given the success of mvc3, there must be some contention over that view among americans.

A successful franchise needs to have a variety of mediums for many people to enjoy. Blazblue has a VN style story, a fighting game, and "anime" style character sprites along with a competitive game design.
Throw this together with merchandise and you can have a wide fanbase.

I don't believe it will ever beat out MvC3, since they have a very wide Marvel and capcom fan following, a low skill entry level for gameplay to attract many more players, and a large fanbase serves as a feedback cycle strengthening the game base further.

>> No.8482862

Rachel 's story. Or so I want it to be.

>> No.8482887

>>8482785
Yeah, you're never going to get the exact same audience as a Capcom game, but hopefully they've secured their niche.

The game is actually getting better each iteration. It has a LOT of flaws in CT, but we're already on the 4th game and a lot of things have been ironed out. It's not quite up there with the later Guilty Gear games, but it's getting there hopefully.

>> No.8483054

>>8482785
i guess i wasn't clear.

i was making fun of marvel for being so successful in america despite having possibly the worst gameplay in the market by throwing it at the statement "gameplay is what matters most in a fighter."

as of right now, marvel is successful because it's marvel, as in the successor to MvC2, and maybe for the characters(but i doubt the characters could have saved it without MvC2). well, i suppose you could argue that the gameplay was important, because its easiness also attracted people, but it certainly wasn't the quality of its gameplay as a competitive game. at least it doesn't use random numbers, i guess.

>> No.8483085

>>8473016
...awful like its mechanics. Yeah, CS:EX doesn't make the game any better. AH3 is almost 3 years old and is still better than it.

>> No.8483097

>>8483054
The difficulty definitely affects how popular it becomes.
My brother and sister both hate blazblue because they say it takes forever to become good with one character and is too hard on reflex compared to MvC3. I guess having one combo that works for every single character makes people feel like they're good at the game. So to a point gameplay does matter, just not the depth of it but the accessibility.

Even though Blazblue was toned down with the removal of things like exclusive gravity, jump instals and FRC's, it's still too much for people who are not willing to invest time in it.

>> No.8483107

>>8483085
>AH3 is almost 3 years old

Is it really that old? I thought that game came out last year. It's also an unfair comparison of balance when using AH3, since not every Arcana is viable with every character. When they make tierlists for that game, they don't make one for every character with every arcana, just a character with whatever two or three arcanas it is viable with.

>CS:EX doesn't make the game any better.

It's an improvement over previous iterations. It's easy to see you don't like the game, but saying that is just stupid.

>> No.8483160

>>8483107
It's not like arcana is the only mechanic of the game, you know.

>It's an improvement over previous iterations.
An improvement doesn't make the game magically 'better'. And that's what I hate about BB. SF4 on the other hand...

>> No.8483174

>>8483160
What would you want in the game then?
I'd like if they added more special cancels for every character and sped the entire game up, especially for characters who have slow juggle combo's like Hakumen.

>> No.8483215

>>8483209
Legion mode did a real simple version of that. It was kind of fun, but the hardest mode map still wasn't that large. They needed to be less lazy with that part.

>>8483196
Not really, although they have done a bit of work in that direction with Valkenhayn. It'd still be a lighter version of guilty gear, which I'm okay with. Guilty Gear has many mechanics which you wouldn't even notice unless you really read into it.

Well at least they got rid of most characters' easy mid screen combos.

Now sitting through a long combo is mostly just for the corner, or when they have meter. Which is the same in many fighters.

That does make the game more interesting in general.

CT had no flaws. Why should every punk and straggler get out of ice for free? You think ice is something that can be broken without a struggle? That it'll just come and go naturally, without hard work and determination? That's just the opinion of the weak.

It's kind of saddening watching Japanese tournaments like this sometimes.

I can have a shadow of a social life around here by being much better than the rest of my state, but I know that in Japan even on the off chance I was able to get up to par, I'd be left alone. Not only would I just be another good player but I'd be a creepy foreigner with imperfect Japanese. They'd probably just ignore me after the novelty wore off. Or rather, the novelty would wear off before I was even able to get up to par.

And I know a lot of them go to each other's houses to play after arcade hours, but I imagine there'd be a lot of people not really comfortable with inviting a foreigner to their homes. And it would feel terrible going to an offline meetup and having the atmosphere be soured because people are uncomfortable around you. I think I'd probably die if I was "politely told not to come back."

Mike(? Faust players)'s blog makes it seem like a lot of them are pretty cool, but Mike is a fairly sociable guy, and moreover doesn't really seem to try to do anything but play at arcades.

I imagine I'm the only one who gets thoughts like these, am I wrong?

It's so hard to get good, especially when you don't live in a huge city where everyone plays. Then you're criticized for being bad and "killing the community" because you don't have $1000 to drop to enter a tournament for a game you have bad experience with or playing online.

Not to mention people like >>8485729 that make things worse for everyone by getting people to make fun of the game and lower the fanbase even further.

>> No.8485798

Is Tao at the top now? She's been my main since CT.

>> No.8485829

>>8485798

Well tiers are made by matchups, and tao was the overall best character in godsgaren with many entrants, so she should be jumping up a bit.
I was trying to say with that, that tiers mean absolute shit anyways. They're set for top skill level first of all, and they're not absolute. Pretty much means nothing.

>> No.8486137

She's close. She was top in CS1, high in CS2, and she's pretty damn high in CSEX too. It's just that not many people use her properly. That neutral game man.

Looks like you really need 50 meter and corner to take someone out at the end, at least from what I saw in that tourney. The rest of the match is just attrition.

>> No.8486546

>>8486537
Huh? She's consistently been a character that does higher than average combo damage.

I see, I guess I'll have to look up some vids then.

I like how Hakumen is played in accordance to your opponent though. As a 3s player this is what I'm used to.

Super countering people is funny as fuck too.

>> No.8486565

>>8486549
That's 50 meter OR the corner, and that's with most characters. Both together is deadly. Apart it ends up being a nice 3-4k. Having both means you get an AB2 combo for 5-6.5k in CSEX.
