Youkais are going to eat you as newcomer, especially since you will be lost in middle of forest and really big graveyard with youkais just waiting to attack you.

I guess I would locate some bushes and wrap my self in leaves, then look for some dry wood to start a fire with. I would build a massive fire and keep making it bigger until it got the attention of a any greater Youkai that was passing and ask them for aid.

Worst case scenario, I start a forest fire and Reimu comes to stomp some Youkai ass, only to find my naked ass and is forced to aid me. She would take me back to her shrine and we would have tea.

I believe that the person's latent abilities are converted into the danmaku system, which the Hakurei family created a while ago. From that, I assume that the stronger your abilities are, the more you can do danmaku. Furthermore, once you get to a certain level of power, you can concentrate your abilities by scribing it onto a spellcard. The stronger you are, the stronger your spellcard is.

Examples:

Actually, Patchouli is a normal human, surprisingly. Alice was a human, but then became a youkai. Most accepted theory of this change was that the power of her grimoire leaked into her, changing her into a youkai. This is further supported by the fact that the last time she was a human was the appearance in Mystic Square, where she opened the grimoire. In PCB, she was a youkai.

Patchouli and Alice are of this subspecies. Some are natural, like Patchy and some are human who have casted the spell that makes them not need to eat and drink.

More or less this-ish, Patchy is naturally a Magician, Alice isn't, though she became one between mystic square and pcb... though I believe thats a retcon compared to pc-98 canon.
Marisa on the other hand isn't a magician by species, think of it more as a class. (of course if she keeps it up she'll almost surely turn into a youkai one day herself)

Anyway it's stated in one of ZUN's books, I think, that Alice became a youkai and Patchy always was one.
