Well there's no canonical spelling because ZUN hates the West. I've seen it romanized "Toho" in some Japanese circles.

Now let's argue about how to pronounce it. In case we ever need to say it out loud to our many friends!

I tend se both and (try not to mix). Touhou and Gensoukyou goes better with the actual pronunciation while minding the kanji. とほ isn't the same as とうほう etc.

But when it comes to the way the words look, I prefer Toho and Gensokyo, but as I said, it messes things up with the kanji and the meanings. That'd make Yukarin and Yukarin the same person, for example.

More importantly, why do we "fix" ZUNs romaji but only sometimes? We say Fujiwara and Tojiko, but we also use "Nazrin".

It's pronounced toe-hoe, but I like saying too-hoo better.

Because ZUN is the person who uses English to "CONGRATULATION !!" us at the end of games, and tell us that girls "do their best now and are preparing." I don't trust that man with my Latin alphabet.

Words like color are a completely different matter.

I use Touhou / Gensokyo because I like the ou for おう, but the conventions that have emerged for referring to cities is to just have single o's: Tokyo, Kyoto, Osaka, and so Gensokyo.

It isn't just cities.

Americans truncate almost all Japanese words with double vowels. "Somen" noodles, "Tokio" and many other cities as you've mentioned, names such as "Fuko" and "Ichiro." The list goes on and on. It really is a mystery why Touhou was so fortunate, but it's probably a combination of the facts that the extended pronounciation is clear enough to Americans because the word is brief/simple and only otaku-types care about it.

It's like Yuugi vs. Yugi or Yuuka vs. Yuka
