Actually to me, the celsius system is still kind of non-sensible because the actual freezing temperature of water varies with altitude/pressure, not to mention would probably be totally different on different planets etc, which makes it need stupid footnotes to make it workable. Kelvin is the way to go. Seems that "common" people just don't get kelvin however, so water's an easier template.

Metrics are also based on arbitrary values, such as the Kilo is supposed to be the approximate weight of X atoms of X element (forgot the details). Then again I think pretty much any measurement system, no matter how perfect, would be based on arbitrary values taken from observed natural phenomena (such as light speed and atomic mass since that should allow for constant, replicable remeasurement values).

Metric simply scales in a far more logical order. Which of course, still makes it a shit ton more sensible than imperial, just know that it's not at all perfect either.

>>8524511
> Kilo is supposed to be the approximate weight of X atoms of X element (forgot the details)
1 gram = 1 milliliter = 1 cubic centimeter of water.

At a certain temperature and pressure, obviously. Can't tell you that.

>> No.8524517

>>8524503
Might be that way in the south, but around here (cali) pretty much everyone knows metric as well. We get taught metric several times over in high school science courses, so any American who doesn't know it either grew up before that started happening (not sure when) or they were dumbasses who ignored it probably 2 or 3 times over.

Scientists and associated researchers here all use metric. Engineers I'd assume know it, but, I'm not sure that they actually all use it here. Architects and hence civil/structural engies I'm pretty sure don't, but I'm not sure about mechanical does or not.

The base measurement is the part that can be as arbitrary as you want it, base it off anything. What shouldn't be is the increments from there. Why the imperial system did what it did is beyond me, requires more complex conversion for anything and requires more memorization. Who thought that shit up anyways.

>> No.8524532

Are you literally retarded?

If you don't even know that Kelvin and Celsius are essentially the same fucking thing... wow.

And what you say about the gram is complete bullshit. As least use wikipedia or something.
>On 7 April 1795, the gram was decreed in France to be equal to "the absolute weight of a volume of water equal to the cube of the hundredth part of the meter, at the temperature of melting ice."
It is not arbitrary when it is based on something that doesn't change and is replicable. And don't give that bullshit about pressure and shit, there are standard environments used when referring to these.

When talking about measurements obviously there is no such thing as perfect, but the most logical is all that should matter.

Can't believe you trying to say that because neither are perfect both are shit.
