When you are running filters over it, try to use filters that make the picture lose precise details while maintaining its overall impression. I like GIMP's Oilify filter for this. With the background being less detailed, it doesn't really stand out too much from the simplified drawn character.

You can also drain most/all of the color from an image and blur it slightly. Although the background is clearly separate from the foreground here, the lack of color and blurriness divert the attention to the foreground while the reader still gets to get an impression of the environment from the foreground.

Thinking of writing a locked room mystery story.

A world war has just ended, an armistice has been signed, every commerce raider has been recalled to port and ordered to surrender. Most warships return to port without any problems, and those left in the sea and presumed scuttled or sunk. Two months later, an allied battleship explodes and sinks in strange circumstances on it's way home, threatening the recently signed peace accords. Just when the investigation is finished and the incident is dismissed as a freak accident, two submarines surface near a neutral port and surrender, claiming they did not want to return to their homeland to avoid internment. Since all the other raiders had been accounted for, their captains become the new suspects and the case is re opened. Their crews are interrogated and their logs captured intact, but the results of the new investigation are contradictory. Will the detective be able to figure out who sunk the battleship?

Based on a true story I just read about on /x/.

The Vienne visual novel short story collection project is looking for artists and musicians.

You have probably seen the thread (>>8490784) on the front page a couple of times, but in case people don't know: It's a project to make a VN out of five short stories written by /jp/ writers.

The poll has just finished and the five stories to work on have been determined. The stories can be found at http://jpvn.dyndns.org/.. We need artists to draw art for the stories and musicians to make music and sound for the stories. If you like one of the stories and would like to draw or compose for it, please add yourself to the project on the wiki, post in the thread or contact me at incompetentleader@yahoo.com.

I wanted to have an orchesstral section after this, leading into a choral passage, before having a grand finale befitting the resurrected emperor. Pretentious? Sure, but Miko deserves nothing less than the grandest.

And now for some programming and music OC: http://www.stack.nl/~vdz/musicrunner/ (PC and Android)

Simple music game made with some other people for a school project. Gameplay is like Vib Ribbon (kinda similar to Bit.Trip Runner for those who don't know about Vib Ribbon), except you actually have to play the notes in the tracks (like in Keyboardmania). Scoring is in beatmania/DDR style.

Controls are QWERTY for CDEFGA, or you can use a MIDI Keyboard if you have one. Android has an onscreen piano for controls.

The game has online high scores visible at http://www.traceher.com/, so go forth and get the top places at every track.

The game has some timing issues. You can adjust the latency setting in config.ini if it gets too bad. This is strongly recommended if you want to play on Android, since Android latency is terrible.

It's not even an OC thread over there. It's not even a drawthread. It's a 'request and deliver' thread.

There's also not really a subject-wise content divide here, you know. If a /jp/ user made something, it can go here. Not just touhou/vocaloid/etc., but original stuff too. There's a line to be drawn for potential stupidity, but that kind of work is well above it. Those kinds of submissions are what make our OC threads more productive than that of other boards.

>> No.8524556

>>8524546
I don't know about that.

I've been making music for many years but have never posted it here despite being proud of it, because it's not /jp/ related. If I made some Touhou flash games and used them as BGM or something I'd do that, other than that, it just won't happen.

KS is invariably an /a//v/ thing. I'm not sure if there's a customs/crafting thread on /toy/ (there used to be some there), or if something like this exists in /diy/, but I'd check there as well if you understandably wouldn't want /a/ getting in a tizzy over it.

The things you post in these threads don't have to be /jp/ related. This is why it says "general original content thread" and "anything is welcome" in the OP post every time. 61 times in fact.

In reality these threads were started to inspire /jp/ers to go out and create something (anything). It's purpose is a little different than the OC threads on the other boards. What >>8524546 said is correct.

>> No.8524647

I don't have enough of them done to make a pixiv with. Maybe if I finished a couple dozen of them (and retouched my first ones like that to be a more consistent standard). Not to mention I'm not 100% confident I could translate them perfectly or if nips would get all of them. You see, I have a sub-series of these involving ZUN as a god in his own world, noclipping around the sky editing / messing with things/chars via console. I'm unsure how much computer jargon I can use without that getting lost in translation. And I don't think I should put them on pixiv in just english.

