I like the dark blue eyes much more than the bright blue ones. I'm still debating what to get for my DDH-06 girl, but I'm (strongly) leaning towards blue eyes as well. I think I'd like lighter brown (or maybe even blonde) hair for mine, though. Something more like the attached pic.

Has anyone seen any pictures of Dollfie Dreams with more realistic styled makeup and eyes? I've got only resin dolls and was planning to get my first Dollfie Dream next month and was just wondering if I should stick with a more anime/moe look or go for a realistic one as a change of pace. Was thinking of getting DDH-04 since I love her face and the shape of her eyes.

You could make your own but generally DDs are not tailored to look like SDs or other Resins. You can stick resin-style realistic eyes in, but personally I think it doesn't fit DDs.

imo they still haven't made a decent 1/6th stand.

I currently have both the Obitsu and Azone stands on my dolls. The Obitsu's necks are too long so I need about 3 inches of space behind my girls in order to use those.

The Azones, while looking "OK", are really pieces of shit. The neck does not stay in the base at all and the clip is non-adjustable and doesn't really fit around anything bigger than a 25cm doll and even that's pushing it with any amount of clothes on.

If anyone has any other choices for that scale I'm all ears.

The official channels (e.g. hobby search/doll manufacturers) will never mark your shipping orders below invoice value or they'll be charged with accounting fraud.

On the other hand, some proxy services do give you both those options due to their grey market nature, especially if you're using their auction services. The key is how informal is the business. Look up their shipping FAQ or asking them directly in an email to confirm.

The sigma's AF isn't full retard anymore. The viewfinder AF actually have the target within F/1.4's razor sharp DOF. I'm satisfied that I don't have to use live view's "guaranteed to hunt" contrast AF.
On the topic of AF, 100L macro has the same slight front focus bias on the same focus test chart (which isnt a scientifically calibrated test..); but it's a $600 camera's AF system with no micro adjustment, I can always play with the full-time manual override as long as I can rely on the AF at least putting the subject in focus to begin with.

tl;dr: sigma lens actually puts the target inside F/1.4 DOF instead of full retard, I'm satisfied that I can rely on it.

As for trying the world of macro, I'm obligated to baffle at how much dust I've discovered on everything.
It's a lot easier now to get real close-up shots with dolls. It was impossible to frame shots that doesn't cover a large section of a 1/3's body with the sigma 50.
The 100L's USM is slower than the sigma. I thought the lens' focus drive was broken until I saw the distance scale moving due to its lack of recoil and near silence.

>The 100L's USM is slower than the sigma
I noticed it has a dual personality, it'll start slow and hunt... slowly. If AF finds something to work with then it'll snap. Obviously as objects go past 1m to infinity focusing adjustments will be shorter and snappier. It is a macro after all, and there will be longer turns of the barrel the closer to the subject you get.

Just ordered my first doll, an Obitsu 50cm. They're pretty cheap if you're willing to do all the face and clothing yourself.

Anyone got good advice for what materials to make clothing out of? I think most of the face is simple enough, just using acrylic paints with a base coat of Mr super clear. How well does the paint come off if you make a mistake?

>> No.8504032

>>8503990
I've worked with acrylics when I used to do garage kits so I'll try to provide some "general advice" that may be useful:

Not sure how well acrylics will work on soft vinyl. but I do know that if rubbing alcohol or windex won't remove an immediate mistake, Mr. Color thinner will definitely clean it up it since it's lacquer based and will dissolve acrylic mediums.

Just FYI try to avoid household household lacquer thinners. Mr. Color thinner and household lacquer thinner may both be "lacquer based" but they're completely different substances. ie. Mr Color thinner will NOT disintegrate a latex rubber glove or deform my vinyl worktable surface. Household lacquer thinner does, so I'd avoid using on a doll (always test first)

for someone looking into dollfies and volks for the first time. where would you guys recommend i start? i love the beatrice umineko doll but i can seem to find one for sale. also i saw a myriad of parts. could you build your own? and how much would that go for? thanks.

Start with what appeals to you.
Dolls can be built from parts (official, unofficial, created by yourself); or you can buy the entire limited set all at once. Prices vary drastically from the bare minimum of base body ($250~) + clothes ($100+) to direct from Volks (50-60k yen) to aftermarket prices for past limited/custom dolls in the thousand(s) range.

As for Volks Beatrice, search ベアトリーチェ in YAJ dollfie dream section and there are a few auctions up right now.
The cheapest auction is ending in 9 hours as of this writing: http://page5.auctions.yahoo.co.jp/jp/auction/e119218664
Here is the search link:
http://auctions.search.yahoo.co.jp/search?p=%E3%83%99%E3%82%A2%E3%83%88%E3%83%AA%E3%83%BC%E3%83%81%E
3%82%A7&auccat=2084241345&aq=-1&oq=beat&ei=UTF-8&slider=0&tab_ex=commerce

Also, there're Beatrice listings on Ebay. They deal in English with upfront prices and cheaper shipping.
You will have to do the mathematics with exchange rate, shipping, and the proxy service charges since YAJ listings are always cheaper.

