just falls apart in a real game.

reading guides, I've seen a lot of people say that using air ribbons is an important part of h-akiha's pressure and okizeme, but i don't think i saw this guy use an air ribbon *once*. the only specials he ever used were the 22x pits, rarely a 236a/b pillar, and extremely rarely he would use his EX momiji for a reversal. It seemed like he spent most of his circuit on shield bunkers to keep his momentum.

Anyway, I know I've never fought an aoko before so I look forward to fighting you for the first time. Good luck.

There was at least one F-Reis player in the H-Akiha video I was watching. He was not bad, but he was totally outclassed. Akiha was EX shielding his specials most times time he tried to do a reversal, which for H-groove means a free combo. Anyway, it does seem like F-Reis videos are not particularly hard to find. How do I become a more offensive-minded player?
I'm naturally more inclined towards a defensive playstyle it seems, but against anyone who knows what they're doing, I feel being too defensive just gets me stuck in the corner. I'm not talking about any specific character here; just in a very general sense. What's the best way to get myself into a more aggressive mindset; to get over this fear I have of getting punished for doing basically anything but blocking?

It might seem pathetic, but go into the training mode for a while. Beat the shit out of bots and whatnot.

That might get you more comfortable with the idea of offensive movement. It may take a while for that to translate into a normal game, but gaining a natural inclination toward attacking is a critical thing to victory.

I think Melty is a very momentum-based game. So keeping that momentum is pretty crucial, learn what moves is better for your character to wake up with or which specials trade off for your convenience in the tide of battle. Go with safe moves to turn the tide, and once it's in your favor, confuse the enemy as much as possible in your types of entrances.

It takes a lot of vs playing though, imo. Incidentally, someone in America want to host? I'm not in the US so I might get 5 or 6 delay though.

Depends on the character too. Like all fighting games, you want to push them into your kind of fight. Nero's kind of aggression/pressure is very different from Nanaya's is very different from Mech's. Others just have great mid-range or approach games so that's where they try to keep the fight.

Do C-Len's orbs have any good point? They don't last all that long, don't seem to do enough damage to make them worth it, and can even interrupt combos if they hit at bad times. Are they just some gimmick that actuall sucks in practice?

the only advice i can really give is to work on your blockstrings a bit, i noticed sometimes you wouldnt reverse beat the unsafe slide so i got a free punish

also do more high's, i could pretty much downback all that and wait for you to leave an opening

just do an IAD into a high or empty IAD into a low to keep me guessing

that will also catch me with i throw out a low during your pressure like aoko 2B

As for improvements, focus on learning to do some combos that you can 90% of the time execute without fail. That is combos that end with your opponent on the floor.
You may have noticed that you're tagging me a lot, just think of all the damage you could do if you could capitalize on that! Doing this should help you learn your move set as well.

Next up is just learning to block, understand the match's momentum. Don't be so tempted to attack on wake up or after a few of my normals. Try to identify patterns before identifying openings.

Even if you manage to tag me while I'm putting pressure on you, since you don't have the capability to capitalize, I won't be coerced to act to your liking. You're sending the message of 'it's okay to be reckless'.

Keep at it, you'll learn to, or at least get the idea of how to, pressure. The other stuff should come as well with more match experience.

There needs to be a netplay training mode.

There's probably more variance between the grooves then there is between the characters. most of the time one groove completely inverts the other grooves' playstyles for a given character. Just pick a character that seems cool to you imo, then pick a groove that fits your "style."
