Cheap "bread" is refined shit and has all the wheat germ and bran removed. Traditionally this caused malnourishment but the government made them add Folic acid and thiamine so poor people would stop dying from eating it.

White bread is 100 times worse than Coke. The old saying "the whiter the bread, the quicker you're dead" is very true.

Real bread is up to 5X as expensive as that wonderbread shit, but it doesn't cause you to become morbidly obese and battle with type II diabetes for the remainder of your days.

(also look out for cheap multigrain bread. This shit is just white bread with food coloring and a few other additives to make it "look healthier". False advertising with bread is rampant, and as long as it has enriched flour it is just as hazardous to your health)

Ohh good.. so the American food standards haven't spread there yet?

-Replace all sugar with low cost HFCS

-Replace all grain products with refined white flour with all nutrition removed and then bleach the fuck out of it.

Generally speaking, unless a product is a raw uncooked vegetable, there is pretty much a 100% chance that it has corn syrup in it.

Pic related, you can actually see the exact year where the corn lobby won and all processed food sold in America switched over to to less expensive HFCS. The corn lobby has been keeping the healthier cane/beat sugar sources out of the American market since 1977.

If you are in north America, "whole wheat bread" aka brown bread is just a marketing term. Most brands like wonderbread offer a brown "wholewheat bread" but it is not wholegrain. it is just white bread with additives. They do this for marketing reasons to pretend their product is healthier.

White bread: $1.50/loaf
"Whole Wheat bread": $1.50/loaf
Wholegrain bread: $4.50/loaf

here is a better one.

There were always overweight people who ate too much. The difference in 1977-1978 was that "normal" people were not eating any more, they were just eating the wrong things.

Obesity hit the lower class very hard in the late 70s and early 80s. Virtually all cheap food became processed food, and all processed food became corn syrup based. They used to be able to live off junkfood without becoming obese, but junkfood changed.

The body processes HFCS differently than other sugars. People were eating the same and exercising the same as they were in 1985 as they were in 1975, but they were mysteriously gaining weight uncontrollably. It wasn't videogames or cable televison that did this...

tl;dr

Don't eat processed food and excercise more to avoid these health hazards.

All you people drinking soda, be it diet or regular need to switch over to tea.

I drank 3 cans of diet dr pepper for years before I finally switched over to tea and it's great. It's nice to be drinking something hot instead of cold, and its way healthier for you.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=el02EHxRoZg&feature=player_embedded

I got one of these things for like 15 bucks. You probably want to go get some shitty tea in a bag. DONT. Loose-leaf tea is way cheaper and there are way more types. There are way more types and flavors of tea thn there are sodas and some teas taste fruity so if you were drinking citrussy sodas you can easily move over. This little teapot thing makes it so easy to make good loose-leaf tea. Don;t even waste your money on infusion balls. The great thing about the Ingenuitea is that its clean and allows you to use the same leaves for multiple cups of tea.

You are also probably addicted to the caffiene. Go on amazon and look for a pound of guyausa. It's like 15 bucks for a pound and a pound of tea is a fucking ton. Its this weird bush that grows in like south america and has a really mild taste and lots of caffeine, but unlike soda it has TONS of antioxidants. Then you can move onto drinking green tea and specialized black teas. Earl grey is my personal favorite. They even make green Earl Grey.

Adding milk to tea ruins the antioxidants, so try to wean yourself off of adding milk and just add honey. ONLY BREW YOUR TEA FOR LIKE 2 MINUTES or you will get a gross bitter cup of shit you will throw out.

You really don't have an excuse to keep drinking soda in this day and age.

The straight herb is sold out right now, but they still have the mixed stuff available. Theres a couple different flavors like peppermint and chai and something else.

I first tasted it when I ordered from Stash and they sent me some for free for being a loyal customer, but their prices are so damn expensive. Amazon is my favorite place to get tea now.

Also, search for Davidson's loose leaf on Amazon. You can get a pound for like 5-6 bucks cheaper than you can get it on their actual website.

I am drinking a cup of straight guayusa right now. I steeped it for like 8 minutes and it still isn't bitter. It makes a very dark green tea, almost colored black if you let it steep for so long. I don;t know about the versions of it with other flavors mixed in. The other stuff they add might make it bitter I don't know. I just bought the plain stuff so if I wanted I could mix it with my other teas.

Ideally, you can supplement your food with things you grow. A herb garden takes up little to no room, you can even have one in your apartment in windows or your balcony. A cheap way to make your cheap food taste better. You can also grow potatoes, peppers, and tomatoes like this, in little pots inside. You won't be able to live off of it alone, but it helps.

I live in the midwest, so fish are actually rather expensive and I never really got a taste for them, so I can't really say anything about that. Maybe you could try fishing yourself, cut out the middleman? On that note, hunting is a great way to supplement your diet with very cheap meat. You need a car for this though.

I forget what they're called, but there are places near hunting grounds that will cut up your meat, and make sure it's a legal kill. Sometimes people will sell their kill to these places and you can buy the butchered meat super cheap, without having to go out and kill anything yourself.

Gas utilities usually have a minimum fee, so even if you do use it once you'll get a $25 charge. Most cheap apartments are steam heated, which also means the pipes won't freeze. This means you can save yourself an extra fee, if you just have your gas turned off.

Electricity is another huge sink. If you've got nearly no perishable food, your giant empty refrigerator is costing you out the ass, especially if it's an ancient model that came free with your place. Unplug that thing and get a tiny CONDENSER (this is important, they cost more, but they actually function right) mini fridge. Most lights and fans cost maybe $0.25 to run a day, so those won't really kill you. Your computer will. Mine is about $30 a month on it's own. The answer to this is a netbook. Use your desktop computer only for intensive things and only for short whiles, and then leave it unplugged. Use a low power netbook for browsing /jp/ and stuff. TVs and stereos are the same, huge money sinks to have running more than occasional.

You're lucky you don't live in the US, OP. Our "tap" water is just sewage water with hormones and fluoride added. Our food is just about as safe and healthy. Anything that hasn't been injected with hormones and death is rarely on shelves and when it is, it's at 400% markup.

The government and corporations poison us, and then bitch at us for drying or being fat.

Number 1 tip for saving money on anything.

Never pay someone for something you can do yourself.

Anything you can do or make yourself will always be cheaper.

Its tastier too (Okay, not at first, but you'll get better).

My personal suggestion: learn to make roux right. You can do anything with it. Serve it on chicken. Add some cheese to it for some mac & cheese when you're watching the nephew. etc.