Outfits go from everything between $20 and $200 depending on brand/etc. The dolls themselves vary a lot too, everything from $300 to way above $2000. Custom heads by "known" people on Y!J will obviously go for more, especially the ones that come with custom outfits.

If you want something "cheap" there's always Volks base model, P-Chan by Parabox (See image), or the various Azone 50cm ones.

Well that's a shame. I figured, as is the case with electronics and games, some would be willing to pay a very high price for the convenience of not having to deal with a foreign seller and a proxy bidding service.

In any case, if I make informed decisions and actually get what I want, I'm sure I'll love it. What I'm most worried about actually is making a mistake because of my lack of moon skills and builder knowledge. I suppose I could take the easy route and get a complete Volks character or licensed doll, but the custom ones appear far more cute.

I have a question for you guys about staining. How bad is this problem? Has it occurred to you? Someone care to share some insight? Thanks.

>> No.8525542

>>8523959
Not as bad as some people say. The only thing you have to know is heat helps vinyl sublimate dyes from color-rich clothing. Denim, blacks, reds, navy (such as the first release of Saber) are a few examples to start with.

Case #1. 2 summers ago I got some dark clothes from Dollmore mid-summer. Nanoha was ruined in half a weekend and her collar bones, ribs, legs and anything that maintained constant contact with the clothing all looked like they were covered in bruises. It took a week of zitcream and sunlamps to bleach her back from looking like a victim of domestic abuse. As much as I want to blame Dollmore's cheap fabrics I know the real catalyst was my refusal to use my house's central air conditioner needlessly.

Case #2, I got Kotori Shirakawa (in her Santa outfit) used in May on eBay. Unfortunately she was shipped clothed and on arrival her torso and upper arms looked as if they were smeared in red kool-aid. The arms I was able to save but I had to replace the torso.

tl;dr store in a cool dry place.

Some clothing makers go out of their way to put a white under-piece inside their dark colored works. Be sure to check for those and assess your staining risk.

>> No.8526172

>>8523959
Staining is more of a problem for dark clothes. Xodrok mentioned heat being a factor but it can happen in a minute even in a moderate room temperature.

Ways to counteract : Bodysuits, underpieces like placing an white stocking under dark ones, washing in Vinegar to get out excess dye

Alternatively you could just stick to light clothing for long term wear. Some people say they use dark clothing for very short periods and then switch it out, but I think staining could still potentially happen if you do that.

If staining does happen, it's usually treatable with pimple cream or something of the sort with Benzyl Peroxide in it. Worst case scenario the body could be replaced right?

Try not to pay scalper prices for limited dolls, It's just not worth it for something that's already unnecessarily expensive. Plus it just encourages the practice of scalping to continue. Scalpers and speculators ruin every hobby and do not need your money.

If they're gone, they're gone. If at a later date Beatrice shows up at a reasonable price complete or partial (like just the head and wig for example) then decide from there.

>> No.8529781

>>8529614

Isn't there a fine line between petty scalping and high prices due to collectability? Do you also disagree with the high prices that certain rare games like Zenki FX and Panzer Dragoon Saga fetch? Just trying to understand your position.
The way I see it, anything a.) in demand, and b.) in limited quantity is going to naturally drive the price up over time.

>> No.8530042

>>8529781
I'm not going to dispute what that fine line is, nor am I familiar with the examples you cited.

If it's hard to find it's because it's been around and there's a few surviving copies that didn't end up in the trash then it's rare. it's not being scalped and there's a legitimate collector's market with legitimate collectors prices. example: A used Tamaki or Sasara go for sale for 200,000 yen give or take 100,000 depending on their condition. have at it. it's rare. if i had the money and desire, sure.

On the other hand, If I see an unopened 200,000 yen saber lily the day after release then it's not rare. it sold out. was it bought for the sole purpose of profit? that's scalping. a year later? maybe still scalping. unopened a year later? scalper.

tl;dr, that's my stance. you can disagree, because your thresholds of what's worth it are different.

>> No.8530084

>>8528448
I'd say decide based on which you like the most. I wouldn't recommend getting Yukino just because she's cheaper, as once you get into this hobby getting more clothes and accessories easily adds more than the difference of their prices.

>>8530042
I'll agree with what he said here. I personally bought a Sasara for less than 200,000 yen but still quite a bit. Demand and supply drives up the price to a certain amount (see Tamaki and Sasara). Scalping would be selling at prices way above that (i.e. 300,000). The Saber Lily example is pretty spot on I think, since she was bought by various people and thrown on the market since day 1 for 200,000. I would agree that it's scalping.

The way I see it, small markups are not forms of scalping. For instance when new dolls come out and people buy it, then mark it up from 70k yen retail price to about 90k yen. It's true that they have profited but I feel in those cases it's more of a handling fee and cost of needing to win the lottery / go out and buy it at an event. Scalping territory is when it gets beyond that into unreasonable amounts.
