Damnit I knew I should have included the longer pasta

The predominant ones posted here are Volks Dollfie dream: http://www.volks.co.jp/en/dollfiedream/concept.html They're about 56-60 cm tall and cost an arm and a leg. They're often based on licensed characters http://www.volks.co.jp/en/dollfiedream/list_ddl.html but as you can see Volks also released characters of their own design http://www.volks.co.jp/en/dollfiedream/list_dd.html you may see these referred to as 1/3 dolls

Volks also makes other doll product lines such as "Super Dollfie" but they're geared toward more traditional doll enthusiasts and cost even more. http://www.volks.co.jp/en/superdollfie/sd/index_sd.aspx

The 'second' large doll manufacturer that cater to our tastes in the form of original and licensed character dolls is Azone. http://www.azone-int.jp/ they're about 21-25 cm tall (also referred to as 1/6 scale dolls) but Azone also makes larger dolls similar to volks using Obitsu bodies.

Beyond that, it's all a custom racket. Obitsu is the main manufacturer of doll bodies but unless you need a new doll body or new parts you usually don't look them up. hopefully that will get you started.

At DD Gathering 2010, Volks sold a pre-painted DD-H04. She is my first DD girl, Kanade-chan (in the picture). I was super lucky to get her. It wasn't a lottery, just a regular item sale from VolksUSA.

http://www.volksusa.com/ddg2010ddh04.html

And I just got news that I won the lottery for DD-H06-san. I expect her sometime in March. I saw several DD-H06 in Volks showrooms while traveling around Japan a few months ago. She's very cute.

This seems interesting and I wanted to ask a few question.
-Is there a significant difference in quality between dollfie and azone to justify the extra 30,000+ or is it more just the size difference that increases the cost? Perhaps a different material that feels different or something that may not be apparent from photos?
-How do you deal with the social consequences of being an adult male who is willing to spend $500 on a doll? Have you ever had success trying to explain it to a more typical person? Not that I ever have any social contact outside of work at the moment, but I don't want to be alone forever (would like to raise a child eventually). I don't like the idea of starting yet another hobby I will have to hide whenever I get motivated and force myself to socialize.

Dollfie is a line from Volks. Azone is a different line altogether. As far as I know, Azone makes anime-based dolls with doll parts from other companies, like Obitsu. Obitsu is also a vinyl doll maker, but their products are more realistic and... uglier, but personal opinion.

The price difference you're seeing is between the 25ishcm dolls and the 60cm dolls. All three companies make both.

Azone dolls are going to be cute either way, more or less. They sell many sizes, like

http://www.hlj.com/product/AZNOD502LST
compared to
http://www.hlj.com/product/AZNPND049MDK

They're often anime characters and come with clothes and already styled. Hair is rooted (not a wig) which could be good or bad- no wigs to mess with but also less styling options as well as if it gets fucked up you can't replace it easily.

The difference between these two dolls are consistent across companies though-- the 1/6 dolls, the cheaper ones, are only about 11" tall. They are literally the size of a barbie. The 50/60cm are... big. like 24" tall. They're more customizatable and... just have a bigger presence. They are certainly more expensive material-wise.

I don't have a lot of experience in these, so I'll talk about the ones I do:

>> No.8297559

>>8297555

Volks:
There are several lines offered by Volks under the label "Dollfie" --EB Plus, Dollfie plus, there are a lot of them, but generally they're all about 11" tall. These are just... barbie sized and closer to the quality of a barbie. Their joints are, depending on the line, more noticeable and less attractive.
They're a lot cheaper, too. Some are anime-styled, some aren't.

like http://www.flickr.com/photos/msgeek/3216246720/

Dollfie Dream are what you see here more. They range from $350ish to build your own, to a fuckton for a limited. Limiteds are MUCH more expensive, especially on the aftermarket. Part of this is for liscensing, because volks pays people to use their characters, and the other part is because Volks hates its buyers and want you to pay. Most in these threads are usually Dollfie Dream.

I just generally think obitsu are cheaper and uglier, no matter what size. But that's just me.

eBay. Lottos or resorting to deputies can be enough to make any new potential doll owner change their mind. Unless you're overpricing them like a scalper you're guaranteed to offload them should the time come to join the normals.

Although on further thought, another idea with hard shadows is to position your flash above her to give her a hoodie shadow similar to the way bangs of hair work.

About these lighting: just good old fashion sun light my friend. Although that will be in scarce supply in this season especially for me in the great white north

Where do people get so many customized dollfies?

I'd love to order one, and I do have the money for one, but as far as I know, all I can get that is new is Aoi and Yukino-- the only thing about these two is that they don't have much to offer. Aoi has a nice face but the body and hair are lacking in my opinion, Yukino has a nicer body but her face really holds no emotion.

