Has a /jp/ music act ever been on a US talk show?

1) Girls Generation landed in New York City yesterday to a huge crowd meeting them at the airport. SNSD arrived to The Late Show David Letterman to a huge crowd again but it was more orderly because of the security (see the vid below)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nwg1cJ7nYP8

2) SNSD already filmed their performance. According to twitter, Bill Murray was grooving to them. If you want to see a preview of their performance, go see the (sexy) vid below and just imagine them singing that song in Engrish
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=O9YFncRmZdM

3) Girls Generation will on Live with Kelly Ripa on 2/1. Howie Mandell will be co-hosting with Jennifer Lopez as the lead guest.

4) SNSD will also have a fan-signing at the big BestBuy store in NYC on 2/2
http://www.facebook.com/BestBuyUnionSquare

How will SNSD do on all these American TV shows? And if you are near NYC, why didnt you go meet them at the airport, or are going to the Letterman show, or see them at their fan-signing?

That is more comedy than a real music act. Has there been a 'real' /jp/ music group/singer on a US talk show.

I know in the past like in the 70s, there were a few Japanese singers who tried to crossover to the US.

But has there been recent ones like in the last 10-20 years?

That's not how the music industry works, dearie, that's how the music segment of David Letterman's show works. Obscure publicity-craving groups rent that slot for what I can only guess is a flat fee and they get their marginal two minutes of attention in return, provided that the viewers don't switch the program sooner since the segment is thrown at the end of the show as a mere afterthought.
How many unknown soul singers and country musicians have passed on that stage? More than I and David can possibly remember, that's sure. I would say this is more than enough evidence to firmly state that it's not a place of honor but just an empty space for lesser-known bands to get some shameless plug from an old codger, in case they lack a more prestigious platform that would give them the time of the day.

You're right, the whorish imagery, the in-your-face swagger, the gratuitous autotune, the brain-numbing electronica that became a staple in literally every KPop band in the last 5 years clearly aren't inspired by bad American pop music from the early '90s. It's just my impression, Koreans are so original and innovative, nida.

Also, what you are namedropping is a rock composer. By that logic, I might say that Johnny Kitagawa created boybands back in the '70s but I'm not that stupid. Korea was an underdog country back then and it still is nowadays, nobody ever heard to this guy before now or at least not the world at large, saying that the Korean music industry is not a victim of foreign fads is outright delusional, period.

A short documentary about the K-pop scene.

Even Korean music execs recognize that K-pop is basically a commercialized, factory industry, however disciplined and skilled their performers may be.

Japan used to be like this until the international J-pop appeal started to die down. New genres are being explored, and Japan is practically the only country outside of the Anglo-German sphere that has a substantial post-modern music scene. The likes of Merzbow and Japanese math rock is highly recognizable in the most hipster of music communities. Korea might follow this path, but the pop sensation has yet to die down so it might continue for some time.

Koreans are extremely prideful of their increasing prominence on the world stage, especially after being culturally emasculated by China thoughout ancient history, and Japan throughout the 20th century.

The South Korean government even has a Ministry dedicated to increasing the brand value of Korea. Meanwhile, the "cultural mascot" of Japan is Doraemon, a character that is absolutely unmarketable outside of Asia.

South Korea has more international awareness, or depending on your point of view, panders to their US masters more than the Japs do.

To be fair Japan doesn't really need to market itself or its culture as can be witnessed by the sheer volume of popular references. Ninja or samurai crap are as popular as ever amongst normalfags to name a few. S-Korea on the other hand is a country no one has heard of culturewise, so it's no wonder that it has to market itself and even manufacture fake shit to compensate for its lack of culture and history. The result of all this is S-korea's unoriginality in everything they make.

>I'm talking about the viability of loli-voice in the mainstream Japanese market.

You mean singing in falsetto? Scaring away casual listeners?
Nonsense.
It used to be greatly popular among idols and female singers alike, at least until the early Nineties. All you need to do is take a song from the Showa age and it'll be instantly evident what I'm meaning.
Mainstream idol groups still do it to some extent and this fact alone doesn't result in a contraction of the fan base (incidentally, what happens is the opposite - an expansion into young and young "adult" demographics).
Although those that could are fleshing out their repertorie with many other genres (ballads, enka, rock, electronica) which of course employ different vocal ranges.
Not a deciding factor, honestly, unless your casual listener is a braindead jock who judges songs according to how "so gay" they are.

Korea does have a longer history than Japan. The thing is that Japan had a two century headstart in marketing its traditional culture to the West, due largely to the Meiji regime's international ambitions. Anything with an Asian aesthetic is pretty much either "Japanese or Chinese" in the Westerner's point of view, so Koreans are very much limited to K-pop to market their culture.

>Japan's distortion of history

1. The Chinese, specifically the Communist regime was the first to censor Japanese war crimes from academic curriculum. Mao wanted everybody to forget the war and focus on building a lasting relationship with Japan.
2. The Japanese liberal movement for the recognition of Japanese war crimes far precedes similar movements in China or Korea, mostly because Japan was in a better economic condition to foster academic growth.
3. People like Iris Chang are the reason why Westerners see all Asians as racists. Her movement was based entirely on emotion and basically flew in the face of legitimate dialogue. She didn't even have the guts to learn Japanese and communicate with Japanese academics because she harbored the age-old beliefs about Chinese-Japanese rivalry and the oriental victim-complex, all the while disregarding my point number 1 and the fact that the Chinese people were single-handedly more responsible for more Chinese destruction of culture than any other nation.

Taking a youtube video seriously is like trying to prove a point on the Opposing Views forum of Stormfront. Also I sincerely doubt that anybody on /jp/ is truly sympathetic to either cause. You're preaching to the choir.

Things everybody on /jp/ should have known:

*Japan owes a lot of its culture to China and Korea
*Japan is responsible for more exportation of Asian culture than Korea, and as such, the Japanese brand is more valued and recognized than both China or Korea
*Like the Japanese copied American designs when its auto industry was in its infancy, the same is happening in Asia; Chinese/Korean companies are not particularly known to respect patent laws, and their respective governments really have no incentive to enforce such law because it would be detrimental to their booming economies
*People should start ignoring nationalist trolls both IRL and the internet

Korea was highly influential in the transmittance of Chinese culture to Japan, as it was in a geographically advantageous position to do so. I have no comment on how the culture UNIQUE to Korea was responsible in influencing Japan, if at all, because it's a dumb point to argue.

Anyway, my point was about transmittance. Like how the Muslims are responsible for paper-making in Europe-- the Chinese technology that proliferated the Arab countries, making its way to the Maghreb, then to Europe, is directly the result of the Muslim civilization.
