Why do people stigmatize you for living at home with your parents, /jp/?

This was the social norm for the past 10,136 years of civilization, and is still prevalent in much of the world today. For example, take a look at most of the people in Southern Italy. They live with their parents until they become forty or so and their parents die.

>> No.8444976

It's a cultural thing. In a lot of countries it's the norm to live with your parents until you've saved up enough to buy your own place.

Living with your parents and NEET-ing is stigmatized most everywhere, though. Unless your family is really wealthy, or you're female, then you can get away with it a bit more.

That's what everyone in Southern Italy does, though.

As soon as a male turns 18, he's expected to have a driver's license and a fancy car, his own apartment, a full-time job, a wide circle of friends, a girlfriend or at least an active sex life, and be on the way to earning a bachelor degree at a private university.

And if he lacks any of these, he's a loser who fails completely at life.

Fucking America.

>> No.8445074

Because in america there was a massive push to fill out all our land. Something hard to do if everyone is bunched up in one spot. That's also why we had so many immigrants. Our culture was entirely based around taming and settling all our empty land.

Being white, my mom pretty much tried to force me out of the house as soon as possible. My Filipino friend is 26 and his parents would have a heart attack if he tried to move away.

The western world is slowly becoming less family centered.

only the retards with bad relationships with their patents say that. smart people save their money for post school education, a nice car and a future down payment on a house. that said, 95% of Americans are retards.

So is it okay to be 23 and still living at home? I kind of wish I can help out with the bills, but I don't want to work. I'm a very cost effective pet who eats 1 small meal a day so I'm not a huge burden I suppose. I can't get hungry when I don't do shit all day.

I'd like to help, but I can't. I have made a lot of doctors appoints to deal with my adhd/depression/dysthymia and seen psychiatrists and psychologists to no avail but haven't actually gotten around exploiting the government into giving me money to "help me get better". I'm not sure what to do.

My Muslim friend just got a full ride to MIT, but he turned it down because it would mean moving out of state where he couldn't live with his family.

Me on the other hand is constantly working history to entertain the notion of moving away. Why is America so difficult?