Would love advice on customizing/switching out cause my plan is to buy either Aoi or Yukino and really customize them to my liking.

Volks offers character dolls at every Dollpa. It's like once a fucking month anymore.

Either way you can choose from 5 optional heads, whether or not they are in stock is anyone's guess. They just need to be painted.

The thing with Aoi and Yukino is they have the same body, just one has a Medium bust (yukino) and one has a large (aoi) -- Aoi is a DD02 and Yukino is an DD03. You can get any of the 5 heads and paint yourself or have someone else do it.

With eyes and wig, really, you just switch them. Buy Aoi a new wig and she's got a different hairstyle. Yukino has new eyes and she has a different emotion

If you intend to paint Yukino, I would just get the body, head, and eyes seperate. The image character, you're paying for the wig, eyes, and face painting that you'll have to wipe. There are lots of places that sell wigs, but personally I like Volks anime eyes best. Obitsu sells some eyes, but not many.

in parts, it should only cost about $350ish

http://www.volksusa.com/dollfie-dream-dollfie-dream.html

There's also a Dynamite body, if that's what you're into, I hear its posing is a bit worse though

http://www.volksusa.com/dollfie-dream-dollfie-dream-dynamite.html

If you buy eyes, head and body separate you don't get the little slip. But you save money and can put it towards a real outfit.

If you have an idea of what hair you want I can point you in a direction. Volks wigs are nice but expensive with limited colors.

Yup, some dark months ahead. I'm in Michigan so it sounds like we're practically neighbors.

I'm not the other poster but I don't think they're referring to life sized ones.
On the second-hand market, some of the older, highly desirable ones like Tamaki Kousaka and Sasara fetch some extremely high prices I've seen them start at over 200,000 yen and more / which is roughly $2600 to start

That adds a heavy human component to each doll's price. Boild down, prices all comes down to "How much am I willing to pay for it?".

Doll maintenance increase dramatically if you take them outside. Clothes and hair must be maintained (yes they can be washed just like their human counterparts). Keep in mind that vinyl slowly change color in direct sun light.
Of course, these are for people who either dont give a fuck about attracting attention or mitigate by carefully selecting venues and times.

>> No.8302628

>>8302593

Vinyl, unlike the resin of most BJDs, doesn't yellow NEARLY as fast. It could be decades before you have a notable difference dude. It's the ABS plastic of the internal frame and where it is visible (like elbows/wrist) that you should worry about when it comes to yellowing

on the contrary, decades could be an exaggeration. Color shift happens faster than that. Kotori came to me in her santa outfit complete with a heavily stained torso which I promptly replaced. As you can see to the left there's a notable tonal difference between her face, torso and shoulder.

>> No.8302704

>>8302683

Color shift is different than yellowing. Color drifts from a substance and stains an item from leftover dye.

If you purchased new pieces and that's what you mean, well two things could be happening--one, sealant that colors the face yellows through UV light. I see she still has a default faceup. Often, it isn't UV resistant.

OR it could merely be that the torso you bought wasn't made in the same color exactly-- like dye lots on fabric, while all red fabric from a company is sold as the same color, it's all dyed separately, so some variation can occur

However, if you have just a naked doll, you likely won't notice variation in color from age for a very, very long time

If there's one thing I always wanted to do with my dolls, it's to make a "small doll living in a big world" themed series of photos. Taitan (of http://www.taitan-no.net/ ) might have something like that already done if I recall (I miss his cat).
The biggest challenge I've run into so far is the ability for these dolls to hold anything of any significant mass. I might just make a pulley prop for practical reasons and the HHHNNNGGG

>> No.8302760

>>8302704
perhaps color shift was the wrong term. The point I was making was that while they won't yellow, they're still vulnerable to other elements that can affect the overall skin color, which may not be noticeable until a fresh piece of vinyl comes along and forces a comparison.

I just bought my first custom piece. 99,000 yen + deputy fees/shipping/customs for a custom head with wig/eyes/clothes. Add the price of a body to that and you get the rough idea of what a custom can go for.

>>8302439
Realistic estimate:

Pick one
1) Limited Edition Image Character DD (licensed characters from anime and eroge) - $700 - $3000 (price range of direct from Volks to Aftermarket prices)

2) Custom made - about $400 (some work needed, such as face-up making)

Add:
- Clothing - price varies greatly, and you will probably get more than one set. Estimate around $100 per full set of clothing.

- Accessories and other tools such as doll stand

- Camera gear - not really directly related but if you admire dolls you would probably eventually fall into photography too.

As you can see you can go from as budget as around $500 to a bottomless pit of cash drain. Clothing for example can be periodical and you'll just buy more. Don't forget the fact that you'll probably get lured into buying more in the future.

My advice is to stay away from this hobby unless you are very serious and committed, otherwise you will end up selling like some people who jumped too fast into it.
