Short-Term Objectives
Fuwanovel has six short-term objectives.
1. Make high quality English translated visual novels more accessible for everyone.
2. Make fan translation easier to get into. (In terms of technical hindrance or visibility issues NOT translation ability.)
3. Through centralization, promote a culture of tolerance and open discussion. One that celebrates fan translation and is
fruitful for the recruitment of new fan translators as well as the cultivation of existing ones.
4. Through centralization, align the goals of fan translators everywhere so that we can all identify to a similar cause.
5. Turn Fuwanovel into the go-to-place for all things visual novel.
6. Start an Otome-ge fan translation scene.

>> No.8457393

Off topic, but I recently bought a condo to rent in Sapporo, just a cheap one near a university that I thought a university student could probably use and thus get a decent 23% yield from, which in turn translates to an easy $7000/pa investment, which translates to $4800 bottom line taking into account tax, insurance and other costs not exactly wondrous profits, but not bad either, it's a solid investment.

So it takes me a month to set up a jp holdings company etc, I place an ad in a property agency and I get my first potential tenant, he calls me via skype and he literally cannot fathom that he's renting from a foreigner, he thinks it's a joke at first, I assure him I'm the land owner and landlord, and after the painstakingly tedious interview he withdraws his interest, when I asked the estate agent why she hesitates then says that he didnt want to rent from a foreigner.

Oh Japan you so racist.

Would've hoped to possibly work in translation in the future, perhaps translating VNs in return for a percentage of sales ala Steam, but I doubt there'll be any kind of market left by the time I'm finished with my legal studies.

She could take a lesson from >>8459665.
Seriously, Japanese people have a very different (and very conservative) culture when it comes to this sort of thing. I mean, just look how long it's taken the anime scene to get as far as it has, and yet it's still in trouble.

Japanese companies view the rest of the world very differently from how she expects, and her very existence is dangerous for the future of VNs in the West.

However, I would strongly caution her to work with the localization community to insure that the fan translators (take Witch Hunt for example), who go out of their way to express a desire for people to purchase the games they are developing patches for, are endorsing their content being hosted on the website.

I also sincerely hope she doesn't plan on hosting JAST or MangaGamer titles.

Yeah, fair enough. But personally I'd be willing to deal with the fanbase getting shittier if it means we get more translated material. Hell, the anime fanbase is a decent enough example. It's been horrible for a while, but we can pretty much count on damn near everything getting translated, at least. It would be nice to see VNs get to that point.

Well, I doubt it'd go quite that far, considering how much more effort is involved in a VN translation, but the situation can certainly improve.

Agreed. Being able to read more obscure titles without taking years to learn a mostly useless language or going through the pains of reading machine-translated dialogue and then piecing it all together isn't necessarily a bad thing. The only realistic way the market will expand in the west to any significant degree is through official, well-publicized translations of non-ero games. Something labeled 'anime porn,' regardless of how unimportant a part of the VN as a whole the porn is, will never gain serious attention.

Erotic games in the west are so fucking stupid, terrible, and ultra-niche that being put in that slot means instant death. But if you have something like Steins;Gate with high production values, and an anime generation some buzz go up on Steam, I think it would sell surprisingly well and get a lot of people interested in the genre.

Best-case scenario is that this would trigger some real fucking publishers to start professional translation projects with well-paid editors, crushing the pathetic, parasitic small-timers who currently pick at the flesh of an amateur community.

Not necessarily. Spam as I understand it was originally an acronym for "stupid, pointless annoying message" (unless that's a backronym). It's only stupid, pointless and annoying to you.
> That's not abused and isn't a valid comparison.
Neither is "Who are you quoting?"
Did someone say something stupid that shows they need to lurk more before posting? You tell them to "Lurk more."
Did someone use greentext in an inappropriate way, i.e. for something other than quoting? You ask them "Who are you quoting?"
> Doesn't work. When shit is found in an otherwise clean room, you don't sprinkle more shit to make a point.
The alternative is we ignore it and treat it like a regular post. That won't discourage people. If we didn't practise elitism and actively discourage people from being stupid, /jp/ would be full of YouTube-style comments and jokes about arrows to the knee. That's what's popular, and that's where we're headed if we try to be "mature" by allowing stupid shit.
> Are you being ironic? Because you basically summed up "who are you quoting"
I've never seen anyone use it to bump old shit threads as this guy does. I'll grant you that some people use it to annoy people, sure. But it serves a good purpose. What this guy is doing isn't for the sake of preventing a stupid semantic change that threatens post quality, he's just trying to get on people's nerves because they're posting something he doesn't like (before you point out the "hypocrisy" in this last clause, read back a couple of sentences).

As per the first point it is definitely abused. "Lurk more" doesn't get posted nearly as often for starters.