I stopped making these for a while since they turned out surprisingly much crappier than they looked as sketches on paper, but, I decided to give it another go with a different protocol recently, which looks (I think) a little better now that I considered more what my standard should be.

I understand your position, and I operate along the same guidelines, only more lax. I think completely original work definitely has a place here. /a/ stuff can go in /a/(even though those threads are totally dismal for OC) and so on, but those original works are worth a post.

Since there's no /fig/, I think these from-scratch models are the very stuff of what makes up /jp/ OC. Even if there were, I don't think any other board gets such a wide variety of media coming into their OC threads. Could be wrong, but that's what I like about these threads.

Well basically, see the image.

Those on the left-hand side (your project, OMGWTFOTL, Tsukihime) use default ONScripter menus, while those on the right (Red Shift, Narcissu, Umineko) have customized right-click menus.

Custom menus have quite a few advantages that go beyond aesthetics, but are a bit trickier to work with--you'll have to be a lot more careful while scripting.

>> No.8532049

>>8531929
Hmm. Not sure how to explain in a manner that isn't overly technical.

In order to use custom menus, in the definition block you put "textgosub *<label>", which means that the <label> routine is called whenever there's a clickwait or pagewait state ("@" puts the program in clickwait, "/" puts the program in pagewait).

All you need to know is, you have to script differently from usual because a special routine is called at every wait state.

e.g.
Normally you might write something like:
`Sentence one.@ Sentence two.@ Sentence 3.\

With textgosub the same thing would be:
`Sentence one. @ `Sentence 2. @ `Sentence 3.\

That's just the most basic example. Other things like <br> are handled differently too.

Won't guarantee it's perfect but I did run it quite a few times until it seemed bug-free. If there's anything you don't understand feel free to ask, although I think it's quite straightforward.

You may notice that all the "setwindow [...]" stuff is now handled by subroutines. wait/delay commands can be shortened to !w/!d. Though I'd recommend using subroutines to handle text color, I'll leave that up to you.

Always willing to lend a hand if you need assistance with ONScripting.

When I was 5/6, I had to take special training in order to become able to draw anything resembling straight lines (I was completely unable to do anything like that, which would cause problems for writing). I'm 21 now, and I am still unable to draw a straight line. (If it's short it can seem pretty straight, though anything longer than a letter's size doesn't even resemble a straight line.) When did I claim that? What I'm saying is that I have a severe handicap by being heavily inclined towards writing instead of drawing. When I think about how to express something, I think in terms of how I'm going to write it, not draw it. The most I even want to do in terms of drawing is make adequate character designs for better artists to follow up on.

>What I'm saying is that I have a severe handicap by being heavily inclined towards writing instead of drawing. When I think about how to express something, I think in terms of how I'm going to write it, not draw it.

I'm not a very left-brain oriented person. I have more of a penchant for computers and playing instruments (not composing, mind you). Furthermore, drawing certainly does not come easily for me. My depth perception is abysmal, and attempting to translate real scenes onto paper causes a great deal of mental fatigue.

However, instead of sitting around, lamenting that I wasn't born with a propensity for creating visual art like my brother, I make the effort to devote an hour or so every day to drawing. I'm still far from where I'd like to be (certainly not good enough to post anything here), but I have made ever so slight improvements, and will continue to try and improve.

Any effort you put toward anything is going to pay off, somehow, and anything worth developing the skills for is not going to come easy. You've fabricated a world which dictates that you simply have no potential to draw. However, if you'd only open your eyes, you'd realize that it's quite the opposite. It may come slightly harder for you than others, but if you try, it'll eventually come.

>The most I even want to do in terms of drawing is make adequate character designs for better artists to follow up on.

Then make this your goal. Do a little bit of research and see how you need to practice in order to achieve this goal. Complaining on /jp/ that you simply cannot draw is not going to propel you toward your desire.

