Kigurumi (着ぐるみ) is a kind of costuming where the player wears a full body skin suit (called a zentai or hadatai) along with an anime mask.

The Japanese word "kigurumi" refers to any kind of full-body costume, but in this thread we're specifically looking for anime masks combined with skin-toned bodysuits - properly known as "animegao" kigurumi.

Cute pics, but definitely practice often. "Don't know what to do" is something you should try to not let happen. Obviously it will happen at first, but kigs who are more successful at getting photographed or filmed have an internal mental collection of poses and such at their disposal. Maybe try to watch live shows (professional and non) to get an idea of the variety. This is all sort of general advice though, since you're not doing anything wrong so far as I can see.

Male character do exist (Len Kagamine, Edward Elric, Sanji, Black Butler, etc) but they're much rarer.

I think the core reason for this is that it's socially acceptable for females to cross-play, and very much unacceptable for males to (unless it's comedic.) Masked cosplay offers an alternative for those who don't have the androgyny to pull off a deceiving female cosplay normally. Because of this, females don't see a reason to do kigurumi unless they're drawn to the style itself, and males will choose to play female characters because this method allows them to do so. There are a few males who play males, but that's in the same vein as the girls, they're doing it because they like the method, not as much the opportunities it presents.

In Short: "Kigurumi looks cool" and "Kigurumi presents opportunity to crossplay safely and anonymously" are two draws to the hobby. The folks who weigh the second appeal more heavily are more common, and are also more likely to be male because of social reasons.

That and there's also the third category of "Fetish reasons" which can be split into subcategories itself, (encasement fetish, mask fetish, etc) but for discussion purposes I'll focus on the "crossdress" fetish. Males who fetishize the idea of becoming a girl may latch onto this hobby. Girls are much less likely to fetishize the idea of female-to-male transformations, and much less likely to carry those sorts of fetishes in general. (it's just biology, I think) This means that even on the fetish side, you're going to see less male characters.

All these factors and probably more lessen the frequency of male characters outside of professional stage shows.

Initially developed an interest because it would allow me to cosplay original characters but still be anime. In a way, kig is more true to the original form than traditional cosplay.
