That vote count is about average for this whole contest, to be honest. The guy running it has a ton of automated stuff in place and also manually checks every single vote after each match, so it's actually pretty difficult to meaningfully cheat and get away with it.

Anyway, Kogasa for president, but now that Patchouli's out the results of this contest will at least be tolerable no matter who takes it home.

That picture is the final four, now down to three. Utsuho came up 5 vots short Kogasa two rounds ago in what was, by far, Kogasa's closest match (she won her initial bracket by 57 and has also beaten Yuuka by 31 and Mystia by 40).

If Utsuho had a luckier drawing she might still be in, but for now she'll have to settle for being the only one to stand toe-to-toe with what looks to be the eventual winner.

On the contrary, I think this contest is getting fucks from the right people on the whole, because nostalgia goggles haven't been all that powerful throughout the whole thing. Look at how quickly all of the Yakumos dropped out, for one thing. And then there's Remilia getting curbstomped by Nitori, Flounder getting the fight of her life from Nue, and Mystia of all people doing as well as she did. It could have been easy for this contest to descend into a pure popularity contest and see Reimu, Marisa, the entire casts of EoSD and PCB and maybe Sanae all run roughshod over everyone they come across, but there have been signs of life from multiple other unexpected sources, and now a UFO (of all games) character is in the finals with a legit change of winning.

Is that time of the year again?.

It IS a pure popularity contest (which it should be).

It always amazes me how people mistake the few percent of votes main characters get in the choose-one-out-of-a-hundred popularity polls for actually being liked by the majority (which is what this kind of poll tests out).

If you actually pay attention, the few universally loved Touhous are the likes of Youmu, Kogasa, Momiji, Okuu, etc. - all of which did really well (or lost to someone else who did really well). I'm surprised by Alice overall (she has quite a lot of negative attention - but maybe it's just 4chan's peculiarity, and it doesn't seem like people from here really cared to vote) and Mystia beating Momiji (it's not really off, I just... didn't know), but that's it.

I'm okay with Kogasa winning most of these matchups. I don't really agree with her beating Okuu because her moeness is something not of this universe, but still, good for her. I'm not even really that huge of a Kogasa fan but I do think she was hugely underrated before now.

I mean, apart from the fact that this kind of contest for entries everyone is already familiar with is "fail" by default and immediately converges to a straight popularity poll. Because with that qualification, I'd say it went extremely well. You're certainly not going to get anything better out of it.

I made bad design decisions. The Saimoe format just doesn't work in the west. Nobody wants to wait an hour to vote, and I was far to aggressive on anti-cheating measures. Nobody wanted to deal with my bullshit, that's why /jp and poosh both told me to fuck the hell off. The vote counts are so low that the outcome can't be trusted no matter how paranoid I am about cheating, so the entire contest is a waste of time.

I had actually thought that you had some very clever anti-cheating mechanisms. However, if a person has already got multiple IPs (botnet/whatever), what keeps them from writing scripts to wait one hour? What I mean is, you're adding inconvenience only for the legitimate voters and the non-serious spammers. Let's face it, unless you're either requesting ten-page essays on the vote, relying on obscurity or using some kind of personal identification such as fingerprints, you're not going to keep cheating from these polls. I really don't see a point in treating it like Serious Business.

How so? It's a perfectly good idea to limit the number of cheating attempts. If you actually care about weeding off multi-votes, you'd just be giving yourself much, much more work. (And if you don't, see the SaiGAR fiasco a few years ago to see where that ends you up. SaiAutisticFanbase proxies and router resetting fights are entertaining in their own way, but it may not be exactly what you and most potential participants want.)

Also, seriously, use real Touhous next time. Or Seihous, if you need to pad the bracket. There's way more than 128 of them already.