Also, when it comes to anything, remember that you need both practice and application. Different things work for different people, but I feel that this particular concept is quite universal. Failure to neglect either principle will make things more difficult in the long run.

If you think so logically, why don't you follow his very logical advice? You are unhappy you cannot draw. To become happy you have to become better at drawing. To do so you have to practice, which is what he suggests. That way you will have some chance of reaching your goal, depending on how much effort you put into it and how dedicated you are. Instead, you make posts whining on /jp/ how it isn't fair you weren't born with supreme talent, like some drawing-god is going to hear your lamentations, come down from the heavens and grant you 'ultra-special drawing powerz'.

What you're doing has zero percent chance of reaching your goal. Following his advice gives you at least a better chance than that.

Or develop your writing skills better. You say you're good at that, well why don't you go from there, then? Good writing is also a respected craft. Maybe you can even team up with an artist and write stories that he can make drawings based off.

Whoops, it appears my secret is revealed: I'm human and therefore make mistakes. There's one in my last sentence as well, actually.

Regardless, whether or not you get what you want is your choice and yours alone. Is life fair? No. Is life equal? Hardly. If it was, I would be an incredible artist already, like my brother. But, to say you don't have any chance whatsoever of learning to draw is downright silly.

You can continue trying to garner pity from others, a failing endeavor, or you can take our advice and actually attempt to better yourself.

Whether or not you succeed doesn't really affect me. If you fail, my life will go on. However, you do have my continued support if you decide to stop wallowing in your fabricated sorrow and better yourself.

>>8539833

The act of flying and the act of drawing are hardly a valid comparison. By nature, a human's appendages do not have the potential to fly. It's a physical impossibility. As long as a person has a fully functioning arm, on the other hard, the potential to draw exists.

But, the fact of the matter is that man has already learned to fly through the use of aircraft. Rather than trying to somehow magically overcome a physical impossibility, we designed machines which achieve the same purpose. If you honestly feel that it's absolutely impossible for you to learn to draw through traditional practice and dedication (which I assure you is not the case), then figure out a method which will work for you.

Alright fags here's the best way to learn if you're mentally capable of drawing. Take a picture of you're favorite touhou, flip it upside down and draw it. No tracing, just draw what you see.

If something clicks in your head, good, you've got what it takes at the very least. If nothing registers, pack your bags and get out. No hope for you.

I'm fully aware that it's not symmetrical. Anyways, you can only see at most a full rainbow of diamonds from any angle, so I don't think it needs more of those.

It's kinda weird how vastly different the sprite diamonds are from her in-game portrait diamonds, but oh well.

Yup, just tested it, we're past bump limit. Might be too soon for a new thread though.

>Yep. I've filled countless sketchbooks with my crappy scribbles.
>Even drawing basic shapes like cubes is a bit of a challenge for me.
This goes well beyond "I'm a writer, therefore I can't draw" and right into the realm of some actual disorder or another. Hard work and practise does pay off, no matter the subject - as long as your brain and/or other organs vital to the task are physically capable of it. "Being a writer" doesn't exclude you of it, having defective visual memory or pattern recognition does. Would explain why your brain is trying to compensate by leaning towards words rather than images.

If that's the case, you're in a privileged position to be a writer and most likely a programmer too, if your brain can handle maths. You wouldn't have to worry about visualizing the program and making the code easy to look at like I do.

Anyway, it'd be fun to see if you drew the same picture any differently with different eyes blocked.

So what's the new bump limit?

At 500 posts.

That's not for all boards, is it? I know some of them still cap at 300.

I guess you are right, 300 is still the /jp/ limit, apparently.

This is the one instance where I don't like being right.

Maybe I'll go do that one day.

I'm back. That might make sense if I actually did think in words, but I exclusively think in images, moving ones at that. I have a friggin picturesque memory, and hate any form of code. I'm just guessing that I have plain old bad luck.

There's no need to do so before someone has content to share. If you can't start the thread with something you've drawn, don't start it.

Well, that's just how it is. The focus of these threads is mainly on art (good luck even getting any attention with writing or programming), and other contributions just aren't interesting as opening post.