Well all catchphrases can be copypasted. Doesn't mean they're stupid. "Take it easy!" for instance is quite nice.
> pointless (not discouraging use of greentext)
I really think it does. Look at some of the other boards. Imagine they practised the same elitism as we do with regards to greentext. I think it's pretty naive to think that people aren't swayed by it. Heck, even regulars who frequent other boards might find themselves about to use it, then choose not to just because of the response they'll get. And that's fine.
> annoying (same ugly picture cluttering up every other thread)
I think we're arguing different things here. That guy is anti-"Who are you quoting?" which is why he posts that picture in threads whenever someone says it. It's obviously the same person and he's doing it to discourage "Who are you quoting?" for some unknown reason. To be honest I think it's just to annoy people, hence doing it en masse and bumping old shit threads just to post it.

And to be honest I think that's a shame. Though it's mostly just because, on average, posts are good and made by regular /jp/ers. Of course I'm not counting shitposts, but they're intentionally made to be shit.
> Yet we DO often practice elitism and it doesn't really help shitty threads out, in fact how often have they just encouraged them?
That's only when we get into meta-bullshit like this. Meta is one of the most unfortunate developments of 4chan in the past five or six years. That aside, I would argue the opposite here. I have seen plenty of really nice people who came here to ask a question or made a really stupid thread, and people have said "Blah blah blah lurk more who are you quoting learn to use google" or whatever, and people have been like, "Oh thanks, I'll delete my thread." I'm not saying it's common, but the people making these posts ARE real people and they don't want to look like idiots even anonymously, particularly if they're trying to get something out of us. Not everyone on the internet is a jerk.
> Active moderation would do far more, and actually we've been getting some of that lately. It really feels good.
Agreed, though we can't just rely on moderation. In fact the past few days have been a wee bit annoying because of how trigger happy the janitor has been. It got to the point where he was literally going through each thread and cherry-picking the "good" responses and deleting the "bad" ones. That's not what moderation should be. I'd prefer an actual mod to our janitor. I really miss "You have been banned from /jp/ for the following reason: Shitposting". I don't know which mod it was that did that, but he had good judgment and was very efficient.

Mods are needed for that, plain and simple as they have no reason to listen to us.

Well it applies to meta, but also when we show an burnning hate for xyz, and it only signals "Spam lots of xyz to piss us off".

Most of my problem with /jp/ has just been the flood of shitposting anyway, he's at least been removing most of that.

A lot of the time, I suspect this is just from nuking all of some posts at once. It can suck sometimes, but it's also the easiest way to deal with these chronic shitposters who just start spamming garbage when they get bored.

Janitors can not nuke peoples post history. That is him going through the thread and saying "I disagree so I'm going to delete your post!". I'm going to make a big compilation showing how he's trying to turn /jp/ into his playground so he can get his ass fired. moot and the staff have proven time and time again 4chan isn't these random janitors property to whimsically censor and police posters they disagree with.

You can sort of tell with the content of the posts and by going through Foolz/Warosu. I don't think janitors have the mass post deleting ability that mods do, either. Though that always bugged me a lot. A few people were quite bipolar in their posting, and one mistake could mean good threads would disappear. I myself admittedly trolled or flamed a few times and got banned for it, then my more topical posts/threads died as a result and people were upset.

To be fair I think he's new. Like I know he's our new meido, but I think moot must have hired a new-new meido in the past few weeks or something. Or he's going through some sort of depressive phase, I don't know.
Give him a chance. Make posts like these (maybe on the ghost boards for good measure). He'll learn.

Yeah, I was erratic as fuck, but never got in trouble for my scripts. If anything I was praised for improving the deletion of automated patterned spam. It was the only good solution for the many raids and spam that we had before captcha.

Just deal with the fact that your garbage is not welcome in the board and whenever there is active moderation it will be deleted and banned. This place is not your playground, it's not for your own selfish enjoyment. It's for everyone to discuss the topics they like.

Maybe I'm a translator myself who does what I do in order to get VNs out to a wide audience. Maybe I'm fluent in Japanese but still hope, for reasons unconnected to person gain/e-penis, that people who aren't will be able to enjoy these games too. And, as I side benefit, maybe I just enjoy watching stuck-up babies writhe in anguish when someone else enjoys something they like.

I hate to be so literal, but I would argue that it's actually not a place for literally everyone to discuss the topics they like. Such a board would be a complete disaster and have no unifying theme.
I'd say this board should be mostly about a handful of core principals with moderation and janitorial actions aimed at keeping the board roughly focused on those ideals.

I made the argument around the time of the whole AoC drama that preserving core principals requires more tough policing of the boards, but many people disagreed stating that such strong-arm tactics would make 4chan no different than a closed forum. To this day, I still don't see their point.
