Fast for a fansub translator is within 12 or so hours of the show airing and also requires timing, typesetting, and other things as well as not having the words in front of them and not including things like "..." as lines.

>> No.8254037

>>8254020
Sort of. I'm saying that if given the same number of lines from an anime and from a VN, it is more difficult/time consuming to sub the anime's lines.
That said, the entire script of a 13 episode anime will probably be only about 2,000 lines, so yes, it is FAR shorter, but those lines will not be explicitly given, will not include empty lines like "...!", and will need further work done on them before they can be used.

I did misremember from when I did my count though. Geass clocked in at around 400 lines/episode which I estimated as about 200 line-equivilents to a VN. Not really sure if that supports or hinders my argument though, so whatever.

It's overly flowery and less concise compared to the original japanese. I give him credit for being not purely literal, but just slapping on extra adjectives isn't the way to approach this sort of thing.

Example: Literally, the second line reads something like "Perhaps according to the creator's plan, there was no electric lighting whatsoever in the entrance hall."
That becomes:
"Doubtless, the architect thought the lighting scheme of the entrance hall a particularly brilliant stroke: There was none of the warmth of electric light here."

>> No.8254828

>>8254764
The last sentence in Japanese, more stiffly translated is:

明かりになるのは、その高い天井にある窓から差しこむ日差しと月光だけだ

The only sources of illumination would be rays of sunlight and moonlight pouring from the window on that tall ceiling.

You can draw your own conclusions from his translation, but I like what I see.

Lazy literal translation:

Same as the outside atmosphere, the lobby was also dimmed grey.
Perhaps by the architect's intent, this entrance had no sort of electric lighting.

The translation project was at a halt because no one fixed the engine problem. Text insertion is just a matter of changing the striong table at the end of each scripts. Even Cudder's PoC (which he claimed did not crash) crashed in the same way the translation did. It's very easy to get the engine to overflow its buffers.

What? Do you have instructions on how to reproduce it? Is this a configuration-specific issue? (E.g. a required font was not found?)

I went through what I think was an entire route (started at the beginning, went through a lot of text, choices, sex, and eventually ended up at the title screen again) in the PoC and did not experience any crashes.

There is still 16.75 hours I can put into this.

Also, I found the translator and he says he's translating and the Nagato guy from TLwiki is working on the tools, but if text insertion is as easy as you say then it may not be a problem with tooling.

The main buffer issue has already been fixed. If you want to see it for yourself, though, just use the backlog often and you will run into it eventually. The backlog concats all of the strings on a page into one which causes it to overflow since it can only hold 302 characters before it starts to overwrite other data, and about 308 characters before it'll overwrite an important address and then completely crash.

Here Mr Munroe is suggesting that programmers are so dedicated to their work (almost autistic, if you will) that they undergo coitus in order to have a child for the sake of fixing a software bug. In the last panel Munroe employs a pun: software testers often report that they cannot "reproduce" a bug under given conditions, and here it had the additional meaning of "procreate." Of particular interest is the second panel, notably the dialog: "Hey, can you do me without a condom?" This is how women really talk, and Munroe knows this because he is a sexually active young man.

Well, from a business standpoint it's a brilliant strategy. Even if they compensate the translators, it comes out to a fraction of what it costs to translate it themselves, and they get to release it almost immediately. Agreed that it accomplishes next to nothing for the English VN community, though, besides possibly helping to keep the company afloat with the assumption that they might release more stuff (that wasn't just shamelessly hijacked from a fan-translator) later.

>> No.8267203

>release it almost immediately

If they actually did this, I wouldn't care so much.

>> No.8267217

>>8267203
Well, by that I meant prepare for release almost immediately, as opposed to having to wait for the thing to actually be translated. But yeah, their process could definitely do with some more efficiency on this end, but then there are a lot of things outside their control on that end as well, as far as uncooperative-as-shit Japanese companies.

Not even trying to be JAST-defense-force or whatever either, I've pirated every single one of their games that I've played. Just, I can understand why from their point of view it makes sense to do what they do, even if it dicks over the rest of the community.

>> No.8267225

>>8267189
The only way I think they'd help the community stay afloat that way would be having translators start projects with the hope of getting money out of them from the start. But then again, those translations would most probably be worse than average, free fan translation, and very likely to be dropped.
