I'm not normally quick to judge but there's far too much of this shit so you know it's basically going to be the story itself. It's a complete waste of all the clean graphics and fancy animation.

So I just finished the trial and this is very, very boring.
You know those PDAs you could pick up in Doom 3? Imagine that, but that's the whole game. I figured out the stupid plot twist less than five minutes into it and that's saying something because I wasn't even paying attention to anything. I was just reading. But not enjoying it. Also there seem to be a few feminist overtones and it's kind of forced down your throat that the future is DIFFERENT to today-times.

I seriously cannot imagine anyone playing this trial and then paying for the full thing.

They outright reference /u/ in DTIPB.

Honestly, after the trainwreck that DTIPB was, I just don't feel like reading anything by her ever again, unless it's a story with no genders implied, like Digital.

It's perfectly clear she's unable to write anything with male characters in it without the entire thing sounding like LGBT propaganda, and that's pretty sad.

I liked DTIPB. But mostly because the idea appealed to me. Maybe if I was interested in make-believe Korean family disputes IN SPACE I'd like this.
But yeah, she can't write...a lot of things very well, and she acknowledged this in a blog post following DTIPB's release. At the time I thought it was quite bold of her and figured she'd improve, but instead it seems she's just written boring things instead. They're not poorly written or anything, I just can't feel any connection to anything going on in Analogue. Maybe it's because it threw you in at the deep end with sixty things to read, each having their own special button that gives you something else to read that makes 2-5 more things appear. I mean, it's a VN, I know I'm going to read a lot, but this is a fucking chore.
At least I'm fairly certain there are no sex or romantic scenes in this. Though one of the characters was a freshly married teenager who kept a diary, so I know that's going to be painful.

Overall, I'd say it's about 3.2 Katawa Shoujos. Would not recommend.

Video game abstraction are crazy, AM I RIGHT?!

Plenty of systems actually do this. Even on UNIX there are commands that will list all programs, and you can easily set up a shell script to show all the available commands on start-up (as your MOTD, for instance). If we assume the user in this instance is logged on as some sort of "guest" account, these could very well be the only commands available (e.g. with the execute bit set for the user). Note the title bar says "(restricted mode)" too.
Keep in mind that in the context of this story, the file browsing and manipulation is all done with the flashy GUI. It's entirely possible that a space ship would have very little of the traditional UNIX functionality, only this override terminal as a fallback. In fact plenty of systems are already moving to this model--when was the last time you were even able to run `ls' on your phone without voiding the warranty?

Though speaking of UNIX, I thought the date up there was a nice touch (Mon Jan 1 00:00:00 1979) until I realized she had gotten the epoch wrong. Oh well, maybe it was changed in the future or I'm misunderstanding the reference.

I went into DTIPB with an open mind. At the start I was sort of getting into the setting and the style. But then narrative takes a back seat to the author tracts. By the end of it I was sick of reading such a ham handed attempt at making a point about the redefinition of privacy with the popularity of social media.
Characters were one-dimensional, there was no development or proper narrative. The interactions were bogged down by the truly naive views on gender identity and sexual orientation. It was awful, just awful. And the CG scenes are horrendous, but I'll accept the excuse of release being rushed. Problem is that the product suffers for it and the details around development shouldn't matter to the final appreciation.

Love has some good ideas and can handle a polished interface. But the narrative is weak at best, and that's the core of any visual novel. All I hope is that the misguided positive reviews this gets doesn't get to their head and they start thinking that they need to change nothing about their writing style. The games can be good if the writing improves, but as it is, it's just "so bad it's amusing" games.

This is how I see it after reading DTIPB. Opinions are subjective, but I formed them after seeing the whole product and without preconceptions.

You know, I welcome the experimentation. Indie games go for around that price (except when part of the Humble Bundle) and maybe this could open up a market for western made visual novels. It might go down as a bad move, but it's useful to have someone test the ground.

Who knows, this could mean, along with KS, for a larger variety of stories told through the medium and higher quality standards.

The game is bad, but it opens up the idea of VN as games. This is how I choose to view it, with a positive spin.

Also, from Twitter:
> @christinelove really want your game but here in venezuela we got our money really limited to spend outside. Can't we get to a deal of <10$?
> @Dr_Bomb I don't know when, but I can definitely promise at some point it will be on sale for that or less.

visual novels should not be over $10 unless they are more than just words words words.

That's not true. The last U.S. base on Taiwan was taken down since 1979. The US does not have an embassy there either.

I think that summarizes Christine Love with a nice bow on top. Decent ideas, lacking execution.

I'd read something about multigenerational ships, but if you don't care about the characters then it's pointless. You get more complex family trees in stuff like 100 Years of Solitude, and generations of people in space in stuff like the Merchant Princess series or even in Accelerando where you get narrative shifts as generations pass.
Fragmentation and the changes of the idea of families in space travel. Fair topics to explore, but I'm afraid that they are beyond Love's current skills.

>> No.8508679

>>8508660
This, to a tee.
In fact all it really needed was a way to make me care. "You're on a mission and here's a space ship" sounds kind of exciting, but it doesn't make me care about these people. I guess I was a little interested in the Pale Bride's history and perspective, but her logs didn't come until after the dull Korean-domestic-disputes-in-space boringness.
Maybe it's one of those VNs you're supposed to play through once, then play through again and be like, "Ohhh NOW I see why that matters!" I don't trust Christine Love to have thought that far into it though.

>> No.8508691

>>8508671
I think you misunderstood, Mr Greentext. Once you learn the super secret not-obvious-at-all "twist" that *Hyun-ae is The Pale Bride that makes a lot of sense.

Most of the stupid feminism is in the log entries regarding how women are treated. My guess is that she figured people would say, "Oh but I live in the present day and that's awful! How can they treat people like that?! What? It's based on a real period of history?! Ohmygosh, men are horrible!" In fact it's very similar to what she did in don't take it personally, but there she did it half-decent. Here I just want to strangle her and oppress her gender.

Agreed, if this was $5, sure; but $15 can get me a lot of fun off of Steam.

I'm justifying the price to myself by saying the extra money went towards her previous works; but if she goes for this much for not that much content on her next game, I'm just gonna skip it.

>> No.8509816

I've played a little more of Analogue today.

It's not awful but it isn't really a visual novel, it's a text adventure with a flashy GUI. That costs $15.

In the unlikely event Chris is reading this, quit masturbating your Ren'Py programming skills and work on learning to write without narrative gimmicks.

You might get a pass this time from the casuals but after three productions that devote more creative energy to the how than the what, you will be recognized as the M. Night of the field.

There are no likeable characters in this VN, only victims of cultural bias, as though the tragedy of medieval Asia's treatment of women is enough to compensate for bland imperial diaries. You are not Margaret Atwood, you don't write literature, don't even pretend to write comparative future feminist dystopia porn.

The reason this story is told in as convoluted a manner as it is, is because told forwards it would be frighteningly apparent how trite its drama is. The inherent idea isn't trite; had it been set in its actual period and told in a linear fashion it could have been shocking, even poignant -- but it would have required a better writer to carry it off.

I predict that Chris will make one or two more like this and then suddenly decide we weren't ready for their genius and move on to something else.

Unless, of course, Chris quits jerking off and tells a story someone might give a shit about.

I don't really care if it's a transgender man into women or an actual lesbian.

That person identifies as a she, and her original gender doesn't change how I feel about how pathetic her views of straight people are, which shows quite a lot in her writing.
